Their games are always the most creative, the most original, with the best music, great character design, challenging but not unfair. Even their McDonald’s licensed game was in the top 10 platformers for me.

Gunstar’s soundtrack is the best OST of any game I’ve heard:

Gunstar Heroes has top tier gameplay and is the best run and gun ever made, but I would never say anything else about it, let alone its music, was good. It has a couple tracks that are better than average. And character designs? Are you shitting me? Everything is ugly as sin.

Play the game, enjoy its strong suits, don't make up bullshit about everything else about it that wasn't strong just because the end result was still good.

Literally every game Treasure made was a complete break from trends at the time with the exception of their licensed games which were for cash.

If you actually played any of their games, especially Silhouette Mirage, Ikaruga, Mischief Makers, Stretch Panic, you would know how ridiculous of a statement this is.

If Treasure is somehow generic literally the entire industry is creatively bankrupt by comparison. No game company was able to make mainstream games with as much creative freedom and originality.

gimmicks in games are usually odd one-off exercises with the games mechanics or abandoning those mechanics for something unique. Whether it's worth it or not varies. Cotton Boomerang's backwards scrolling section in Ayakashi Swamp is a test in your command and directional inputs and is a very tense section because if you planned your roster well you can bounce ice shots off of surfaces to protect yourself or if you were very smart use a wind character for homing shots. it's also a gimmick section, the game never scrolls backwards otherwise except there - but you do have the tools to succeed.

Treasure's gimmicks include things like Mischief Makers dash race or returning enemies into matching homes using the grab. it's odd, out of place and by the time they occur in the game don't really challenge or teach you anything useful. They almost seem like something thrown together without much thought and I personally find these gimmicks drag the experience down. I'd rather have any other kind of challenge because they just aren't fun.

1. A mystique developed around Radiant Silvergun because you could only buy it from import shops and it was always the most expensive game despite just being a single disc with no peripherals (never going under $79.99 even during 1998).

2. Ikaruga's innovative gameplay and lack of anime characters got a lot of favorable coverage.

3. Many went back and played Gunstar Heroes, Dynamite Headdy, Guardian Heroes after the fact.

4. Consistently great music.

Me personally, I was lucky to have a single copy of YukeTora/Mischief Makers at my local Blockbuster when I was in the single digits of age and the game forever stood with me.

Treasure's games are filled with callbacks to their other games.

The precious gold crystals Marina needs to collect in order to unlock the perfect ending where she becomes a human being are exactly the same design as the Stone-Like from Radiant Silvergun which is endlessly used to eradicate all of humanity in that game.

They were a great dev who did great stuff, I'm just kind of accepting of their death and happy to let their games exist in memory of 16 bit era 'pure gameplay' experiences. Have played their games to death over the years and they feel like Sonic 3&K did to me as a kid - hype as fuck back then but I've played them inside out and back to front nowadays. Not much new to say.

That said, that Treasure Land Adventure secret finding recently was fucking mindblowing and I'm sure some of their titles have weird shit like that still to discover. Also would fucking love if a beta of Gunstar Super Heroes got out there when it was going to be a huge Sega crossover, including many of its franchises as references/bosses. Seriously, there's music and sprites left over in current roms, like the ESWAT guy and numerous Altered Beast forms. It was going to be actually interesting. Some of it remains, like the Thunder Blade-ish level and the Flicky level, but there was far more planned.

Recently tried playing through Silhouette Mirage and a couple hours into it. Jesus, the audio is really grating. Insufferable low quality voice clips “REFUREKUTA, REFUREKUTA, REFUREKUTA“, “BAM, BAM, BAM, BAM, BAM”. The gameplay gimmick is interesting but feels kind of odd when enemies seem to take so many hits to die. In addition, I was able to cheese multiple bosses (without even trying to) as a result of them becoming stuck in place a result of bad pathfinding or animation loops.

I also don’t like the art design and the OST is the weakest of the treasure games. But it’s a neat weird thing and I’m glad it exists because it gave us Ikaruga eventually.

Artistically timeless with epic music that’s endlessly a joy to listen to. Polarity based Run n' Gun is definitely a unique take on the genre and one we haven't really seen since especially Silhouette Mirage's execution of it. >The 2011 game Outland.
It's close but even then not really, it's more of a combat focused action-platformer like the post SOTN Castlevanias and it has more Ikaruga polarity switching that's mapped to a button than SM's position based switching that's linked to which direction you're facing. It overall seems like a more Ikaruga inspired experience than an SM one, especially those bullet hell-esque challenge rooms.
Which of course if a game is gonna mimick a polarity system Ikaruga is usually the go to and it's a no brainer most people would agree it did the mechanic the best compared to SM or even something like Dimahoo. But the unique way SM did it I feel has a lot more potential to be pushed and squeeze out more fun experimentation and creativity.

I hate to use the word “contrived” in reference to games that are bold about being mechanically different, but I can’t think of any other word I would use to describe SM. Again, I love that it exists and I wouldn’t want a world without it. I love the weird statement of me simply saying that my healthbar changes based on which direction I’m facing. But in practice, SM’s system encourages you to hug bosses in their deadzone horizontally in a manner so it’s easy to change directions to respond to incoming projectiles of differing colors. And yes, that’s really different, and I like different, but God that in no way resembles anything natural or resembling anything real (which it doesn’t have to). But the hugging of boss deadzones on that singular pixel that differentiates if you’re to the left or the right of them creates a type of play I can’t help but describe as anything other than contrived and unnatural. But that doesn’t mean it’s necessarily bad.

If my explanation doesn’t make that much sense, I’ll make a short video explaining it because it’s understandably difficult to communicate without a visual aid.

I understand what you're saying, though you can still make a video for others or if you want to communicate better. I never really had a problem with that system cause it was very much still a high risk situation. You could just as easily stand from a safe distance and pea shooter your way to victory but it would be a lot slower and more meandering. Getting in close if you weren't careful you were going to take a good chunk of damage or lose more spirit than you were bargaining for, but you would more effectively do damage to bosses or even get the chance to stun lock them. Plus you were usually very close to most of the bosses anyway if you wanted to farm them for their coins effectively. It still felt like your reactions were being tested and I think there's a lot of fun to be found in straight up locking bosses out of their attacks by draining their spirit and rendering them helpless.
I think it's a fun system to learn the ins and outs of though the patterns of the later bosses especially in the final stage, are where the problems with the system rear their head more. Megido can be a slog depending on his RNG but then you have the final level bosses slew of annoyances Cyber Zohar's crazy difficulty spike, Sera's millions of really long attacks that railroad you and the most effective way to deal with Clod is to just stand in a certain spot and cheese him.
>>8084795
Naw best way to play is the Japanese PS1 version. That way you get the most content, memory saves and no WD balance bullshit. That being said you should still try the US version if you like the game just to compare the differences between the two. It's worse but it's definitely playable, I do think there are genuinely some changes made that weren't worthless and Shyna's English voice wasn't as grating as her Japanese. to me at least. Plus some of her sassy dialogue translates well to English.

I noticed textures seemed pretty clear which I wasn't sure was due to emulation or the game itself.

Not the guy you’re replying to, but the way 3D games on the N64 look generally bother me. Blurry textures, ton of fog. And again, S&P is such a grey/brown game. But I’m tempted to give it another shot because I love treasure.

If it’s possible to rig my mouse as the wiimote in Dolphin for Star Successor that would have a huge influence on me wanting to play it…

I don't really understand how S&P is a "grey/brown game". Grey/brown makes me think of the ugly ass unreal 3 games you'd got on the 360/ps3. Sin and Punishment incorporates a lot of blue and orange in its palette.
The draw distances in S&P seem pretty good for an n64 game, significantly better than most on the console.
Textures also seemed pretty clean as well. You could make out all the pixels on the face textures for example.

Bangai-O is still their magnum opus (Dreamcast remake of course, not the inferiour N64 beta).

Uploading. It's long and kind of unfocused since my thoughts kept changing during prep for the video.

Eh. Reviewing the video I made. I'm not happy with the result. I might re-record it. My thoughts change as I explain things and I don't feel like what I recorded reflects how I feel now.

Hey man no worries take your time. Privilege of a slow board like /vr/ is that we're really not at that much of threat of getting archived unless we just forget to bump.

Yes. It's another one of those soulless and inferior Treasure sequels like Gunstar Superheroes and Guardian Heroes Advanced.

Here you go. It ended up being really long but that's just how it turned out. I gave a bit of an overview of the game to people who might not know about the game which made it longer, but I didn't want to exclude it. So feel free to skip over that. No worries if it's too long but I've re-recorded this video a handful of times and just didn't know how else to put this together. Hopefully something about this is interesting in some way.

Glad you were finally able to make the video. I enjoyed watching it from start to finish considering not many people talk about this game especially not as in-depth or to this length. After watching it seems you had the same experience I did when I first played the game back in 2019, I was a bit put off by how poorly it explained it self in the tutorial as well as WD's butchering that it made my attempts trying to force myself to like it aggravating. But after playing the Saturn and Japanese PS1 version I feel in love with it and its unique polarity system and I'm glad you were also able to turn around on it playing it more.
I know in an interview the director stated one of his biggest regrets about the game was how confusing the tutorial/attribute system but I do like how much flexibility the system does actually have. You really can play the game in a lot of different ways, I remember my first few playthroughs I kind of corralled all the enemies together rendered them helpless and CashBashed them to my hearts content. It really is a neat little game that does a lot with its core idea and system but I still think it has more room to grow to become even more interesting. I'm also surprised they didn't do a shmup level though I guess it can be argued that maybe it just evolved into Ikaruga. Here's the interview if you're interested and an extra one just cause: http://shmuplations.com/silhouettemirage/

I think a sequel that had some QoL changes and tweaks, added more weapons or at least more differences between each parasite level, gave Shyna more movement options and abilities, more enemy variety and placing Shyna in more bigger maps or rooms that could promote exploration maybe without going full metroidvania could help push the attribute system even more.

Really awesome to hear you got something out of the video. It's rare coming across games where it feels like every bit of content was designed with the developers being completely aware of the implications of the system they've made.

There are not many other developers outside of Treasure who show this level of consideration in their designs. Especially when you consider there is little to no repetition among the boss/encounter designs.
