I fucking loved both games, my one grief with them is the fucking Castle Center level, and I'm not even talking about carrying the magic nitro especifically. The entire fucking thing is a slog and I was livid when LoD still forced me to play it. Also they fucked up my favorite level in LoD Duel Tower

>> No.8078201

My biggest issue with the game was how it felt like it couldn't really decide what kind of game it wanted to be. You had a very pure character-centric adventure level in the Villa, an exploration-heavy Zelda-esque level in Castle Center, but also all these long action game sequences in between, culminating in the entire game just turning into a long corridor up to the final boss once you beat Castle Center, the MIDDLE stage of the game. The entire game felt so schizophrenic.

Also Carrie felt like a complete afterthought, despite her unique levels being more fun than Reinhart's.

a lot of games from that era should've stuck with 2.5D. DK 64 would've been way better that way, a Metroid done in that style could've worked, and of course Castlevania

>> No.8078245

>>8078224
I'd say they were decent if not outright good translations of Castlevania to 3D, and certainly better than plenty of other rough transitions out there. The original might've came out two years too late but for me it's still a great footnote for the series.

The N64vanias are more or less 3D classicvanias, so there would be a lot of platforming and fighting enemies, the other elements either strewn about in between and giving some direction or taking center stage in the ways how you mentioned. Basically, an action platformer with some I guess would call adventure elements. Personally, I like the variety, though when I think on it, I can't help but think that a lot of it was flipping switches and finding keys. Granted, given what gen it was, I'm not surprised or even all that disappointed, but still.
>>8078142
I don't agree on the camera, but I do pretty much agree on everything else. LoD was the first CV I played and it made a real good impression with its solid if not great combination of gameplay with an actually decent story and setting. Funnily enough, I actually prefer the original for its enemy and level designs. The vampires actually feel differentiated, the levels were minimalistic but got their point across very well, and I honestly just prefer the older werebeast AI designs. I get what LoD was going for with its take on the werewolf miniboss, but I honestly just would rather have the kung fu version who fucking glides across the ground to slash your face off no matter how fucking silly that shit is. Still nice having both versions, though.

I’ve posted this before, but the proper way to play these games is to play 64 first and then play LoD only with Cornell and Henry. Playing LoD with the original 64 characters is pointless because Cornell runs through both of their paths anyway and if you play him after 64 you will have seen all the content in the game while also experiencing the content which was exclusive to the original.

Maybe not great, and there was this one time where I couldn't get the camera centered behind me in the forest because these asshole skeletons wouldn't stop spawning some ways behind me, bu that's the only time it was ever an issue. Mario 64's camera is indeed worse...when you're not positioning it right. The main attacks only suck if you haven't been grabbing a couple of powerups and/or died and lost them and/or quit the game and came back. As for having a shitton of ammo, that's actually how the older games where as well, and on that note, it's generally good to not be stingy with them since yeah, they tend towards being very helpful and you're likely to get those hearts/crystals back.

Seriously? A fully upgraded Carrie shits all over everything (apparently she's slightly nerfed in LoD which I couldn't tell, but I did notice that her charged attack penetrates through the cerberuses multiple times and way longer than in the original game), especially due to her insane range. Also she's so much faster when jumping that she trivializes the maze chase completely.

I guess I just don't play Carrie in the original enough. I'm remembering what it was like playing as each character in LoD hard mode and she was the only one where the game gave me trouble, starting with the sea serpent, even. She has range, sure, but unless I'm remembering wrong, she could only have one fireball out at a time, right? That sucks for me, especially since I'm used to Reinhardt as you might guess. Dude's a fucking beast in LoD especially because of how fast he attacks and how hard he hits while doing it.

But then, it's been awhile since I played either game, so eh.

Would unironically support that. Their N64 ports are better than most of their other shit and improved camera/controls would make it more approachable.
That said, I really doubt that it's even remotely in the realm of possibility.

Konami probably doesn't even remember these games as existing. You'd be shocked at how lazy complacent copanies can be swayed into allowing a new port just because a company requests to do it. From their standpoint it's free money with no work. I believe the MM Legacy ports were entirely because a company requested to do it. It's often why these ports are cheap/lazy cash grabs by people lacking passion.

I don't know anything about NightDive Studios, so I don't know how it would turn out, but a port of the N64vanias would be interesting, I guess. Don't really know how to feel about it, honestly, because as much as I love them, I can't imagine people nowadays liking them as is.

Nightdive are publishers who have a dev team using the KEX engine to rebuild old games with missing source code into new ports. They are remakes using the same assets. They've done Doom 64, Turok 1/2, Shadowman, and a few others. Shadowman was another 3D adventure-platformer and it plays pretty similar to Castlevania 64.

This game is fucking great. I've never met anyone who actually played it that disliked it unless they heard a bunch of people on the internet with bad opinions.

For Konami that might be it (though it's surprising how good Grimoire of Souls was, to the point where the team was allowed to retool it).
MM Legacy ports were 100% an initiative from Capcom though and every collection past the first one was developed at least partially by Capcom.
