Fixing the secrets could potentially lead to desyncs in demos for very little gain. It's much easier to just have the highest possible percentage be the requirement instead of a literal 100%. Theres also the matter of releasing barely modified versions of iwad levels, which some people look down upon (TNT31.wad is an exception, because it was released by TeamTNT themselves, and it fixes a major progression blocking bug)
>>no way to grab the second computer map in the level mentioned above
Max run categories typically ignore the items percentage, so I don't think many people even care.

Recently launched Doom 3 on my phone and it was such a revelation for me. Seeing the game I could barely run on PC on lowest settings in 2004, running in full HD on a fucking phone. I know it's thanks to dhewm3's multicore rendering, but anyway. Time sure flies.
As for discussion, most of mapping/modding unfortunately died after Doom3World shutdown. Notable new releases are really far inbetween now. There's Phobos Ep3 coming, plus I saw some dudes sharing nice screenshots of their maps on Doomworld recently. That's pretty much it.

What would be really cool is if the source port developers could at least put their heads together and work something out that makes your input feel consistent across every port. Then I wouldn't mind just switching ports depending which one the map plays best in.

I have no idea what the difference is, but I have been using ZDoom for years, since before I even knew what different map formats or anything like that was, and I'm just too used to the way it feels. When I try use other ports something feels off.

>implement normal / specular mapping for your sprites & overlays
>development laptop dies two weeks later

It's been over two years but re implemented it into my current project, as optional feature of course. Will look nice on actors, especially with dynamic lighting playing on surfaces with different depth / specular values. Also dynamic projection shadows. I haven't solved the issue of shadows from 'sprites' becoming increasingly thin as the angle between the polygon and light source gets very shallow. Maybe stacking the same shadow buffer several times with offsets so create a shadow with actual three-dimensionality? Seems like a performance killer.

From lore texts. I don't remember him being mentioned in comic, but both of them are some kino material:
>I do not know where to start. He was mostly calm but delusional for session 2. “You know how many levels are underground?,” he asked. “Me neither.” He described winding metal hallways, some without light, some flooded in green water, leading down into the mountain. “I saw them. I saw the schematics,” he said. I asked him to explain. “We are the Dark Young,” he said. “It’s us.” He said marines were being fitted with ‘bad blood, bad bionics.’ Then he opened his shirt to show his sternum. I … need to leave this place. I’m leaving now.

Thanks. This is from the old project. I will post some newer vids once I have some actual assets to show.
Sprite creation is a bit of a hassle because you have to (ideally) export an additional normal pass for each frame (or draw a corresponding height map and covert that if you have too much time).
Same applies for other passes like specularity. I'm using Blinn–Phong here for simplicity with a (currently) fixed, per-surface exponent. I also included support for other map passes such as illumination for glowy sprite bits, reflectivity in 256 steps in conjunction with sphere or cube maps and transparency maps in 256 steps. Might as well include a faux refraction effect going with the later, so that transparent actors can distort whatever is behind them.

Noob to mapping here.

How is this achieved in HFFM? ie, displaying text on a wall via MESSAGES. How do you go about doing that in a map?

I notice all the letters in the message are a texture containing all the alphabet letters, just offset to show the desired one. Is it as jank as somehow copying that all over and then offsetting one by one to show the letter you want? And how do you add that in the first place?

I tried googling for answers but I only found ZDoom stuff on showing text on screen and all that.

Experiments that evolved into what I'm working on now:
a retro first person hack and slash across thematically different worlds like a dark medieval world, a desert with tombs, a mesoamerican jungle, a greco-roman city and the icy north (a hell dimension exists on paper). Those are the ones that are outlined at the moment and I'm working on the first few assets of the medieval setting and the desert (a handful of base textures right now), all while adding new features to the renderer.

I still have so many issues to solve concerning gameplay, I have no idea where this goes.
I work a full time job so this is more a fun side project for me.
Main inspirations were Hexen and Diablo 1+2, but that is giving it already too much credit.

It's got some unique ideas I've never seen in any other idtech levels, official or fanmade, but the art quality varies extremely and the levels themselves quickly drop off in engagement. It's biggest legacy is being the source of that kick sprite that every third gameplay mod used.

The ZDoom Wiki is partially really retarded, it'll tell you on every actor definition page not to just copy the actor and add it because it'll cause problems, and to always use inheritance instead.

Problem is that there's various bullshit issues with inheritance for monsters, like if you want to add a stompy footstep sound for the Mancubus, inheriting will ALWAYS break this because it will always go to the original actor's Chase state, even though you wrote a new one.
Copying Fatso and altering him as you see fit, and replacing the original, fixes this, without causing any problems.

Is there a way to increase vertical auto-aim distance in Doom?

I want to make large maps which play in the standard no freelook, no jump, no crouch tradition, as they should. But the autoaim system means any enemies further away than 1024 map units are impossible for the player to aim at. With the scale of environments I'm trying to make, 1024 is fuck all and you notice it constantly.

Surely there's an option in ZDoom or whatever port that increases this? It's fucking gay, and it would be even gayer if the only solution is to allow freelook.

Still playing through Arcane Dimensions for the first time, and actually found a level I didn't care for.
Obsessive Brick Disorder is just boring to look at but its thankfully short and the combat was good.
The rune was oddly easy to find and I'm not sure what the point of activating the gold and silver vaults was. They featured some good armour and a gun I already had.

I still can't believe I slept on this mod for so long though, even its worst maps are still pretty good.

No thing as "UV" mapping in 1994, at least not like we know today. Some very expensive packages like Alias and Softimage did it, but the approach was a bit different. In most tools like the old 3D Studio for DOS and Lightwave you had projection types. Planar, Spherical, Cylindrical and(if you're lucky)Cubic.

You can't appreciate the fun of surfacing a 250.000 polygons / 300+ surfaces spaceship with just planar mapping until you had to do it once...

You're gonna need armor at the very least. Really I think the best way to do a run like this would be a scavenger run: Never reload anything you find, pick it up, use it til its empty and then discard it. I've been doing that in general and it's helped my gameplay.
I was too married to the idea of only using what I bring in my loadouts, turns out that's a really fucking stupid idea because Vulcs eat most monsters for breakfast.

BTW - the testevasive map still crashes when the Orge squad spawns - but now its now happening immediatelty, had a look at the situation with notarget - its never the fault of the Flak/Armor one, only the 2 Ogres with grenades cause the error to occur - it seems to happen if Player gets out of their normal weapons range (when they keep shooting projectiles with
