People are weird and there are all kinds of strange ones out there. Earthbound is a big game for indie and arty circles. There are in fact people out there that say they played and loved it without really putting in more than an hour if at all.

You waste 100 times more time and emotional investment searching for mythical video game posers than any actual poser has spent pretending to like a game for no reason. If the way you currently engage with your hobby is not easily distinguishable from paranoid schizophrenia, maybe take up gardening or painting or something you can enjoy in a purer way than what you're doing now.

EarthBound is my favorite game of all time, but yes, it really is not anywhere as close to as good as every eCeleb makes it seem. I really fucking hate how it blew up in popularity. I found the Dragon QUest games to be much more entertaining than this one desu. DQV is one of my fav JRPGs and this one was just boring as fuck, maybe because I remember my playthough being just battles with 1 party member, which turn the combat into an absolute slog.

I gotta admit I had more fun with the gameplay on replays than on my first time, which I just spammed the most powerful PSI offense attacks and then struggled when I ran out of PP.
On replays I find myself relying less on PSI attacks and more on buffs/debuffs/ailments and exploiting Poo and Paula's psi pagnet and Jeff's HP-stealing machine. Jeff in particular is a character I appreciated much more on my subsequen replays when I actually experimented with his items (also he has the best weapon in the game, which isn't even equippable but you can use indefinitely from the menu, the bazooka)

earthbound posers do exist but it's never been like, super widespread

it's just that sometimes you'll come across someone who only seems to know/talk about the beginning and/or end of the game and you kind of put two and two together

it happens with games that are both topically interesting and have/appear to have some deeper meaning to discuss and people want to be part of the discussion, but some force is getting in the way of them getting through the game. might be a dislike of the gameplay, or pacing, but they like most everything else. for me this happens with like, survival horror, i've always kind of dabbled in resident evil and want to be "in the conversation" but i know i don't belong there, can't get going in silent hill either, but seems super interesting
