For the most part, converting the models so other sourceports can use them "worked" but there's this oddity in some of the animation frames where the model is on the floor.
The new weapon models are weird after converting, too: The rocket launcher works fine but the others are at the top of the screen when they're not firing.

If you'll notice anon, below the derp it says MAG: 0. This means it currently has a pistol magazine loaded, but it's empty. When you try to press reload, you're trying to jam in a new magazine into a slot that already has a magazine.

So the solution then is: first unload the spent magazine inside with your unload key, and then reload with your reload key.

Okay, if anything wants to try this shit, here's the upload. I tried it myself and the experience was quite unforgetable.

Gunplay is phenomenal. The guns are strong, big, manly, they take up half the screen. Pistol fires as fast as you pull the trigger, and MAC-10 sometimes doesn't even concerns itself with such minute details like whether you even have ammo or not. Finding dirt on she-bitch is not easy - my first death happened when I picked up a secret document and was frantically looking for a key to remove it from the screen. Movement is transcendental, it's safe to say I've never experienced anything like this in a first-person shooter. You walk around with a speed of old people copulating, and soon you realize that your real enemy is not the Secret Service - it's your own mouse that will actively fight you even if you don't touch it at all. I can only compare this to trying to turn a plane with a rudder in a plane sim. Soundtrack is a short loop of X-Files theme, but what else would you need when you're hunting for the truth? Certainly, this is the game that separates the boy from the men Pizzagate joke.

Also completely unrelated to HD but I highly suggest that you turn off texture filtering and get your mugshot unsquished. It looks godawful

>blurry: Options -> Display Options -> Texture filter mode set to "None (linear mipmap)"

>squish: Options -> Scaling Options -> HUD preserves aspect ratio set to "On". Play with user interface scale slider to taste.

You should avoid each of them on its own. You knew how this would end.
>>Quake 2 is going to be a thing soon
Really? I doubted that because of RTX and have similar logic when it comes to Quake 3 Arena and Live. The more re-releases like that we get, the better. They don't even need to be the best: just be good either for first time experience on PC and consoles.
>>Microsoft wants Quake back on track, QC it still a good idea, but it needs a "Realm Reborn" and i am not memeing out of it.
Interesting. I was saying that Champions needs a 2.0 version and new Quake (if in development) should focus on single player because of that for a while now.
>>Netquake is a thing, yes, but QuakeWorld Client is a thing later.
Honestly, I prefer NetQuake. Hope they'll improve ping and stuff like that though.
>Mainly because Quake carried Windows on its back, and its the sole reason for Windows embracing OpenGL support in 98.
...and now this port has full support of Vulkan API only. But I suspect that they would slightly improve DirectX11 because Microsoft.

I enjoyed this re-release so far: playing multiplayer and getting achievements. Will deal with DoE today and then only Dimension of the Machine will remain. Overall it's been a pleasant surprise because of both active/easy-to-access NetQuake and my desire to try myself in modding. This Enhanced version of Quake is perfect fit for a mod I was thinking about, but I'm still on "writing concept" stages.

They better at least add in updated models for Mission Packs and deal with team-focused modes shenanigans, so people could easily play DoE's Capture The Flag.

>>8060153
Man, that's a lot of crap you are holding into. Do yourself a favor and only hold one type of guns per ammunition you are planning to carry.
>pistol and smg
You don't really need to hold two guns chambered in 9mm; Drop the pistol. Do you really need a shotgun when you are carrying a vulcanette?
>vulc and hunter
If you plan to snipe with a shotgun, I advise you carry a side-by-side instead as it is way more effective in that and usually has a higher choke (if not 7).
>herp and derp
herps are really finicky. They have a limited fov and rarely do any doom maps require you to be stationary and fight a group of enemies descending on you. Only map I can think of right now, where you can set up a derp quickly before enemies start teleporting in is e4m1. It can be useful for dealing with closets tho. Generally I wouldn't suggest you mess with those. Derps however, are fantastic. Drop one whenever you feel in danger and you'll be safe until it runs out of ammo.

More "straight forward", I guess? Not much different from single player in terms of controls and stuff (not that I'm pro with that). Much like the real thing, I hated every second of it and it felt like it lasted ten times longer than it did.

Starting room was a bit frustrating depending on how the pain elemental behaved. I avoided having to fight anything in the ? key room by just letting the underground archies shoot me back over the ledge. Not sure if that was intentional. Final fight I didn't do much but run around and let cybie kill stuff then head to the exit.

Favourite fight was the archvile near the mancubus guarding the first SSG and skellies in the nearby hallway. Also liked the ? key room with ledges full of imps.

Sure.
The start isn't too cruel. I just had to figure out where the ssg was at. Later I figured there are two ways to get the SSG which is fantastic.
the layout is good and you can quickly navigate from one area to the other without feeling lost, due to their distinctive appearance and design. The map offers a bit more options for routing, as there are more than one way through and you can choose to engage in whatever fight you choose first
Yellow skull fight was where things goes a bit south. Things get a lot more claustorphobic from here to the end of the map. You are either thrown in a tight space and/or with a lot of enemies.
I thought the first cyberdemon fight was tough. I didn't even actually kill the cyber as I expected there to be a bfg or something in such a tight space; thus I decided to leave. I was completely caught off guard by the red key fight and just yolo'd it and tried to get out as soon as possible only clearing enemies that are obstructing my way.
The map goes by quickly as I mentioned earlier you can't get lost in this map and you always find yourself going from one fight to the other. I unfortunately didn't find any secrets in my playthrough but they weren't really necessary to actually make it through the map, which is nice.
The health and ammo pickups are quite well balanced and at no moment did I feel that I had too much or too little for a fight but then again I didn't feel obligated to kill all enemies and prioritized getting out.
I'm bretty pad at dewm but made it through with saves on uv in less than 20 minutes. This map was very fun

I actually didn't attack a single enemy in the first cyber fight and just opted for the cyber to do all the work for me cause I didn't want to waste ammo. It wasn't too hard as there is just enough space to dodge the projectiles and hide from splash. I say that it wasn't too harsh really.
>still had to kill most enemies
Again Most of what I did was just dodge the rockets so that they hit the groups of enemies instead of me. I actually got stuck in one of the closet rooms with rockets and health and the cyber came and saved my ass. I didn't even bother collecting rockets in that fight just went for the switch, got the key and out of that shitshow not even collected health as you see there 1%. Somehow ended up with more than 90% kills.

TFE/TSE are close to perfect, everything coming after has problems in one aspect or another. 2 looks fantastic but gameplay-wise is kinda meh, closer to Painkiller where you just spam shotgun 90% of the time. 3 and 4 went for retarded 'realistic' style but at least they still play like Sam games.

I appreciate the fact GOG tries to warn me that Quake 1 and 2 are not Linux-compatible if I put them in my cart and go to checkout. I mean, most people would probably say the best way to play them on any operating system is with source ports which are Linux-compatible anyway, but it's the thought that counts. Does Steam do this if you have supposedly Windows-only games in your cart on Linux? Probably not, considering their goal is to make everything work with Proton anyway.

On that note, though, apparently the new Quake remaster on Steam is pretty hit-or-miss with Proton; according to ProtonDB, some say it works and some say it doesn't. I'm probably the only one who gives a shit, but that really sucks ass — not even because I'd want to play it on Linux, but specifically because Valve whitelisted the original Quake for Proton, and now the less compatible remastered version was released as an update to the same product and probably runs by default. The same shit happened with the Unity ports of classic Doom games, which released on Steam as updates to the DOSBox-powered releases. The original versions had been whitelisted for Proton, and although I think running the Windows version of DOSBox on Linux through Proton is needlessly convoluted (considering there's a Linux version of DOSBox too), it worked. But the Unity port runs by default now, and doesn't work as well. Of course, even the Unity port of Doom is garbage compared to using an actual source port, which anyone who was serious about playing Doom would do. But the Quake remaster appears to be much less of a piece of shit, and is probably considered the "definitive" way of playing Quake now. It's pretty cringe that they'd make a Windows-exclusive remaster of a game that has been natively playable on Linux since forever, but it's not as if I would ever expect Bethesda to support Linux. I suppose I should be glad they haven't actively sabotaged Proton compatibility.

>Double Impact
E1 replacement for Doom 1, made by RottKing and Ralphis. They go balls to the walls and make large and hard techbase maps using all of Doom 1's monsters, very atmospheric and fun to explore, very good looking, harsh and fun combat. One of my favorites.

>No end in sight
Doom 1 megawad which aims to be tough. Apparently surprisingly sophisticated in spite of Doom 1's limited bestiary.

>No rest for the living
A 9 level Doom 2 episode which was originally made and added as a bonus on the XBox console port of Doom (which came with Doom 3). Quite well made.

>REKKR

I realized I don't really enjoy hectic maps with over 9000 enemies and constant skeleton traps and I refuse to make such maps, so I decided to only make id-style vanilla maps anymore.
Stuff you can relax with, on HMP with keyboard only.

So, I want to see if there is a consensus or at least some kind of direction about:
>What makes a map "comfy" for you?
In order to alleviate misunderstandings, try to formulate your answer within the confines of "gameplay" and "visual", though I am more interested in the gameplay side.

In order to give you an idea what I mean: This is a map I made some time ago where I started exploring that subject. It's not supposed to be a hard or crazy map, but a rather leisurely stroll and it's perfectly doable with keyboard only even on UV.

Map 15 secret exit is the most cryptic shit i've seen

Wonder if Valiant or Sunlust will release as add-ons, prob no

Part died the most: dont remember map, a small circular room in water with a Mastermind and Archviles iirc.

Core thing about BloodGDX is that it has the most friendly UI and best/easiest mod compatibility.
Plus it's the only one that's truly a source port of the original game without being muddled by other shit.
Fresh Supply is not even a port, it's a glorified total conversion mod for Kaiser's Doom 64 EX on his custom KEX Engine and is horribly inaccurate to the actual Build engine.
NBlood is based on EDuke32 and as such has Douk 3D Build code in it that isn't exactly Blood centric and mod loading on that one is utter cancer.
Raze is another meme recreation rather than a port, this time forked from GZDoom.
Hope now you can see why accuracy autists like me prefer GDX.

I think the important thing is separating the monitor's refresh rate from the game's framerate. Like, in original Quake, if you change the framerate it also changes the rate at which game logic is calculated, resulting in lifts that can kill you and other jank. IIRC Quake runs at 72 frames per second to play nice with 144 hertz monitors of the 1990s, and thus might be stuttery on a 60 fps monitor of today, and Spiked lets you run Quake at any framerate without altering the game itself.

Got back into Doom, trying to make coop work with a friend.
How is there no MP-focused source port with clientside ammo or at least shared pickups but not ammo pools?

Double pickups suck because one of us will end up with way more.
Respawning items is too easy.
Mods like Shared Resources still suck because one of us can spend everyone's ammo.

I found this which kinda works but it's laggy as fuck and doesn't work with weapon mods: https://zandronum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8300

Bigger bullets, energy weapons, and direct hits from explosives. For cyberdemons and masterminds in particular, use HEAT rockets or Bronto bolts. Regular shots in rocket mode are also serviceable. If your position is safe from counterattack, sustained Liberator or Thunderbuster fire (you can proc the beam directly on the mastermind, but not the cyberdemon) can tear the shield down fairly fast. The BFG doesn't work like in vanilla and will be fully effective when fired from out of sight, so it can work in a battle of attrition. A single direct grenade hit should suffice once the shield is broken. You'll get a decent window when it happens, because shields take longer to start regenerating based on their total amount and bosses have the highest by far. When it does start regenerating, just hit it with anything to break it again before it has time to recover significantly.

The SMG is pretty underrated and can comfortably tackle anything up to barons. Bosses are really all that's out of its reach because they have 8000 shield to a baron's 2000 or a knight's 500. Paired with some force multipliers to capitalize on the shieldbreaks, it makes a really solid core weapon for a loadout.

That's because they can't make any official statements like that before it goes through all involved parties, which is something they've mentioned multiple times.
>When they announced the last delay, they only did so on Discord and left an outdated development timeline up on Steam for months.
1C Entertainment are the ones responsible for updating Steam/GOG pages, including roadmap. That's only one of the reasons I believe they're mostly at fault of scuffed communication that's been apparent for who knows how long.
It's funny, in a way. After seeing people talk about how 3D Realms ruins games through releasing them in Early Access (not that I think going for this format with WRATH and Graven was a good idea) only to notice that all of these titles were co-published with 1C. Interesting coincidence, don't you think?

"Tropes" that make a map feel more retro, old school, vanilla, and just all round comfy in varying ways for me:

- Instead of having every monster be part of a tightly choreographed monster closet "encounter", just have them roaming the level, or set to ambush but out in the open. Let it feel organic.

- Have monster closets open up that "refill" earlier areas of the level that a player will have to backtrack through. It's not a sneaky ambush trap that tests a players reactions, but a surprise for when they revisit that area.

- Enemies placed liberally for no other reason than they are fun to kill, or as a reward for beating a harder challenge. For example, if the player just got the rocket launcher, throw in some hordes of fodder for them to gib.

I tend to mostly map in this style, so it's pretty casual most of the way through, but with 1-2 "Plutonia Fights" per level. That way they feel like tense little mini-bosses, and in my humble desu they work better in contrast. It's like having cold vanilla ice-cream on a warm chocolate brownie. As fun and impressive as the Plutonia, AV, Skillsaw etc style is, I can only stomach so much of it in one sitting.

Not all shielded enemies are made equal. You can brute force through mid-tiers with 4.26mm with enough firepower. This isn't practical of course, the most common tactic is to carry a grenade launcher for mid-tiers but carrying a handgun can help you a lot.
However once you get into barons and higher depleting the shield and then using 4.26mm or 12 gauge becomes a lot harder, thus I suggest you look for explosives be them rockets, heats, bronto bolts, or grenades. Try getting into the energy weapons. You can fry a baron's shield in seconds with thunderbuster.
All that said, the cybers and masterminds are a special case. They can easily one shot you and provide a small window for you to take them out. HEATs are a blessing if you have them.
Who said that you have to fight through the shitshow that is doom maps in the first place? Just find the exit and leave. People in vanilla try to break the progression of mapsets as much as they can with vilejumps, rocketjumps, glides and what not, yet here you are given all the tools to blow up sectors not doing what you are supposed to.

ahh that makes sense. kinda new to prboom source ports. i usually use lzdoom and switching from version to version. i'd get glitches like load in with no weapons

then to fix it just switch to a new weapon and overwrite the old save

>>8064759
true true i'm gonna do that. seems like they removed dehacked limits.

>>8064745
lmao. i've never messed around with the "player" section on the source ports. is there ones that have a they/them setting?

IIRC ZDoom ports let you choose Male, Female, and I think it's Other (in the past it was Cyborg or something, for some reason).

What I am wondering is - why switch versions in the first place? I mean, the wad isn't updating automatically, so you could finish the wad and then update; that way you wouldn't have any problems with savegame compatibility.

It wasn't a gender selector in Quake 2, it was a player model selector, the default models included just happened to be a male marine model, a female marine model, and a bulky cyborg model.

>What makes a map "comfy" for you?
A map is comfy for me if I can beat it on ultra-violence with no saves. I do not mean blindly beat it first try. I just mean that it is fun for me to grind out a deathless run of it without needing to practice with saves first, because I like to play without saves and pistol-starting every map, as if I am playing an old-school arcade game.

This means the map can either be short and hard (i.e. Scythe 1 episode 3 maps), or long and medium (i.e. Base Ganymede E2M6). And difficulty is highly subjective. My maximum comfort zone is Valiant, as that is the hardest thing I've ever beaten saveless.

Finally, let me just say that this isn't the ONLY way I think maps should be played. I find Sunlust jaw-dropping and I can't play it saveless on UV.

Regarding the level: I found it boring and unremarkable. May I recommend playtesting without saves? This helps eliminate any boring parts of the map since you won't want to replay them over and over.

>My maximum comfort zone is Valiant
I meant to say my maximum difficulty level is Valiant, as harder stuff like Ancient Ayys takes an unreasonable amount of time for me to grind saveless... and yet I was correct in that Valiant is my maximum comfort zone as it's spectacularly well made and currently my favorite map set. I think of the moon episode often.

With my stubbornness satisfied with a UV finish, I’ll be replaying it sometime on HMP. It was certainly a challenge up from Valiant.
