1. If there are default/canon names, use those
2. If only one character, name after myself
3. If there are classes, name characters after their classes
4. Otherwise, just name them AAA, BBB, CCC and so on

But now I just go with the default names, I think it's the way to be played, and if the MC does something gay or which I don't approve I like it to not be related with my own persona.

But since it's impossible to go with default names (I could have looked it online, but I like to play my game with 0 information from any external sources) I named them this way:

FFII: Characters from Antigona's Play: Polybius, Antigona, Tiresias and Oedipus. It was quite fun because Tiresias is supposed to be dumb as fuck and Oedipus is the one who is turned evil.


FFIII: I named them after the poet Fernando's Pessoa heteronymous: Fernando Pessoa, Alvaro de Castro, Ricardo Reis and Alberto Caiero. It was fun too for a while because I tried to put them into jobs that fit their biographies but in the end I didn't really care at all.

I skipped the 25 year old section, but otherwise correct. I only ever name generic, tabula rasa characters now in games like Etrian Odyssey, and for the most time I just create a character from whole cloth not based on anyone or anything from real life. It's pretty depressing to load up a save from your old PSX memory card for FF7 and see the names of the cousin you never talk to anymore, your high school buddies who've been MIA for the past decade, and the girlfriend you lost your virginity to only to end in a major breakup the year you graduated.

Think I used to go with default names, but now I like naming them myself just because I think it helps more with immersion and because I know the official names already.

Usually just whatever comes to mind first based on their appearance; maybe I'll go for a theme among the group if there's a really restrictive character limit or something, to make things easier. Don't do direct references to other things, but maybe something vaguely relevant if a character really reminds me of another one.

I use my own name if there's a female character I can self-insert as.

I hit the "35 years" stage by age 16 or so for RPGs with predefined characters. The only time I'd ever name anything after school friends was sports games and typically only then when I could modify/hack their attributes. 10yo range for me was characters from fantasy novels like Dragonlance and David Eddings Sparhawk books.

I've always went with the default games. In games where you name the hero and there is no default I would use "Hero". In games where you make a party of characters I would name them after their classes, e.g. I would call the thief "Thief". If there's no straightforward way to assign descriptive titles then I name the first "1" and number them all. I've been doing this since I was 5 years old and haven't changed in 30 years.

Always something like this. Geomancer is disappointing by final dungeon and never gets better. Bard is decent. My ninja was a ranger until ninja became available and was my highest damage dealer until eureka. Black belt/monk was good through the whole game.

In Final Fantasy I, I named the characters after locations from IV: Fabul, Mysid, Baron and Eblan.

In pokémon I only ever named the trainer, the rival being "Rival" or "Gary".
