Imagine it. Imagine a console that had both PS1 and N64 games at the same time, supporting each other. Imagine a machine that all developers worked on. There would never be competition or reason to own another company's machine ever again. Freedom.

Idiot. Having companies coming together to form a monopoly only brings stagnation. The universe you wanted to be in born is devoid of any real games.

Imagine a future where instead of n64 + playstation it was just the Supernintendo with the disc addon

Even in a decentralized system you still end up with industry wide standards so that development isn't completely foreign from console to console or studio to studio, so you still end up with stagnation after about a decade of innovation since too much innovation with too many independent actors would lead to chaos and all the actors instead have to settle on 2-3 standards.

>there was a standalone console in the works that combined both the Super Famicom and the SONY CD add-on together in one SKU accepting both cartridges and CD based media, not unlike NEC's PC-Engine Duo or SEGA's Wondermega
>there was also going to be another SKU that was just the add-on and would connect to the underside of Super Famicom's already in circulation by utilizing the EXT port underneath.

the thought of addons being introduced and bringing new functionality to old hardware is a fucking turn on holy shit, market viability my ass just LET MY GADGETS COMBINE

I reckon if Sony and Nintendo joined to build a console that video game making would be the ones creating the wars rather than between console manufacturers.

>Dreamcast Zip Drive is an unreleased add-on for the Sega Dreamcast, allowing for data to be saved to Zip disks. It was designed by Sega in conjunction with Iomega, creator of the storage format.

>The drive was conceived after there was a strong demand for more storage space than Sega servers were offering to save email and web pages onto. The drive could also save game-update data such as new map data for Quake. The 100MB storage disk drive is essentially the same as the ones made for PC's with slight modifications made to make it compatible with the Dreamcast.

>The device was made to fit under the Dreamcast, using the slot the modem plugs into on the console. The modem then plugged into the side of the Zip drive. Also included is a front-mounted USB port, which would have allowed the connection of all kinds of new peripherals, to help promote the console as a home entertainment/information system.

>The Dreamcast formatted Zip disks were not set to be compatible with the PC Zip drives, but it was suggested that software for the PC would eventually be released to solve this issue.

>The Zip drive reportedly made it to a late stage of development, being priced at $199 USD and being set for release during the third quarter of 2000. The reason for its cancellation is unclear, though the Zip disk format was already in decline by mid-1999, and it was likely an expensive add-on to manufacture.

A prototype of the unit is known to exist, and was last spotted on eBay in autumn 2007.

storage for downloadable content, before Xbox changed the industry forever by including a hard drive in every unit Well, technically PS2 did it first but it was optional and not every game took advantage of it.

The DC add-on was conceived much too late to avert the inevitable. Would have been neat if it was made available much earlier, PSO would have been a whole different beast.

they *did* make it, but by that time I bet they wished they hadn't. I wonder how different things would be if they had launched with this tech instead of continuing to main cartridges.

That reminds me, I forgot Satelleview was a thing.

it really did seem like a sidegrade. The specs suggest it wouldn't have brought any meaningful boost to CD games over cartridge besides the usual (more storage space for animations and more, higher quality music including redbook) but would also have to deal with load times. It was more like the PC-engine cd-rom addon than the MegaCD, which for its part included hardware sprite scaling and rotation and another, faster cpu.

Had these units included something like a SFX chip with it to aid the main cpu... we might have seen some cool-ass shit.

I just wish the super nintendo continued in america until the year 2000 or something. I think that would have been an amazing experience to have a console with an add-on component that actually fucking worked and was amazing and got supported. I would have preferred a super nintendo cd over a nintendo 64 and ps1 to be honest.
