Spent some time playing the Quake port, it's decent but not something I'd play over another source port, movement is a somewhat off and it feels generally more inconvenient with the intros and having to connect.

>> No.8051159

any detailed analysis of the changes introduced to quake with the re-release yet?
I'm interested in the technical aspects so let's put aside the launcher, addon manager and multiplyer features

what I've understood so far:
- slightly different lighting and movement (because of kex)
- greater polycount for the enemies
- full soundtrack finally available for ID1+ROGUE+HIPNOTIC
- no vis/lit enhancements to maps
- the same pak file format

what is unclear (to me at least)
- are the community-made vis/lit files compatible with this relase?
- have the pickups' and weapons' viewmodel/worldmodels been changed?
- do enemies have different/smoother animations?
- is the new episode playable using qss?

Supporting this is supporting proprietary, non-futureproof software

John Carmack and id Software knew what they were doing when they released the source code for Quake in 1999. They knew what they were doing when they chose to write all of the Quake code in-house rather than relying on proprietary third party libraries to create Quake. John commented on the problems using a paid proprietary sound engine for Doom caused them in the long run and it was one of the reasons why their future engines strove to be a self-reliant as possible thus resulting in some of the most easily portable engines ever created. The new Nightdive version of the game is a disaster and an affront to everything Quake stood for.

The approach would make perfect sense for console releases given they will always be inherently proprietary and closed walled, however there was no reason for the PC release to be like this. One of the things talked about extensively on the release stream was the fact that Quake was so important because of its modability and inevitable open source nature; how does this new project at all reflect either of those things? How does it reflect anything the Quake stood for or what made the game great in the first place? How are problems supposed to be fixed in this new version? Begging Nightdive to consider fixing them? What happens in five, ten, or fiften years from now when it no longer works on more modern hardware and operating systems? You beg?

Nothing about this new release for PC is good. It is an affront to everything that made Quake great and unendingly relevant.

>Judging the whole dw because of few guys is as bad as few guys on dw judging db and /vr/ because of few guys
I'm not really involved in any of this unfolding soap, but its obvious as an outsider that this isn't a symmetric relationship. /vr/ is unmoderated from a community perspective (jannies being orthogonal, they arent operating as /doom/ community members) - there isn't an overarching imperative to conform, whereas by your own admission you would likely be shunned by the DW in-group based on the whims of the leadership team there. This is presumably what people mean when they say
>doomworld hates x
>doomworld sucks y
It's possibly to say this *because* of the apparent homogeneity created by censorship and social pressures to conform.

Didn't they make some change recently? Something like "view planes". So a window can effectively be treated as the whole monitor.
All I know is that in some cases it breaks gsync, because there you have the option of enabling it for the whole screen or that + windows. And some windowed applications still get it even will that disabled.

> I analyzed the contents of DOTP and found out that they have made any messages external for language support, i.e. the map files themselves only contain $variablename for all messages. While this can be reverted, what is inside of the custom progs.dat cannot. Apparently they also added six runes to DOTP including an episode ending text (besides the two new maps), so we are not only talking about a few messages, but also gameplay changes. Ultimately, if custom ports don't make adjustments for this, you will have to run everything through Kex. That's it. Same goes for the new models which are in MD5 format, making sure nothing will just work with any other port. That's the part I really hate about this remaster, regardless whether it was done intentionally or not. But well, we all knew already this wouldn't be your new bread-and-butter port to be used for everything, just like Doom Unity.

>Are you sure your perception hasnt been warped by tabloids and twitter? There are faggots in every age bracket and "social generations" are poor generalizations.
Fair point, but I think millennials are the worst offenders of acting like they do no wrong, then again it could be a vocal minority thing.
>I'm not sure from your post whether you are saying generations offer some predictive insight, or not.
I meant more so that your overall character isn't defined by demographics like generations, or demographics in general. Granted there are people from different generations that have perspectives that are based on what said generation faced (war, hardships of any kind, etc), but I don't immediately assume that the person in question has/had a specific lifestyle based on when they were born (or anything else for that matter). Even if they did, I wouldn't generalize the fact that they had/have the life they had/have on their demographic at all. EG a millennial that's lazy and pretentious isn't that way because of when they were born, they just happened to be that way and it somehow is a common trend of sorts. Going back to what you said about social generations, to say that someone is the way they are or will turn out a certain way specifically because of what their age is is way too simplistic of a conclusion to make, and the exact same thing can be said about any other demographic.

Pic related, thanks for making my nogg jogg, anon.

>They weren't allotted the time by the publisher to fix the port.

They had a contract initially stating the amount of time allocated to port the game. They accepted it which means they probably thought they could do it and do it right. They couldn't, then blame the publisher for "not giving extra time".

Yes it's common for things to get delayed or to be allowed post release patches, and that's on the publisher for not investing in that. The point is if there is someone to blame, then the blame is shared, and your opinion is easily manipulated.

I'm sitting on ~7 years old Lenovo G505s that doesn't support Vulkan either, but port works well enough on DirectX or OpenGL. There're some graphical glitches, but nothing too major - I was able to run through original episodes and DOPA on Nightmare for achievements without much difficulties (technical, that is). Multiplayer also works fine if you ignore scuffed ping, but that's seemingly a common issue + I'm from Russia, so... Yeah.

I don't understand what kind of black magic my potato laptop is casting, but that's not the first case of it running something it shouldn't really be able to. Anyway, maybe it will work well enough for you as well... or get some sleep like me, I don't know.

That reminds me about this quote from Blood's wiki:
>"Problem is that I also avoided using any BUILD code at all. That was my mistake. The second mistake was failing to understand the clockrate/tick rate of BUILD. Originally, the logic that I reverse engineered was running at 2x the speed in Kex, so everything had to be scaled down. I should of researched more on that rather than just scaling everything I hated BUILD's collision code so much that I didn't even think twice about the impact it would cause when I rolled out my own if I am ever given the chance to revisit FS. I am going to add an option to switch between collision modes."

What I'm saying is that Atari is only a part of the shit formula that gave birth to FS.
Pointing at Atari as the SOLE reason for FS being this bad is simply dishonest, considering how long BloodEX was in the oven and in what state it was released.
And it's not even about playtesters, as one of the quotes said, when issues at the launch were obvious to anyone who spent at least some time playing Blood.

Disabling interpolation in this new port also disables movement interpolation. It would be nice if they were separate options. But in the half hour I played with this port it seemed fairly decent. The demo in the beginning played a little weird. Stiffly. But didn't seem to be *wrong* to my recollection.
Also weaponbobbing was off by default which was off putting.
Doesn't seem like a bad port, but not perfect. There are better ports for PC (ChadQuake), but it seems well suited for console players. Hopefully they can clean up the minor rough edges.

It just means that was the weakest computer they had at hand for testing it. I would be very surprised if the system requirements were actually that high, most probably it will run on a much weaker computer than that.

I know you said to put it aside but I couldn't help to look a little bit into it, not sure if it was mentioned already tried searching the thread. You can change the URL it uses by changing the "ui_addonsBaseURL" cvar and ironically while the Addon browser in-game requires an account linked you can browse to the URL in a web browser and even download without any account! Which it just loads some JSON file with the needed data.
