Hey /vr/ so last time there was a thread up, someone mentioned how the translation for this game was picked up again. Any news of the progress? Has it been completed yet?

As far as I can tell, it's the same as it ever was, with plenty of people who putatively have the language skills "expressing interest" in translating it, but no one with the more niche skill of game hacking wanting to touch it. To do it justice, you would have to go with Forever With You, which is available on the PS1, Saturn, and PC. Most people seem to go for the SNES version when they want to finally be the one to do it, which I assume is somehow simpler, but it's the worst major console version of it. As far as I can tell, the person in this picture was cancelled, or someone involved was cancelled, but as you can see for yourself, the Twitter account is now defunct.

https://www.reddit.com/r/visualnovels/comments/o5akc7/tokimeki_memorial_english_translation_needed_i/

Plenty of people pop up every now and then like this person who are "willing to help" if someone will do all the technical work. I mean, so am I, it counts for basically nothing. But hey, if anyone who knows PS1 dis/assembly wants my "help," I've translated a larger, wordier game before, feel free to message me somewhere: https://dinklations.wordpress.com/contact/ I'd be more than happy to dump a cumbersome script on you and sit on my ass.

I’ve skimmed the surface of what various programs can do (not just for this game), but haven’t seen something yet that would potentially create a good user experience. Or is even capable of it, as most of those programs are just for personal use. There’s one that I toyed around with that is supposed to create a sort of downloadable pack for a game, but it seems kind of like it still has one foot in the beta stage.

If you mean zTranslate, the creator's been working on a retroarch-integrated version that's way more stable from what I've seen of it (it's partially integrated now, but can't support downloadable package translations). The game that's being used to test the technology is a Dreamcast dating sim, so it 100% works even for text-heavy games like that. It should be going public VERY soon.

These seething responses literally make my day. The fact that people think someone has to larp to know another language is amazing. And it's only an issue with Japanese because they fetishize it without having the balls to sit down and do something productive. Japs got fed up with life sim and stat gambling games by then.
I'd still wager the reason why tokimemo1 works so fucking well as a video game is that the dates are 10 seconds long and the game accommodates cheating, save scumming and greatly rewards foreknowledge. Life Sim writers often tried fleshing out the characters more and that resulted in long ass visual novel cutscenes that don't mesh well with stat gambling gameplay.

>> No.8049468 [DELETED]

And that's where tokimemo surprises you, dates are often little trivia quizzes where you have to answer to the girl what she is thinking. They're as one dimensional as can be and feel a bit manipulative since you're molding your personality to match the girl. And then the game catches you by surprise if you savestate and pleases Shiori too much she'll identify you as fake and won't enter tokimeki state locking you out of the ending right at the final hours of the game. It's unexpectedly clever for an otaku coomer bait like this.

Saturn is arguably the best version (extra bonus ending options and some minor censorship kinda sorta reverted), but the difference from PS is pretty small
PC Engine is the hardest to win Shiori in; they made her easier in the ports, so play PCE for a challenge.

If you check around the various learning communities there's a lot of people think they're fluent and they struggle to read beginner content that was dumbed down for language learners and they end up relying on Google translate and get a lot of shit wrong as a result. It's a problem with manga too.

One of my favorite Famicom RPG's was translated by this kind of "fluent" person - twice - and they both did such a bad job that you can't even finish the game without a guide because nothing makes sense. It's awful.

There's literally no point in playing any of the Tokimeki Memorial games when further refinements to the genre exist, as seen in Amagami and FotoKano. Too bad for you, neither of those is translated either, but the sheer quality of life that comes from
>requirements for achieving different routes and endings is not based on arcane knowledge of which stats you're supposed to raise and who you're supposed to ask out on what specific day to which location
obsoletes the entire TokiMemo-like dating sim. With the elimination of luck based elements and requirements of prior knowledge, you get to spend less time consulting guides and more time reading, enjoying the game. Anyone who disagrees with this post is a boomer, a retard, or both.

Yeah, but at least you can get to those cutscenes in the first place without having to google the exact conditions to unlock them. Yes, even Amagami has its exceptions, but for the 6 main girls, even someone entirely unfamiliar with the game can deliberately and consciously choose whether to go for Suki/Nakayoshi/Soen endings and get them. Someone without prior knowledge going into TokiMemo is pretty much just making educated guesses and hoping they're doing things correctly, and not even for a worthwhile payoff.
97% of the memorable cutscenes in Amagami can and will be seen by the average person who plays it. That is a much higher rate than could be said of the average TokiMemo player. Therefore, it can be said that TokiMemo is poorly designed in comparison.

If it makes anyone feel better, this is a fairly low-skill game in terms of how much Japanese you really need. The dialogue options aren't that nuanced, it's shit like you go to the zoo and are supposed to figure out if you should or should not say things like "Man, those animals sure look tasty." Plus, if you have any modicum of empathy, the voice acting should give you good feedback. The only thing is that some the more involved skits might blow by you a bit.

I don't know that I'd be so brazen as to call myself a "master," but if you want to take the Dink route to learning Japanese, it basically just involves throwing yourself at things you want to consume and just icepick-ing away at it with dictionaries and whatnot until you understand it. It can be tedious, and probably isn't the most efficient way to go about it, but if you're sick of being told to do Anki reps, I would say just play the things you want to play and try to make it work. Just be aware that it takes a good deal of effort and patience before you're going to feel comfortable with it, especially if you're not already bi/multilingual (which makes picking up extra languages easier). Or preternaturally gifted in language arts, though then you probably wouldn't be asking.

>>8059148
In my case, I translated an RPG Maker 2000 game, which is super low-skill. If you're working with amateur dev tools, you're limited only by your ability to understand what's already a user-friendly program. There also exist many tools for extracting and reinserting text, especially for older game engines.

With actual consoles and computer games made by real companies, you need to learn the basics like hexadecimal as well as the quirks specific to the system. A lot of this stuff can be looked up on places like romhacking.net, but other aspects you kind of have to search around or ask various communities, especially if you're trying to work with a system that's had very little or no work done with it. I think people typically get their feet wet with consoles that are pretty thoroughly researched already, like SNES, but I guess it depends on how much general technical knowledge you have already. Don't take my word for it though, I've never dabbled in this kind of stuff personally.

Oh, also, if you're using a game to help with learning, I would recommend using the "three strikes" rule of note-taking. If you stop to look up every word in every sentence, you're probably going to have a bad time. But if you notice a word or phrase popping up frequently (i.e. at least three times or so), write it down in a notebook and/or put it into a virtual file along with any relevant readings above or to the side. This will not only help you commit it to memory but will make getting through that specific game easier, since you can refer to your notes if you need reminders for words that it uses often. For example, you'll see 良かった often in Tokimeki Memorial, as seen here >>8060709 Just give yourself a good amount of space to add any extra layers of meaning or personal thoughts, since phrases like this are pretty flexible.

All this is to say that it's OK to shoot above your comprehension level, you don't have to understand everything all at once to be able to gain something (although in a game like this you may perform poorly). Focus on a few things that catch your eye and learn the nuances, rather than bombard yourself with a hundred terms a day that you merely learn clinical interpretations of.

It really depends on the tone and circumstances of the speaker. Would the character say something kind of coarse and outdated? Then "tranny" works. People need to understand that sometimes characters are supposed to be unlikeable based on the things they say. But on the other hand, outsider communities who apparently take no offense to anything need to understand that liberal use of swears and non-PC terms isn't necessarily correct translation/discerning localization, either.
