Is this game any good? I see it mentioned as a hidden gem sort of thing, but not sure if that's justified or one of those things that's just become a meme.

Yeah, it's good. It's a platformer among many platformers on the N64, so it's easily overlooked, but it's got some cool ideas. The developers went on to make Sly Cooper, I believe.

They did

It's one of those games I vaguely remember seeing at Blockbuster, but not finding the box art striking enough for me to pick it up. Guess I missed out

I played it for a minute when it came out and thought it was gay. Literally. A homosexual robot making yiffing noises. Roughly 10 years later my youngest son decided to become a bandwagoner and wanted to play it. Great times. Yes, the box art is shit. Another reason I disregarded it the first time.

Based Botformer. Huge variety of missions. Lots of vehicles and physics puzzles. Strong recommend.

It's on the level of BK and Mario 64. I think it's better than BK.

Personally I think its only okay. Better than average but not as good as the best platformers on the system.

Play it when you're out of platformers to play. When it came out it seemed like a whole new kind of game to me just because you were a wheeled robot. I replayed it a few months ago and all the wheel brings is some awkward controller moments. There's a lot of personality and character to be found in this game, but at the same time it can feel very bland. Every now and then something will stand out is what I guess I mean.

I think its a really good platformer and only underrated because not many people talk about it compared to SM64, Banjo, or DK64. It's not as polished as those games, but I think that roughness gives it a lot of character. In fact, I think the game's presentation in terms of music and level design is very charming and gives a very nostalgic feeling to it (even as a kid). I don't know how to describe it, except they really captured that 90's arcade/theme park park feeling well throughout the game. The first level is a great respresentation of the game. If you enjoy the first level on the pier, then you'll like the rest of the game.
Anyways, with all that said I think its a great game. It ain't perfect or a 10/10 must own game, but if you like 3D platformers especially from the PS1/N64 era, you'd appreciate Rocket.

I keep getting this game and Starshot mixed up because the premises are so similar. The boxart always had me think it was a racing game or stunt game.

Startshot is one of the worst games on the system

Yeah and I kept getting it mixed up with Rocket. I can't help but see Rocket's premise as extremely cheesy and kiddie, almost to a distracting degree because of games like Starshot.
