Welcome to The Garage, a thread where fans of racing vidya can discuss their favourite arcade, sim, kart, and any other kinds of racing games. If you’re looking for something new to play or are new to the genre ask other Anons for recommendations and remember to gear up and have fun.

The previous thread flew through the windshield: >>7992167

>Interested in a series to get started with?
https://pastebin.com/Vke5tf9e

Remember to bump, /vr/ has been faster as of late and threads get archived much quicker now. Don't be shy: ask questions, share experiences! If anyone has ideas for community events, speak up!

>If you guys could go back and revitalise one racing game, which game would you choose and what changes/improvements would you make to it?
The one on the op pick.
Besides just QoL things like widescreen, i'd add properly animated cockpit and tried to make AI more agressive, if not better.

That's quite interesting, I think most racing games would get an AI adjustment these days.
Given the current flurry of RPG remasters, what would your reaction be if a company decided to remaster racing games? Obviously it would be dependent on the game, but could the add/improve enough to the point that you'd be tempted to re-buy it?

>> No.8032664

>>8032282
I'd most likely be not that excited. Examples for remastered racing games so far were Moto Racer 15th anniversary edition and Colin McRae Rally Remastered, and both were ports from smartphones.
But if some were coming, i'd hope for unchanged graphics, just resolution/FOV/draw distance adjustments, fixes to AI if necessary and ironed out collision bugs. Lots of older racers could use proper replay features.

Tell your uncle that he's done a great job, anon.
I especially liked the credits in Have a N.I.C.E. Day, stylized cartoon with a glimpse of the euro dev studio work at the time.
Did he shared any stories? Have any material like concept art and cut content?

honestly anon, I recommend getting assetto corsa and downloading mods. I love GP legends but getting it to work properly is a nightmare at times.

NFSU isn't so hard when one isn't playing at 480i on a 20" crt in 2003. I'm a big advocate of high resolution gaming in general but being able to fucking see that pesky traffic coming when roaring down the road makes it a lot easier to avoid (as opposed to a slightly yellow blur of pixels next to the slightly green blur of pixels that is a roadside billboard).

>> No.8033137

>>8032992
I love the Mafia 1 low poly-realistic texture aesthetic too much though, and Assetto Corsa has it's own problems

>> No.8033747

Asked this before the last thread ended, but is the first Gran Turismo especially difficult for anyone else? It feels like there's a massive gulf in difficulty between the Sunday Cup and every other championship.

>> No.8034573

>>8033747
lrn2 racing lines basically. All races in GT1 have the a.i follow the perfect racing line and the clubman cup isn't much of a jump over the sunday cup.

>> No.8035257

>>8033747
You'll notice that there are a few cups which seem to be significant steps up in difficulty.
Don't be surprised if you need to repeat a few of the cups in order to get enough funds to upgrade your car.
Overall I did find the RWD cars more manageable than 4WD cars in terms of winning races, although high powered RWD cars can still get loose easily.

>> No.8035283

>>8033747
I'll have to revisit GT1 sometime, but what I vague remember from the last time playing it many years ago is that I couldn't get to grips at all with the handling model compared to GT2 which in contrast is one of my favorite video games of all time. Maybe next time I'll have an easier time getting into it, because I really wish I could like both of them.

OpenGT2 PC port with adjusted/adjustable AI skill, more tuning options and a more expansive event synthesizer where for example you could select courses yourself (also backwards and/or mirrored) or select the AI cars from the ones in your own garage, essentially allowing you to create your own racing series. Potentially also netcode for P2P online play.

>> No.8035380

>>8035257
Given GT is - unsurprisingly - full of 90's 4WD where understeer was a common issue they are much harder to drive in the first two games than later ones. FF cars become an animal to drive once you start slapping turbos on them so overall the FR cars with a bit of caressing for the monsters are the easiest to drive. Once you bind accelerate to the right analog they becomes so much easier to tame.

>All races in GT1 have the a.i follow the perfect racing line
That makes sense. I played Tourist Trophy without lines, and the AI gives you a lot of opportunities to improve on their laps.
>>8035257
>Don't be surprised if you need to repeat a few of the cups in order to get enough funds to upgrade your car.
Now I remember how I was able to get further when playing this game as a kid. Get enough money to buy the GTO Twin Turbo, then brute force my way past everyone else thanks to horsepower alone.

>> No.8035401

>>8035383
The most efficient start for GT1 is used RX7 -> viper (get racing mod) -> castrol supra GT. That covers the most amount of races with the fewest cars that are top tier.

>> No.8035406

>>8035380
I find 4WDs much easier to drive than FRs in the first two games, besides the sluggish turning (be it due to the drivetrain layout or the generally higher weight). At least they don't spin the wheels at any speed below 80 mph like tuned up FRs do.

The raw straight line speed and acceleration makes it a monster for the average player. Being able to plant your foot and go whizzing by the pack down the straight is always a great feeling.

I think the best cars to use are the Viper (GTS or RT/10, user preference) for A Class, Toyota Soarer or Mitsubishi Eclipse for B Class, and the Honda Civic for C Class.
Most of those times look pretty tough to beat though, hopefully /vroom/ has some Gran Turismo gods that can knock a few of them off.

I can have a scan through of the rest of the racing games on the site and see if they have leaderboards for any others. I know they don't have any for GT2, but they may have some for Arcade racers. Pretty sure I saw some for the original Ridge Racer, so I could post those.
There's probably a much easier way, like having a google doc that connects to the RetroAchievements API which could automatically refresh leaderboard data, but I'm not intelligent enough to know how go about building something like that.
