I get that Saturn emulation is difficult, but why can't Capcom rerelease this version of this and MMX4 opposed to the inferior PlayStation versions?

Because every game developed for the PSX that used hardware transparency had to use dithering patterns + composite output on the Saturn to achieve the same effect.

I get that, I played X4 and Symphony of the Night on my Saturn via composite and it was fine. The problem is that if Capcom re-releases Saturn X4 today, it's going to look like shit on any modern display, and nobody is trying to hook up an Xbox or PS5 or Switch to a CRT except for some fringe autists, and they're not the target audience of such a re-release.

It's not just people playing the cheaper Japanese version, but also the fact that the most fans who do play via emulation it chalk up the audio differences to the emulator. In fact, if you rip from actual discs or compare real hardware, literally everything audio-wise is objectively lower quality in the Saturn version. X4 probably doesn't suffer from this because Saturn was the lead platform, while 8 was ported to Saturn late in development to be multiplatform and had extras thrown in to make up for the Japanese release gap.
Best thing about the Saturn version is the underrated Boss Character Postcard section featuring chibi Wily and exclusive runner-up artwork - it's a shame Legacy Collection 2 didn't port it.

Is that version a port like a few other Neo Geo titles of the time?

KoF2000 and SvC Chaos are straight up ports from the original source, and as such make use of the original higher quality audio assets, and also render directly out to PS2 modes, so inputs feel good, and they fleshed out some additional options, made hidden characters selectable, and fixed a few things.

(I'd throw Samurai Shodown V in there as well, but it's sort of a half port, due to SNK not giving the developer the source code to even work on the original Neo Geo version when they did that one).

Most other Neo Geo games on PS2/Xbox after that are emulation, and they suffer terribly for it. Input latency is rough, video is ugly, and it's mostly just the arcade versions with nothing new, really.

I never tried Metal Slug 3 though and that is right in that era where it might have been good.

The PSX and Saturn output at different resolutions. Many games developed for the PSX first and ported to the Saturn didn't take this into account, so the graphics look slightly "warped"

>> No.8032287

>>8032253
You are correct that the resolution differences cause problems, but I just want to add that this is specifically issue not because inherently the resolutions were different between the consoles, but because the Saturn doesn't support a mode that has that width.

Both the PS1 and Saturn had several different resolution modes that they could display, including some wide pixel options beyond 320, such as 354 (in 240p modes), and various interlaced options, but the Saturn for some reason did not have a 256 wide mode, like the Genesis did (which was typically 320, but had a 256 mode as well).

256 is what the SNES used, and likely Capcom choose that for MMX4 because that's what they had been doing previously.

I think it was much more typical for games to be 320 and above on PS1, but any games that were coming from the SNES era would opt for the lower width in some cases.

I don't get Sega, they ported this two times on PC, and the Steam port was somehow more fucked IIRC on top of removing the Game Gear games that time
However, some fans basically restored everything that was wrong with that port, but also everything that was wrong with the GC DX port in the first place and added back the GG games. It's called Better SADX or something, there's probably some steam guide or something about it
