Here's something I've been working on, Quake's weapons for MBF21. More of a proof-of-concept than a gameplay mod since the balance is pretty broken and I haven't playtested nearly enough. Some shit doesn't work how I'd like it to yet: Mjolnir should consume cells and keep swinging when empty, the lightning gun should be more like Quake, custom bullet puffs don't exist in mbf21 yet, etc.
Tested in dsda-doom and briefly in woof, make sure you load the .deh file (I've had problems embedding it in another mod). Feedback and suggestions are much appreciated.

As I get further into Quake 2, I am developing heretical feelings. Do I like it more than Quake?

The gunplay is a fair grade better. Mainly the super shotgun, rocket launcher, laser rifle thing, and the railgun. For some reason you get a ton of railgun ammo, and it's feels great.

The rhythms of Quake 1 have never been for everyone, particularly how the shotguns function, and the fact that the nailgun becomes useless after acquiring the super nailgun. I'm not the biggest fan of Quake 1's shotguns, but the imaginative atmosphere, mix of enemies, the speed of combat, they all mesh together in a wondrous mix. And this is without mentioning the myriads of amazing maps.

There wasn't much in Quake 2 that I enjoyed more than alternating between the rocket and grenade launcher in 1. I also don't like Q2's shotgun balance, not a fan of returning to slower switch speed, and I miss the "super weapon" having it's own ammo pool.
I like 1 more but 2 was fun. I was going to try the mission packs but didn't want to have to rebind everything again.

Some neat stuff. It would probably work well as is in a map designed around it. A few things:
Why does the lighting gun consume ammo in sets of 10? couldn't it just consume it really fast and you possibly reduce the max ammo for cells? Not having the ss on the 3 key and the chaingun equivalent on 4 and rl on 5 really messes with my muscle memory. And the biggest thing: the mjolnir is humorously suicidal in woof. You might want to investigate and report this to the maintainers of that port because it's probably an oversight in their implementation.

I do like Quake 2, and mechanically I'd agree that the weapons do feel a lot nicer. The community content has simply never been as strong, sadly, but it's kind of easy to see why.

The thing Quake 1 and Doom is that, by a happy accident, their default texture sets and art assets were both generic yet characterful enough that a modder can make anything they like from it. They only have a few hundred textures each but they cover indoor, outdoor, sci-fi, industrial, and medieval. They're graphically limited enough that a mapper can paint in very broad strokes and let a player's imagination fill in the gaps. The assets from those two games are essentially self-contained creation kits.

Quake II is a different matter. It has a stronger, more specific vision, the texturing is more distinct. But what that means is a modder can only make mods set on Stroggos, in Quake II; there's inherently less variety in the default assets. It didn't get long in the limelight either- People thought it was the hottest shit on release, but what Half Life had in its favour is that people could finally use a game to make something approximating reality. The Quake II scene didn't stand a chance after that.

They're pretty fucking unintuitive, but it's not the worst thing in the world. If you don't already love Serious Sam, you'd be wasting your time fucking with Serious Editor. My favorite thing about it by far is you can adjust the lighting in real time as opposed to Trenchbroom where you have to compile every time you want to see your lighting.

To me it makes more sense to have 2 weapons on the same slot be the same type of weapon, I think it would be more confusing to have the SSG/nailgun on slot 3 and supernailgun on slot 4 or what have you. As far as I know you can't change weapon slot bindings in MBF21. I got used to it pretty quickly when testing.

One more comment, the real reason why the lightning gun fires in bursts is so that the sound plays correctly. I'd love for you to be able to just fire like 1 ammo unit at a time but the sound wouldn't work. With how fast it fires finding a continuous sound would be difficult, but I could tweak it. I don't mind how it works currently, most of the situations where you'd want to use it you're not concerned with using it really efficiently.

Level design is the part I can't get over with Hexen.

Love the aesthetic and the setting, but wandering around forever looking for some bullshit hidden switch or door, with every wall always being identically textured so you have no idea where you are, it sucks. It's the same feeling you get in early 90s wads like Memento Mori and shit. Spartan and needlessly obtuse.

Are there any mods or map packs that make it basically the fantasy version of Doom, with much more action-focussed levels? Because that'd kick ass desu.

Man we've collectively had 28 years to get good at it, I don't think the difficulty is really a factor you can judge it based on. If I was to criticise Plutonia's difficulty it wouldn't be just "because it's hard", but because there's no gradual progression in intensity. It has literal meme-tier skelly closets from Map 01, and never stops memeing the whole way through.

However, I think it's pretty close to objectively possible to say the architecture, layouts, and overall aesthetic cohesion is better than any other IWAD. TNT is a goddamn mess, half the levels suck total balls. Impressive for 1996 maybe, but it's not 1996 anymore, and besides that, Doom never looks good when you try too hard to make it realistic anyway, Doom looks best when you toe the line between artistic license and suggestive abstraction.

John Romero understood this from the very start and that's why his levels are the stand-outs in Doom 1 and 2, and still look reasonably good today.

Looked up Sandy Petersen's Field Guide of Cthulhu Monsters after he mentioned it in one of his Quake videos and it's pretty neat. Was thinking of what Lovecraft monsters could've been added to original Quake and previously I stopped on Deep One, but I prefer Ghoul more. Maybe just mix them together + Ghast... Thought of it as a variation of Zombie Knights from Arcane Dimensions: melee units that moves towards you with jumping attack, except they're easier to kill since they're not undead. Meant as low tier enemies.

I finished Quake 2. Some of the tank commanders near the end take far too many railgun shots to go down.
The game got better as it progressed, as the levels became more straightforward and backtracking was reduced. I was only playing on hard, but it felt much easier than Quake 1. The only times I really died were due to environmental hazards.
I prefer it to the original, for now. But I haven't played any maps for that outside of the mission packs.

It has more to do with the fact that there's just not much you can do with Doom's 2.5d engine, especially with large, layered maps. That's why the original Doom takes place in a series of discrete bases and why D2's city levels are so awkward even if they're good. I love challenging stuff like Plutonia, Plutonia 2, stuff by Erik Alm, Skillsaw, Ribbiks, Aurelius, Joshy (or Darkwave). I've never found it too hard or cheap. And hell i'm over 30 with shit reflexes, but then again I play modern wads with hmp. Difficulty selection is there for a reason. Why pick the hardest and then complain that it's too hard. I play this stuff for fun. Bastion Of Chaos was only one, that I found too hard even on hmp. I still do respect the work put into it, but i accept it's not my cup of tea.

Different anon here, Agree with this. The only thing I can say for the dither is that it gives the objects texture, but it doesn't work out well for things that otherwise seemike they're supposed to be smooth. It's not a good use of it .

If you include Ribbiks, you have to include Skillsaw and Erik Alm. Bonus points for including Gusta, Joshy, Eternal in that list. All of them have made challenging maps and developed the modern style further. Erik Alm basically being father of the whole style and the biggest satan of them all.

Aurelius has made 2 great maps, and guy is basically promising newcomer. Not a big name yet. Do we go hating new mappers now who go posting maps unanonymously?

Major Arlene is not a big name mapper on anyone's point of view. She is a moderator, tuber and cacoward reviewer. That's how she is known. She has made a few maps, but neither were a huge successes.

It seems these big name mappers are just your personal vendetta on new wave of mappers and mods. Most of these aren't big names excluding Ribbiks and Dragonfly, who are big names for a reason. GZDoom's main source of slowdown is Decorate and ZScript actors which is very high level and unoptimised, and are required to be parsed in linear sequence for shit not to break, meaning no hyperthreading/multicore.

Thus GZDoom is heavly bound to single core single thread performance and modern CPUs simply aren't made for that. Even modern Core i7 won't give you much of an advantage over half a decade old i5.
The GPU mostly matters only if you decide to put on shaders and post processing.
