>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

bros for the first time IN MY LIFE I have seen the fabled gigantic CRT on the side of the road. Not just any side of the road, but my neighbor's house specifically. He was trashing one of those late 90s gigantic home theater CRT tvs that I grew up on in my old house. But I live in Florida and by the time I had walked outside it had been raining for 6 hours and the garbage people were like 30 minutes away from the house. Plus the TV weighed a shit ton. By the time I came back the TV was gone. And there was no crt general thread for me to complain in. I want to kill myself.

I wish I had taken a picture but I was already getting beat down in the rain. If I had to guess it was 40" but I obviously didn't measure it or anything. It had a large wooden frame, with what appeared to be two composite inputs and one component input. Brand started with a T I think. My neighbor is loaded, frequently drives all over the state picking up weird shit from junk yards, thrift stores, Facebook market listing, etc. He's the kind of guy that has three trashed classic cars in his yard that he's fixing up. He already flipped one that he restored. I wouldn't doubt it if he had a good TV like this. He's also an insane audiophile. I'm almost insulted he didn't even ask if I wanted it considering we talk about this stuff. I'm gonna yell at him next time I see him.

The only reason they don't use Chinese people is because they're somehow even more incomprehensible or don't even bother learning English, at least that's what I saw at uni.
In any case enough of the thinly-veiled /pol/, did anyone else have a 14'' Matsui CRT as a kid and do they still use TVs from that brand? I had one and had my PS1 hooked up via SCART, always worked fine enough. Sold it years ago and thinking about buying it again for old times' sakes.

After waiting over 2 months, I finally got my BVM expansion board in the mail.
Got my two boys set up. A PVM-20M2MDE and a BVM-D20F1U, sitting on cheap Ikea coffee tables and hooked up to ten-year-old $50 PC speakers.
It's a shame how much the BVM outshines the PVM. The PVM was taken from a hospital and its age and use shows. It takes about 20 to 30 minute to fully warm up and reach appropriate brightness.
Still, it's great for consoles from the 4th gen and lower. Great scanlines.

Got this Sony KV-27FS12 from my dad as a birthday present. He knew I had been looking for a CRT for a while and I guess he just found this online or something, came with the original remote too.
It's a flat screen but I'm not too anal about that and aside from a little bit of screen sag in the center, it's in almost perfect condition. Got my PS2 and SNES hooked up with component and s-video respectively. Even got to the service menu and toned the shit out of the settings.
Got 3 modes now that I use depending on what I'm doing. Max sharp setting for 6th gen and on stuff, zero sharp for anything prior, then for tv and anime I put the slider somewhere in the middle. Wish my camera could capture the screen a little better, but honestly, I'm loving this thing.

Just enjoy it and play Games on it. And watch old and cool Movies and especially lots of Anime.

Remember: CRT's are soulful little works of machinery. They are not like TFT/LEDs TVs and therefore don't have perfect Geometry. They are all unique. You're neglecting PC games and everything surrounding /vr/ that benefits from higher resolution.
You could play the Super Mario 64 PC port in 480p or 1080i on a HD CRT. Very soon OoT too.
Or Gamecube and PS2 games with higher internal resolution. Wouldn't Metroid Prime be nice like that?

I would also like to mention that 1080i at 60 fields per second is not the same as 30 frames per second. It is much smoother than that. You get 60 different fields of motion. Combing can be a potential issue depending on how fast the action in the game is.

Sometimes the full detail of the original texture couldn't be seen at original resolution. Although that is more of a 7th generation thing.

Just cleaning up the plastics, was really thinking about taking the tube out of the front frame to better clean but the tube being so heavy would make that really awkward and it be very likely i'd damage it. I would rate it as A+ for a PC CRT.
It is capable of very high resolutions and frame rates and has a very fine dot pitch. HD content will look amazing on it.
Retro stuff will look great with the use of shaders.

The fact it is a flat-screen CRT is irrelevant.

I'd snatch it up in a second if it was available.

For me, using a CRT is all about nostalgia and authenticity. SCART/RGB/PVM's are a neat novelty, but neither me nor my parents knew what the fuck any of that crap was 20 years ago, and I feel like it would be way too much time/money/resources to mod all my consoles to get the best image quality out of them even if I did get a PVM or something.

What I like to do during the day while I'm working on something is play an old TV broadcast from archive.org or ToonamiAftermath through an old Roku connected to a VCR via RCA which then connects to my TV through RF. I RGB modded my Sony that had at best a S Video connection. Depending on the TV you have a few options on how to do it. I did the OSD Mux type, for my TV the hardest part was soldering on to surface mount resistor pads. The rest was working out the correct resistors to use to bring the rgb singel into spec to look right. I crimped dupunt pins on the end of the rgb lines of both my input into the TV and on the female scart socket I used and just kept messing around with resistor values with a brightness scale on TV (used resident evil on the ps1 to show a brightness scale). My resistors did match anyone else's value for the record so trail and error are needed.

I'm pretty impressed with the visuals on games like DoA2 after using a cheap third party cable, especially since those fucking HD retrovision cables dont seem to be ever coming out dev hell, but I wonder if that pairing would look that much better than it already does on a standard 1080p monitor with VGA input.

I bought a sony WEGA CRT (mainly due to component video) the model is KV-29FS110

Composite stuff like NES, SNES, Genesis, and PS1 looks great.

but PS2 looks pretty bad, its like flickery and looks like it has low refresh rate. also its missing the scanlines.
Apparently from what ive gathered, its because the PS2 outputs a 480i signal which makes the signal look much less good, as it doesnt have scanlines and the image looks flickery, but some games actually get output at 240p (Megaman X collection for example)

This model of PVM has RGB inputs, but they're only RGB, not component. But theoretically, could madman do something like an IC replacement or custom firmware allow it to support component? Unreleated to the guy two posts above, newbie Amerifat with a similar goal of connecting a PC to a CRT TV I just got.

I'm actually already able to do so, using the S-Video output from my graphics card, but the output looks a little strange, and I'm limited on the available resolutions.

Am I correct in the assumption that I should be able to just hook up a DMS-59 to VGA adapter, then a VGA to Component cable to my graphics card and use crtemu's drivers and applications to force it to output whatever component signal I want to my TV?

I'd imagine just using the s-video would be a bit more ideal, going straight from graphics card to TV, but I can't find any information on that kind of setup.

I think the Quadro graphics cards from Nvidia should be investigated more for this. They don't have the restrictions on custom resolutions that the GeForce series cards have. And they still support analog output.

Thanks for the help, I was thinking about it wrong, I just assumed "VGA is analog, it should be easy to convert to other analog outputs", but while you can easily get RGB HS and VS from VGA's pins, you'd need to transcode those 5 inputs down into the 3 you'd use for component somehow, such as with something like this: http://www.jrok.com/hardware/RGB.html

Of course, that seems to then create the issue of needing to combine the two syncs into composite sync, which apparently it may be possible to configure CRT Emudriver to output composite sync on one of the VGA pins.

What were some of the ways people got around the issue of combining sync prior to a software solution like that?

You can make a simple circuit that combines sync, or you can get a device such as an extron rgb 192 that can combine them for you in many different configurations. Some people have had success simply tying the two wires together but that creates a much too high voltage signal. You are right that graphics cards can generally be made to output csync on either sync pin, but specifically hsync is typical

I already have a COMP2RGB, it'd just be neat to have a way of not needing it in my setup anymore if there was some sort of mod I could do. Again though I don't see anyone bothering with my idea

It's the cheaper, lower performance brother to the PVM series. Usually has lower TVL and lacks RGB input.

However, they are still excellent monitors.

A little unrelated but what do you guys think of plasmas vs oled for retro vidya? Just ordered an oled earlier this week but just the other day found a late gen 50 inch Panasonic plasma, but with a jvc 32 inch crt and now a 55 inch lg oled my tvs are probably met, don't need to pick up the plasma I suppose.

Fuck, I just measured it and it's actually 20". Thought it was 23" due to the model name.
Posted on Freecycle to see if anyone has a 24" or bigger. Tried to login on Facekike, but the 2FA code is on the phone that died and now they want an ID to verify it's me (although I have the recovery codes, that somehow don't work), and I can't be bothered to make another account just to access marketplace.
