Post games, artwork, and music.

The Amiga was a personal desktop computer that first appeared on the market in 1985 and became successful with the 1987 release of the cost reduced Amiga 500 micro version.
It was roughly comparable to a default IBM-AT 286 in CPU speed, but had custom chips for video and audio, not unlike Tandy machines of the day, but more capable.
Those custom chips gave the Amiga an edge until the widespread adoption of vga and soundblaster.

The Amiga line of computers sold quite well compared to other micros of the day with just shy of 5 million units lifetime sales (all Amiga models).
Still, it could not compare to the install base of IBM-PC compatibles or gaming consoles and remains a niche 16-bit system to this day.

The Amiga games library saw many arcade type action games, although it might be argued that it was better suited for the typical computer game genres of strategy, simulation and RPG.
Dungeon crawlers like the Ishar series were popular examples.

This is the real problem. The entire gaming market for these European micros revolved around massive IPs getting licensed out to random guys in their bedrooms. If they had actually been willing to spend money on actual competent devs these ports would look a lot different. Instead we got Eurojank.

An OCS Amiga couldn't do 1:1 CPS-1 games anyway, you'd really need an AGA machine. But if they'd had the source code and other assets they could have at least gotten something somewhat accurate especially as the arcade game was same CPU.

They probably would have sold better if they had more than a £1000 development budget :)
I probably phrased that poorly overall, though -- I more so meant that budgets for games on micros was absurdly small compared to consoles. Yes, the market was not all licenses, but the big names that did get licensed basically always got shit ports because nobody was willing to pay for quality. Just a torrent of low quality, almost bootleg-like content.
There were still standout titles outside of the licenses - but it still seemed like the signal to noise ratio was a lot higher than on non-Euro microcomputers. I say this as an Amiga owner who loves games like Lemmings, Worms, Apidya, etc -- those are overall exceptions. Even a lot of games on "best Amiga games" lists are full of Eurojank because the budgets and development schedules were just too low to make something exceptional, and they always managed to choose to cut corners in the worst possible spots.

There were also games that I never played that much but were very scary or uncomfortable
Like Metal Mutants

There were also lots of games that had plain superior production value and were sponsored by shit like Chupa Chups or McDonald's
Mick & Mack

Cool Spot, Zool, were all similar
I felt bad for the final boss in Golden Axe when his own axe dropped on him
Apparently artist for pic rel who made a lot of shit now does furry porn which is unfortunate
Overall those were very good times, blessed computer I still have mine.

Light gun games tended to work well on the Amiga thanks to mouse controls, and Walker was kind of an evolution of that.

Both your assumptions and math aren't solid.
If the game had a 4 meg rom, then why would you think that more than 1/4 of the whole game had to be in memory at once, for a versus fighting game?

Also, neither the SNES nor the Mega Drive had enough RAM (3DO also only 2 mb ram, 1 meg vram) or processor speed, if we go by your metric. Still could get reasonable ports on those systems, even with downgrades (SNES version cartridge size: 2MB).

Looking at fighting spirit and the way it looks and runs on an OCS Amiga, there is no reason not to expect a decent port of SF2 with some graphical compromises (like the console versions).

It's a tale of incompetence from the dipshits who messed up the port to Capcom who licensed the game to dipshits.

But still Amiga made its mark on the world for about 8 years with its influence in gaming and tv production while Ibm 286 AT's were just used to type letters mostly and in airports. Its a bit like how 3dfx only lasted for a few years.

I have a similar thing that I got 2nd hand years ago and most of them boot but pretty much all have at least some errors. I think you can actually write amiga disks on pc using a program, on atari st it can read pc formated discs. They are still useful for formatting to try and use again.

Atomic robokid on Amiga, so damn much more detailed than the sega version but the amiga runs at a lower framerate. I wonder how easy it would be to hack it to work with faster cpu's.

Having a closed off eco-system with software exclusivity is good, while the opposite is a problem. That's like saying the way apple does its thing is good and the way of PC, Android, Linux, etc. is a problem.

One problem the Amiga had that is often overlooked is the controller. Most games relied on a single button which makes anything that isn't a shoot-em-up a pain to play. Most games that supported 2 buttons didn't start coming out until 1991 or so, and even then relying on a single button was the standard, and most joysticks only had a single button. Even 2 buttons is usually not enough, the game Yo! Joe for example supports one for attacking and one for jumping, but you have to duck and use button combinations to switch weapons. The Amiga can handle at least 7 buttons, as the CD32 controller has that many, but Commodore should have introduced that controller from the start and not waited until they were almost falling apart.

The one button controller problem started a lot ealier.
Lots and lots of games used more buttons, and you simply had to use the keyboard in tandem with the controller or mouse.
Simulators, RPGs and strategy games of course used a lot of keyboard commands, but many action games like Turrican (extra keys for grenades/mines, bombs/wheel mode, pause/exit) or Shadow of the Beast series (inventory, conversations) also needed the keyboard.
Most of the time it worked just fine. A controller with 3 buttons or more would have been nice, and very much in the original specs, but it wasn't strictly necessary, save for a few exceptions.
Thankfully nowadays that point is totally moot, since you can rebind your keys however you want on emulators.
Best time to play on Amiga is now.

>and you simply had to use the keyboard in tandem with the controller or mouse.
Why have a controller in the first place if you're just going to use the keyboard anyway? It's not like platforming games had you jump with the spacebar while you were shooting with the fire button.
>A controller with 3 buttons or more would have been nice, and very much in the original specs, but it wasn't strictly necessary, save for a few exceptions
It was necessary for essentially all non-shoot-em-ups. Even the Famicom which came out in 1983 had 2 action buttons and 2 menu buttons.
>Thankfully nowadays that point is totally moot, since you can rebind your keys however you want on emulators.
A lot of the WHDLoad versions also add support for the CD32 controller.

Why use a steering wheel if any other analog device will do the trick? People like peripherals. They are fun. Did you forget something so basic?
>It's not like platforming games had you jump with the spacebar while you were shooting with the fire button.
Yes, it was sometimes like that. In Turrican you used the spacebar for your bomb attack and wheel mode and alt for grenades, while controlling the player character and shooting with the joystick. Did you ever play any Amiga games?
>It was necessary
No.
If it had been "necessary", millions of people would not have been able to play games on the Amiga.
There is not point in continuing this.
This is just a continuation of the "Amiga bad" narrative.
I get it.
It's "bad", because it's different. So you make it "better" by making it more like things you know about. Like consoles.
But that doesn't matter. It is irrelevant.
The prevalence of one-button joysticks was not a problem. It was at most a minor annoyance.

Yes, I have an Amiga 1200. It's a good computer but this controller thing was a way bigger problem than many people seem to realize. Commodore should have introduced a 7 button joypad right when they launched the computer, and included schematics to encourage it becoming a standard.

(and is about as friendly as it gets)
Otherwise, miSTer is the easy FPGA route.

Quite big thing I've not seen many people talking about anywhere - the oft rumoured CD32 version of Hired Guns was finally released onto the internet:
https://archive.org/details/hired-guns-cd-32-dev-files
Not massively different, but it DOES seem to genuinely be in 256 colours, although the improvements are very subtle. Seems more detail on character portraits, new more detailed skymaps in levels but the alpha seems kind of washed out in game, not sure if that is delliberate or just because it was unfinished. Has weird glitches on the loading screens but seems to otherwise work fine.
Also has unrelelased stuff like loads of joke characters of Psygnosis staff, an unused music track (sadly by far the least good track from otherwise incredible soundtrack) and graphics from when the game was originally going to be a D&D style settings including bits of an intro animation with dragons and a castle in.
It also has an odd new intro that is just a load of still images, and a completely redone menu system that can be controlled entirely with just a mouse. Apparently also now supports full CD32 pad controls, but not tried that yet.
Also dev emails and letters and other interesting stuff mixed in, and I think source code too.

It's basically the same as any other standalone emulator.
1. Get FS-UAE (portable or installer, doesn't matter which)
2. Get BIOS Files (Kickstart-Roms is what they are called in an Amiga emulator) and import them in FS-UAE (the launcher has an import button right there, when you fire it up)
3. Get whdload ready games that come in archives. Just drag and drop them on your launcher.exe / desktop icon and the rest runs automatically.

Of course, you can spend a lot of time customizing and configuring your emulator, but just getting stuff to run is easy.

I probably won't have much use for all the extra stuff, but I'm downloading it anyway, cause Psygnosis. Those guys were just awesome.
They made so many different games, the creativity on display was insane. No matter how jank the result, they tried almost every genre under the sun.

Did this come out after Amiga's heyday, as a homebrew, or was this released when the computer was still relevant?

>> No.8005225

>>8005139
It was commercial and came out in '96.
Maybe the last year the Amiga was relevant? 150+ commercial games were released for the Amiga that year. Those numbers fell down to some 50 - 60 games in '97 and '98 and tanked to about 20 in '99.

>> No.8005234

Other things I found:
The "mouse" version doesn't play the new intro. You have to check the icon in Workbench (click on icon and go to "information" in the menu) and toggle the entry (execute=hiredgunsintro) so the brackets disappear and it will then run the intro on this version. Also CD32 saving seems to have never been implemented, but all the old save options are there. Hard disk saving won't work out of the box (and like you can't save to HDD if you're running it from CD, duh), but if you copy all the files to hard drive and then make a folder called "SavedGames" in the games' root directory, you will be able to save to hard drive.
Some of the weapons have new firing and reload sounds, for example the mounted minigun carried by Cim from game start.

More Hired Guns stuff:
I think all the maps were redone for this version to use the new lighting engine. There's an old test map called "Action1.map" that just has the same simple lighting as the original, so I assume there must be changes in the actual maps themselves to support this (they also have newer modified dates than the originals).
There are no new maps on the game disk.
HOWEVER, there are some new levels in a file called "scotmaps.lha". This contains 5 new levels, some of which do interesting stuff with the new lighting.
To play them, copy them into the maps directory and replace one of the existing maps with it. I recommend using 23.map, that's the first fast map "Animal Enclosure" from the list.
Bizarrely in the map archive there is also someone's Lemmings 2 saved game as well.
