Free from the bullshit of all these mish-mash of costume parts, no microtransaction crypt, just a regular ass one, with lots of bonuses.

Cartoon graphics that work well with the ridiculous animations.

No guest characters besides original Kratos, and he at least makes some sense instead of 80s/90s movie hero/villain number 39284.

Towers that aren't randomly generated every week, and give you random fucking loot. LOOT in a fighting game.

An actually good story, and good call backs to the franchise history.

If there's one downside to it, it's that the most complete version of the game is on Vita.

I will never understand why Mortal Kombat got as big as it did. Graphics/art direction is shit, gameplay is shit, story/lore is retarded (not that you should play fighters for the story in the first place, but apparently people are drawn to MK's story for some reason). And the main gimmick (fatalities) get old after like the second time you see them. And after the jump to 3D, the games got even worse (until MK9 returned to 2D gameplay). The FGC has never respected MK.

MK1 just had the blood/gore gimmick but was not a very diverse and competitive game, but it GOT ATTENTION

MK2 got more colorful and was a decent sequel that built the lore (something Street Fighter at the time was still trying to figure out with tons of licenses)

Then we got THE MOVIE which made it a pop culture staple because it was the first video game movie that didn't bomb or suck

Then we got MK3, the competitive nature was increased but was still "samey" for the most part

Then the jump to 3D with 4, failed cartoons, movie sequels, live action series and never returning to arcades again. It shit the bed.

But it made it's mark with those first 3 games and a major movie and they will survive on that and that alone

Unironically a lot of people got into the series because of the lore. It was a huge step up from "go save the princess, the end" and RPGs weren't really detailed or popular in the west at the time, so MK's realistic looking characters with histories and motivations was really cool for the time.
