Also you can play Shining in the Holy Ark which is shorter, but kinda sucky. You can play Dragon Force I/II which is like SF regular, and super fun. Also Langrisser 1,2,3,4,5 are all on Saturn and are like 5 hours a piece. Those are a fairly popular anime tactics game too.

Watch some walkthrough of Holy Ark. I mean it's not THAT BAD. Wisdom is garbage though. I owned them all, but only still own SF2, SF3:2, SF3:3, and Wisdom because of the high prices the other went for before Saturn emu this past 5 years.

But, with Holy Ark: the thing is you won't get what's up the the MC in SF3:3 if you don't play and beat Holy Ark. His story actually concludes in SF3:3 The other plus is it has very very nice music if you like Sakuraba.

It's honestly not that bad and you could find out what we complain about as you play. It was made 3 years before SF3, and it shows.

Holy ark is great, but a bit short and a fair bit of just wandering around for ages because some of the levels have holes in the floor and some have to be turned upside down.
It also start becoming a slog with some of the last few levels and the random battles become annoying when you get ones that can on hit kill or drain HP

Learn that in that game it's designed so you must run from some enemies when you're not ready. Still you must grind money by revisiting a previous dungeon, but you're kinda stuck in enrich sewers so you're pretty fucked since a big fight is coming up. I recommend using a previous save and level and grind for promotion.

The only reason 3 has to come after Ark is because the only explanation of Garcia is he was Arthur's kid, because he was BORN with a Spirit already in him. Wisdom doesn't count, according to material found through the series the land that Wisdom takes place is a forgotten mythical world of lore. So it's basically a far off/unknown world or made up as a story to tell kids.

SitD is pretty easy for a dungeon crawler.
The hardest part is the beginning where you have to grind a bit at the start and get money for the equipment.

regular fighters can outpace her level progression because she is so limited early game. once she even has the mana to match the pace, she's already multiple levels behind. heal is a spell that all other healers have, so she's easily replaceable. none of her other spells matter, because somebody does anything she does, but better. the other 3 healers have aura and/or boost, which are significantly more useful spells than just heal, and they provide their user with higher experience rates, thus outpacing sarah as well.

while yes, sarah can use healing to outscale fighters, she'll still generally reach that "wall" of experience after they already have, and without really providing much to the team besides basic heals or melee attacks that somebody else could have done better. even if you consider all healers "busted" because they can scale past the kill experience wall, she is still objectively the slowest and least useful healer of the 4. in addition to being dumpy looking, she's just not worth the effort.

Shining Force 3's first scenario was localized, but the other two scenarios were not. They have translation patches though. The first Game Gear gaiden game wasn't localized for Game Gear, but is included with the second gaiden on Shining Force CD (which was localized). The third Game Gear game wasn't localized, but has a translation patch.
The only other untranslated games are the ones after the original devs got bought by Nintendo. Most of the ones after Shining Soul 2. Known as the Tony Taka games, because Tony Taka does the character designs for most of them.

Correct. It's the "Shining" series, not the "Shining Force" series. Shining Force (the SRPGs) only represents a portion of the series. Shining in the Darkness and Shining the Holy Ark are DRPGs. Shining Wisdom is a top-down action-adventure (Zelda clone). Shining Soul games are dungeon crawl ARPGs (kinda like a Japanese Diablo clone). Dunno too much about the others after Soul 2.

I’ve played through part of SF1 and I didn’t find any issues with understanding dialogue. However, there were a few names changed in the translation process (Lug got changed to Luke, Khris’ species is listed as Elf rather than Kyantol). I don’t know if the later GBA remake published by Atlus corrected any of this.

Shining Force II has a retranslation patch that keeps its Japanese subtitle (War of the Gods). Dunno if there’s any other retranslation patches for the games.

you mention the goddess staff. i dont recall how to obtain that so early in the game ("before creed's mansion"), but you would have to be a vicar to equip it. i dont recall if you have to also be a vicar in order to use the aura effect from it, but if memory serves, you dont get experience from casting support spells from items like boost from the protect ring or attack from the power ring. so while you could make use of aura 2 somewhat early, karna and frayja both learn aura beyond that, dont need to repair items between battles, and guaranteed to gain experience from it. trying to say that the goddess staff fixes her problems is disingenuous, because its just a cheap crutch that is still outclassed by the others.

You get it from deals if you kill Dark Madam (who carries Protect Ring) with a character who got full inventory

And level 20 is easily achievable for Sarah by then. Your point? Goddess Staff gives her a shitton of attack for that stage of a game and Aura 2. If you're not powerleveling or something it should make her useful for entire game.
Of course, promoting her to MMNK makes her as good in the longer run, as the class is pretty broken, but you dismiss it for whatever reason.

I always found Sheela the least useful, whether in lvl 40 promotion runs or in regular ones.
Also, I found getting Tyrin earlier more useful in the long run, as Karna is easier to level and you get a second Vigor Ball around that point, so there are only two healers for a good chunk of the game anyway.
You also compare her only to the healers, which is a weird way to look at her, when she is more useful than quite a few regular fighters.
And I still don't know how she's supposed to fall behind in levels, when she's supposed to either attack or heal nearly every turn of the battle, when she's the only healer for a good chunk of the game at that, giving her the steadiest XP gain in the force, unless you conserve mana or keeping her too far away from enemies for whatever asinine reason.

i feel like you worded this wrong because it sounds contradictory as written. if you took tyrin, you didnt take karna. if you took karna, you didnt take tyrin. while i agree that tyrin is a great choice because freeze 3/4 is a great spell, karna is a literal god compared to sarah because she has boost AND aura. sarah is literally designed to be thrown away and replaced.

she really isnt, unless you dedicate time and redoing battles to cater to her. there are plenty of fighters that handle themselves just fine without the catering, and fill out the team.

10 exp per cast is trash. unless you are saving 1hp monsters for her to kill (which will also deprive fighters of exp), she wont keep up. "but blast!" oh look, something else to spend mana on. she still has to reach level 10 by that point, by which point she is undoubtedly behind, but then you can allow the monsters you're catering to her to have 6 or less hp (if they even have an open side by the end of the turn with her trash agility and only 5 movement). look out, we got a badass over here! she's weak and fragile (as a healer generally should be).

so yeah, unless you're grinding and catering to her, she will fall behind. she doesnt have the mana pool early to keep up with the exp rate that simply killing gets you. by the time she does, she's already behind. and if you cater to her to catch up, what exactly is the point of all of that effort? what does she actually provide? a fighter? there are far better (with less effort), and plenty to fill out the force. a healer? she is outclassed by all of them. some characters are "cool" like jaro or claude, but they are outclassed by others. sarah isnt even cool, and all of the coomers have trash taste.

Western versions of SF2 are weird in general, but it actually balances it out.

Kinda, but I always found Boost to be a winmore spell and that without powerleveling, her stats tend to be lower than the other 2 MMNKs. (still decent though, especially for a pre-promoted character)

How the fuck? There are more opportunities to cast a spell than to attack for every character in the game. All you basically need is just 5 heals + 1 monster kill (or a few attacks) to level.

Her attack stat isn't that bad, unless you gimp her at the very beginning of the game, somehow.
If anything, her attack being lower might allow you to get both XP for her attack and would allow to feed XP for the kill to someone else afterwards.

just wanted to point out (you both may already know this) that after you unlock the gates of Moun, you can egress that battle (where the game auto-injects Freyja into your force) and then walk back to Creed's and get the other 3 heroes you didn't choose.
So when the guy says you get that 2nd Vigor Ball around that time, he's right.
You can pick up Tyrin, go through to Moun, and then 2 fights later go to the Monastery and pick up Sheela and the 2nd Vigor Ball to promote Karna to a MMNK as well.
