Do we still do this? I was 2pussy4gauntlet when it was popular, but I feel strongth welling in my body.

I edited the copypasta to make the gauntlet a bit more bearable, as well as clean up the OP. Rule tweaks will be spoilered, and optional. Also tell me if my suggestions are horrible/good.

Start at NES, and work through in the following order: Or do any order
NES
SNES
GB/GBC
Megadrive/Genesis
Turbografx16
DOS
NeoGeo
GBA
Commodore 64
Playstation 1

>-------------------------<
>RULES
>-------------------------<
1) You have three days to complete the game without assistance (each game gets three days, though RPGs are allowed a week due to length).

2)YOU MUST START BACK AT SQUARE ONE IF YOU FAIL A CHALLENGE. (why wasn't this in the copypasta?)

3) Savestates are allowed ONLY for the purpose of taking screenshots and ONLY if your emulator/game in question does not have a pause function. If the game has save points like Metroid or Final Fantasy, savestates are acceptable

4) Rerolls are allowed under the following conditions:
-The game you get requires some sort of hardware functionality that cannot be accurately emulated to complete (eg, Boktai) OR if you don't have a USB controller (tfw) and shit gets ridiculous on a keyboard.
-The game would otherwise require cheats, hacks, or alteration of the software to complete due to a bug (eg, Cheetahmen II)

5) For games that have a high score or no end, the rule is
>if no high score has been established, set a goal and beat it
>if you're playing something another anon already has a high score on, beat their high score unless it's ridiculous. I'm talking to you, Tetris Thread Guy.

no, as there were also games in that genre that let you save anywhere, save points were actually part of the gameplay

personally I think anyone that is into older game on emulation should just get a USB controller or a converter for a controller they already have, it's not that hard to find or expensive

also the rules shouldn't change just because one person thinks they are "too challenging"

1st off, noted. Thanks for replying.
2nd:
- I figured order didn't matter, since the console doesn't necessarily affect the difficulty level, and it's not like it's from oldest console to newest
- The save thing was just because games with save-points+emus can fuck up.
- I can't afford a USB controller. Marijuana is a hell of a drug.
- I didn't change them because they were too challenging. The only adjustment I made that would alter the difficulty is the high-score one, and I think that's fair.

On that note, time to play a boring RPG. Thank you based gauntlet.

well this game is pure shit, as expected when I saw the ocean logo and realized it was a game licensed from a forgotten movie based on a comicbook

the controlls are ultra slipery, not in the ice mechanism way, but more like the game doesn't stop registering that you have stopped pushing forward when you should, more than one button doesn't register at once, therefore you can not jump and move forward at the same time or attack and move forward at the same time, making certain parts needlessly hard

also, notice that rope that almost blends into the background he is standing infront in this pic, unlike most games where you can just walk over the rope and maybe jump down if you like, the game gives you a meter where you have to press forward while pressing a and b repeatedly. if you don't you fall off the rope and into that area below where the thug will beat you up and most likely push you into the pit. To add to this, you have to press both and a and b at exactly the right moment (which I haven't figured out, since I sometimes still fall to the area below) or else the meter will not show up and you well just fall off the edge, re-rolling

oh I was wrong, the movie was not actually based on a comic book at all, but was the result of some director wanting to make a film based on a comic book but not able to get the rights to any, so he created his own comic book style hero. Also evidently the film was popular and well recieved critically, just forgoten with time. The game is crap though.

Film history lesson is over, lets see where the re-roll takes me.

/v/ Gauntlet, /vr/ may have taken it now, but that doesn't mean stuff needs to be taken out, or ultimately that the gauntlet would be better without the GBA.

If you're going to give options, make them consistent. If you've got a PS1/N64 option, have a SNES/Mega Drive option and a NES/Master System option, or else don't have any. Better yet, have the option and then challenge gauntleteers to be real men and do everything.

Yeah, I posted a revised NES list, but no one ever responded period. No good, no bad, nothin. If anyone wants I can re-post the altered list.

The games removed were Educational Games, Sports Games, Board/Gameshow Games, most Japanese Only Games(since hunting down translation patches is a bitch, and even finding some japanese ROMs can be tricky), and Absolute Shit Games(not subjective, I'm talking Wall Street Kid and Action 52).

Anyone interested?

I apologize for letting the Gauntlet die out. I was the one who was making the threads last time it was revived, but I got to Neo Geo and the damned emulator just wouldn't work, so I fell out, and it seemed nobody else picked it up. I'll try Neo Geo again to regain my honor. I was at Metal Slug.

This is all assuming my new laptop can handle the emulators for later consoles. If would lag when I tried SNES emulation, so I'm not sure if it'll run Neo Geo or 64-bit emulation at all.

Well, thats kinda the point. The more accessible the gauntlet is, the more people will play. Same reason I got rid of the Absolute Shit games, since they would just turn people off of the gauntlet.
I was hoping to make the list just games you could easily grab from a ROM set type torrent.
>>795636
It barely even qualifies as a simulator. It's always the exact same stocks that do well, so in the end it's just a matter of buying the selected stocks, and hoping the RNG gives you a win. At least Sim City or the other Sim games let you actually make choices, this crap just forces you to do the same thing every single in-game day.

These weren't really major cuts, as it is I'm re-numbering the list and Flying Dragon The Secret Scroll was 270, and now is just 201. Out of the first 270 games, I've only cut 69. I would be more in favor of a Best Of type list, but things get highly subjective at that point so it would just be a mess.

>> No.795706

>cutting the shit games

No, don't do that. On my first run I got LEGO Alpha Team for the Game Boy Color, and it was the shittiest shit game shovelware. But, being forced to play shit games, or even lose to shit games (I rerolled after level 16 was impossible), is part of the experience.

I've never tried Neo Geo, but I can second the N64 being removed. I love me some N64, but emulating is a pain in the ass with it. I recently played some Perfect Dark with a plugin that let me aim with the mouse, but there was still glitches and other issues that made me just give up.

>> No.795732

>>795706
But...that is the reason why the gauntlet keeps dying off in the first place. People sit down all excited to do some classic gaming, roll a shit game, get bored in 30 minutes or less, and drop out.

I'm not dropping games because they aren't great or even good, I'm dropping stuff that is either unplayable(Action 52), or absolute crap(Wall Street Kid). Just being OK or not that fun isn't reason enough for me to drop it, so I doubt there will be any shortage of shit games to play.

Why not add 'difficulty levels', and use both lists? If you want to try the Gauntlet, but don't want to wade through the shit, pick Easy Mode. If you want the classic Gauntlet experience, shit and all, pick Hard Mode.

I like your thinking, and wish to subscribe to your newsletter.

Multiple lists. Classic, which will be a list of the complete rom set. Standard, which will be a pruned list with all the garbage cut out. Easy, which will be a Greatest Hits list. That way people playing have a choice of complete random, random minus the crap, or some of the best the system has to offer.

Could also go with the current rules as well. Classic rules(the usual boilerplate), Hardcore rules(fail and you have to start over), Do or Die rules(you only have 4 hours, no RPGs), Relaxed rules(savestates are allowed for practice, but you need to be able to play from beginning to end without them to claim victory), and so on.

Heck, could even use RNG to pick which lists and rules you will be doing the Gauntlet under.

Got "The Uncanny X-Men" as my game.

"A sixth mission where the player battles Magneto can be accessed after the first five levels have been completed; to access the level the player must press Select, B, up on the control pad, and Start simultaneously on the game's level selection screen."

Why. Ok one more level and then I'll go to SNES. I'll definitely try this again with the other systems that the other guy posted.

I have a question, by the way. Would it count if I beat all the levels, but still got a game over? There is no saving in "The Uncanny X-Men", but there is a level select.

A few humorous things that occurred during my playthrough of this top-quality title include: having a wall close on Cyclops, but not ending his life, so he optic-blasted endlessly at surrounding enemies; getting the magnet, which freezes the character in place, and then having an enemy push me into instant death; getting to the boss and then not actually fighting him(going down the stairs gives you the diskette that he/she drops upon death); and not knowing what the hell the diskettes do.

Mainly played as my main peeps: Colossus and Iceman. Colossus has the most survivability while Iceman can run. Enemies often drop the E, which gives you full health, or the little circle, which makes you invincible.

Kinda wish I played this with a bro now. Just imagine.

Mega Slank, the first boss, kicked my ass once. After coming back with the full gun powerups, however, he was quickly disposed of. All I had to do was spam him with bullets and he died in a second or two.

Other note on this game, there are gun icons scattered around the stages, three in total. Each one collected increases your shot power. Having full power significantly reduces the irritation of playing this game.

And thus in saving Australia, the game was over...but wait! A much more heinous crime has emerged!

Who is Tetris Thread Guy? Am I Tetris Thread Guy? ;_; I haven't been here that long but I'll probably inherit the title soon enough

It would probably pay off to have a list of goals for games without concrete endings, though. Anons familiar with their game of choice could offer up good targets of varying difficulty.

In the spirit of the Tetris Guy call-out, let's use NES Tetris as an example:
I'm too young to die: finish a game of B-Type (25 lines)
Hey, not too rough: finish 100 lines in A-Type
Hurt me plenty: reach Level 19 (without just starting there, obviously)
Ultra-Violence: earn 600,000 points or something?
Nightmare!: reach Level 29 kill-screen (soft win)
Watch me die!: 999,999 point max-out (hard win of sorts) or Level 30 (just short of impossible)

Not really. it's not "hard" it just doesn't play fair. Like these little green midgets with the knives coming bounding up aren't an issue, since you just hop over them. They also keep the lobster men back, meaning you can hop your way to the end with no worries. But they don't always keep going that direction. Sometimes they'll turn around and be under you when you land.

And the only damage done is by the pixels on your feet, for only that one split-second of kick. This means that if they get too close you're basically fucked.

The second round is easier than the first in every way, with the boss having an actual easy pattern to work out, and not being a fat fuck who just flails around.

The third round is shit though, since there's these little old ladies that fire their tits at you that need two hits. Which is fine, except that the dudes bringing up the rear need to be killed (either by kick or card) meaning that second you turn around the old lady has recharged her tits and is shooting again.

And this wouldn't be so hard with the fucking volume of enemies.

Pretty much every level can be played by just hopping over the enemies, doing little kicks as you go. I spent the whole time going hop-kick-kick, hop-kick-kick. If I felt really daring I'd throw a flame card.

Even the bosses are beaten by playing dirty, with the pinnacle being me kicking a floored geriatric in the head.

The boss run put me down to my last life, but the last level and boss was so easy it didn't matter.

Sometimes it can be hard to place where that line is. For example, many would consider TMNT on the NES to be impossible, but I can testify that it is very beatable, and even somewhat easy once you figure out how to play it properly.

At the same time there are games like Battletoads, which some people claim to have beaten, but very few players actually manage to get past level 3, and those that do usually get stuck on Rat Race or Clinger Winger, or any of the other hard as balls "fuck you" levels. It could easily be considered impossible for the majority of gamers. It may not be actually impossible, but I wouldn't begrudge a re-roll for any poor bastard unlucky enough to get it.

So, this game reminds me a lot of Zelda in terms of combat, since it is in an overhead view and plays similarly to that. Though it is somewhat interesting, in that it combines multiple types of gameplay in this game (a horse riding section where you must jump over rocks, a two fight scene at the beginning), it can sometimes be easy to get a gameover, and you only have one continue per gameplay section... which is kind of ridiculous in certain section, since you can die quickly in certain sections, like the horse riding stage, and last longer in other sections, like the over head combat stages.

Apparently this game is based off of a movie, though I had never heard of it. Anyway, I will try to make another go of this game, but if it just gets tedious and silly, I probably just re-roll like a failure.

You are in for good fun. I've played that before. Protip: Once you reach the sewers, do some grinding. Level up off these easy enemies, and collect health items. With decent levels, the only parts that are somewhat tricky are the horse chase sequences and the swordfighting. Still, most swordfights are pretty easy if you can get a lower plane than the enemy. Started this today. The ball mechanic is actually interesting, but the game plays rather fast, so I just ran into enemies a bunch. They just sorta come outta nowhere if you go a little too fast, and on the first level, there are construction workers that throw wrenches at blindingly fast speed.

First boss was a dick American Football player. He met his fate with my furious balls.

By the way, if you've never played this, check out the story. A UFO came outta nowhere and decided to abduct the World Trophy, and before it got away from Earth, exploded by hitting an asteroid or something. Trophy broke into 6 pieces, and now some punk soccer playin' kid has to get them back.

I gave up on that. It's a puzzle game that's just impossible, and the translator even played 82 levels and never beat it, so what chance did I have?

I rerolled and got 'Rescue - The Embassy Mission' which was another NES game, and it wasn't too bad for its time. The individual modes needed some work, but the idea of moving a team of snipers into positition then picking off terrorists though the windows, then crashing through the windows and taking them out in a primitive first person view was pretty great. Sadly there's a lot of gameplay quirks that make each gameplay section so frustrating. During the walking you move far too slow for how fast some of the searchlights move, and the commando roll does nothing that I could see. The sniping is a waste of precious time unless there's someone in the window you're wanting t get into, and the repelling is annoyingly finicky.

You will be dangling from a rope, and you have to - and this took me ages to work out - press down, then up again right away. Pressing down (even a tap) makes you drop to your doom if you don't press up again right away, and the A button that makes you crash through the window LOOKS like the jump needed to rappel down.

And the first person sections are annoying on the hardest difficulty as the radar shows no enemy locations, and since they dart from room to room in a second you can - and I did - spend your whole time chasing one lone dude needed to complete the mission.

Really I liked it more for what it was trying to be. Not sure if there was many earlier "tactical" "shooters" like this.

Stuck on Stage 3. Can't really figure how to get past the second part of this stage. Tere's a bunch of enemies appearing from the right side, and those that go along the rails can now take several shots to kill, making it so the only thing you can do is avoid them completely.

So, I decided to watch the GCCX ep this out of curiosity. I immediately noticed Stage 6 is more difficult in the Japanese version, as you can't fall either side or else you get killed. Also, the ending they got in normal mode is way too different from mine.

Did they change it for the american release? The only thing I did different was not to use the Continue feature, but instead using the passwords I obtained, as those keep everything you have. Of course, doing this means you have to repeat the whole level instead of re-starting at the checkpoint.

After beating a fat sumo wrestler, the enemies in Japan join me in the stadium for a little run. How freakin' sweet of 'em.

Not much to report other than that, in America, which is either the second last or last country, they JUST warned me about coconuts falling from trees. Bloody nice of them I'd say.

If any of you are a fan of platformers, and wanna try somethin' different, this one's not too bad. As I said before, the ball mechanic is interesting enough. Gonna beat this tonight and then roll for the Gameboy.

>>811007
That worked for the first 3 enemies, but then there's a point where 2 of them come at the same time (not to mention having to do a tricky jump + gravity flip to get there and not be hit by the grey things). But managed to figure that last bit out. Thank you.

Considering it's my last day and I'm only at Stage 4, I'd say it's late already. Probably will fail this challenge. But I definitely liked this game, and am considering getting an actual cartridge in the future. Since famiclones are quite common in my country, I guess I should try to get the Japanese one, then.

So here's some interesting level design decisions.

Throughout this whole level the top and bottom wood beams moved to and away from each other making the level more narrow or more open as you progress.
There we also some points where a pole would stick out so it would block your way until the beams opened up. It was very clever and honestly the funnest level in the game so far.

In contrast the boss battle was the dumbest and easiest so far. All the boss did was move up and down the 'pipes' and launch a blast that was easily avoidable. There's a safe zone (see pic) which you can sit in the entirety of the fight and not gat hit once. You also got these ricochet beams right before the fight which made everything easier.

ah well.

Alright, finally starting. This game is based off a movie, apparently. The game is beautiful, and the music is amazing. It has fast drum beats, and what may be an organ. You start off in grasslands chasing some fucker who has lightning bolts and keeps destroying bridges, then instantly you are in a castle like area searching for a stone, and trying to murder some guy. It is difficult, but only if you don't know what the fuck you are doing. If you jump on the wrong ledge, there could be something to knock you off and send you back to the beginning of the game (you only get one life, unless you pick up an item that revives you at the start of the level). The game is actually really fun, and I cannot wait to return. ttyl ;)

I'm back, my friends! Hello, gauntleteers! I have time to play some more video games with you all, so now is my time to roll for my next challenge: the Sega Game Gear! I don't think the Game Gear is a very popular challenge that people partake on the gauntlet, and perhaps the Gameboy/Color is more common, so I decided to roll for the Game Gear for some added variety.

"Pac-Attack," huh? Alright! Let's give it a go.

Why does every platformer have to be so difficult? This is one of those kind of games where enemies come from the ground last minute to hit you to the ground, and continue hitting you. This is one of the those games where you get hit with splash damage by a raindrop. The levels are short, and it appears there are 6 levels, the next more difficult than the last. I hope I don't get another platformer after this.

I am at the half-way mark now. Some of these puzzles can be slightly confusing, but so far, not too bad. This game is similar to Tetris or Puyo Puyo in that it is a puzzle stacking game, but you use Pac-Man to eat the ghosts, while filling a row of the other blocks to have that row disappear. I will report later when I reach a difficulty or I finish the game.

Okay, I finally found out that the orb actually can activate some things, but what do I do in picture related? I tried hitting the lever with my orb, but it doesn't work no matter how many times I try. I cannot shoot it with my blue fireballs, because it is too high. The blue gem is supposed to make you jump higher, and it does, but there is no use button, and you cannot fire while you are floating from the gem. You can apparently flutter by tapping B quickly, but it is very limited. I tried jumping on top of the lever to shift it, but it doesn't work. I tried looking up a guide, but there were none, and there aren't even gameplay videos of this part. I came from the left side of the picture, from rocks you shoot off of the ceiling that you jump from sinking rock to sinking rock, and falling in the water kills you and sends you back to the fucking beginning of the game, so I cannot go that way. There are videos of people failing on the part RIGHT FUCKING BEFORE THIS PART(AND FUCK IF THAT AND THE MULTIBOSS BATTLES PREVIOUS THIS MAP WEREN'T THE WORST FUCKING THING TO EVER GRACE THE TITLE), but none with the part I am stuck on. Hoping someone else in this thread has found some solution to this previously, though I am not sure if I really want to know. I am afraid of what can be next, and I am not even halfway through with this game.

Argh! I am a little over 3/4 in terms of progress of this game, but these puzzles are becoming REALLY obnoxious. It almost seems like there is little to no solution to these puzzles, and are only completed depended on the type of block you get to finish the puzzle. You would think you would get specific blocks that would help you solve the puzzle, but only the first and sometimes the second blocks are always the same, but afterwards, it's a toss-up, and this toss-up can really throw a wrench into the puzzle and mess you up badly. I am going to continue to play this later, and let my head relieve itself of this game's treachery.

I also figure why now no one picks Game Gear to do their challenges... almost every Game Gear game is a downgrade of a game that is on the Sega Master System or Sega Mega Drive/Genesis. It's the small screen of the Game Gear that really annoys me, and seems to mess up the game in one way or another. I had this problem when playing Bubble Bobble on the Game Gear. The last boss played out much different than the last boss from either the NES version of the game or the Arcade version of the game.

Anyway, I will return to combat this game later. I will report any further progress I make later.

That's one of the reasons I voted to have all hand-held consoles removed from the gauntlet, since 9/10 times there is a superior version on another console, and the 1/10 times there isn't, it still involves playing with a damn small screen.

On that note, with the gauntlet being a bit more alive lately, are we going to bother trying to change anything about it, or are we still going to keep using the same lists?

>small screen
You can increase the size of the window, without obliterating quality with most emulators. Not by pressing the fullscreen option, but by stretching the window by pulling at the corners. One specific emulator that allows this is Visual Boy Advance, which can play all Gameboy consoles.

Alright, finally decided to try this out. It is similar to Megaman and maybe a little Metroid in gameplay mechanics, with interesting music (that gets repetitive quickly), and infinite "Continue?"s (which is honestly necessary considering that there is not health pickups). The graphics are actually pretty good, but they are too overwhelming for the emulator, and a large part of the time you cannot even see Batman or his batarangs due to its glitching. The levels are short, and of course tedious; the enemies are varied, and it is overall a pretty decent game.

Okay. I surrender. This here level 77 is pretty obnoxious and requires not wit, not skill, but luck to solve... what kind of puzzle game resorts to luck, and not intellect?!? Gah! I could eventually beat this game, but it just isn't worth it. Let me be the first to say I do not recommend Pac-Attack on the Sega Game Gear - play it on the Mega Drive/Genesis or Super Nintendo instead. The screen is too small for there to be a comfortable amount of room to play this game, since this game was not even designed originally to play on the game gear, and the puzzles give you random pieces that can make the puzzle very unlikely to complete. It is silly that anyone would design a puzzle game to be around luck. Oh well... I guess that ends this round of the gauntlet. Dead at the Game Gear. At least I can say that I have learned from this experience: just ignore the game gear, unless you happen to get a game gear exclusive. Otherwise, just do yourself a favor and Pick Gameboy/Color instead. Nintendo definitely refined hand-held gaming with the gameboy and managed to fix the whole screen size issue that Sega never seemed to have fixed properly.

I managed to have seized two medals on this gauntlet run. I wish I could have gone all the way through the gauntlet, but oh well. I guess I will have to restart at the NES, but I will later, since I have some other games I wish to attend to first.

>> No.832663

>>825451

I think hand-held consoles are great in the gauntlet, but what you say is true about the poor console ports that are on the hand-helds. I was thinking maybe having hand-held console exclusive games as well as DECENT ports. This way, we will be able to play games on the hand-held consoles that were actually meant to be played on the hand-held consoles. I figure that would maybe help solve some problems with people not choosing Game Gear.
