the whole DS line can do perfect GBA emulation thanks to GBArunner2, but N3DS is powerful enough to just run Retroarch, which will give you all the regular benefits of emulating like savestates and remapping. N3DS can also emulate PS1, but not Saturn or N64.

You don't need to downsample anything on either Vega 6 or RDNA 2 8cu gpu in rpcs3. GT 1030 which at best is half as performant as Deck's GPU can run all of PS3 games at 120% resolution scale.
You're not getting a lower battery life either because APU is 15w tdp max so stressing the gpu more will only mean that CPU will clock lower and overall performance would suffer.

Some Chinese company will make a knock-off of the Steam Deck. Here are the specs I expect on it.

>SD card slot
>mini-HDMI output
>micro-USB input
>AC input
>64gb internal memory (slow)
>Cheapest x86-64 mobile CPU possible that will boot Ubuntu
>2gb RAM (upgradeable)

GPU performance will be abysmal. Everything will be done on the CPU. Dreamcast emulation will be not that great.

Selling points

>upgrade to 4gb of RAM for an extra $30

>it really is legit a PC, can't argue with that!

I got the 351v because of the better screen, wood grain color, and built in wifi. After about a month, I'm enjoying it. I had to get quality micro sd cards to replace the shit ones that come with it and I use arkos firmware because it runs much better than standard. I used a guide from retro game corps. The only draw back is the mono speaker, but I hear it is better quality than the ones in the older models. Also it has one less analogue stick, but it doesn't run any systems that used or required two sticks. Games like ape escape can be rebound to work without the second stick.

As excited as I am for the Deck, there's one aspect about it that really concerns me....
The fixed 60hz refresh rate. I use G-Sync on my desktop and it's been a godsend for RetroArch and Mame as a fair amount of platforms don't run at a straight 50/60hz, especially arcade shit which can wildly vary. R-Type at 55hz, Mortal Kombat at 54hz, Donkey Kong at 60.61Hz, MS-DOS games running at 70hz and consoles like the NES & SNES which runs at 60.08hz in NTSC, just to name a few examples.
If this thing supported a 90hz FreeSync display out of the gate, it would already be the perfect emulation handheld I've been dreaming of for years now

Not even disabling v-sync helps? I got a Powkiddy X18 which should be on par or worse than that, but because v-sync was enabled and it had some weird 61hz refresh rate, it somehow caused an issue where even NES games ran super slow and were borderline unplayable. Least it was until I disabled it.

Like sometimes after charging itll say 0%, or it'll be 100 and then drop to 80% after 30 min of playing a GBC game. people online seem to just say if you think it works about 6hrs without needing charged then it is fine.

>> No.7973330

the terms firmware and operating systems has been blurred in more contemporary usage as devices become more powerful and complex. furthermore, firmware stopped referring to read only memory a long time ago because companies wanted the ability to fix things post launch so they made firmware reflashable. its not uncommon to see the the complete software for single purpose devices being referred to as "firmware". for example routers and switches that that run Linux or BSD often have their updates referred to as firmware. all modern Intel processors are running MINIX 3 as part of the IME. heck, UEFI is debatably getting close to an operating system in itself these days. for a single purpose devices like an emulation handheld calling the OS "firmware" is not out of line with how the word is currently used. complain if you like about the dilution of the term but the creators of those videos are not really to blame for the change in definition. i am far more offended how people often call reinstallable android distributions "Roms" as its an oxymoron. at least operating systems can load firmware and firmware can be an OS so the terms not strictly contradictory.

it still has use to refer to the behind the scenes software that makes hardware work. for example the internal software that makes a GPU work is clearly firmware. i do still think it is more correct to call the general software on handheld emulation devices devices an operating system but i understand why someone may use the term firmware.
here is a quick and dirty (but incomplete) way of distinguishing them:
firmware=the behind the scenes code that lets the hardware do its job but is not normally directly interacted with by the user.
operating system=the software environment that sits on top of the hardware where the user interacts can run programs.
driver=software that allows the operating system to talk to and control advanced pieces of hardware.

Thoughts on the HP Pro Tablet 608 G1?

It's an 8" 4:3 tablet with a resolution of 2048x1536 and it can run Windows 10 and presumably some kind of Linux.
I think it would pair well with a controller attachment.

If you want to simulate a screen size on your monitor you can go to this site:

https://www.displaywars.com/

And input the screen size of your monitor and the thing you want to simulate.
Then you save the image and resize it to the resolution of your monitor then display it full-screen.

Make sure to not use the chinks microSD cards as they are trash and will cause your games to freeze apparently. There is an annoying light in the middle of it under the home button that can't be turned off but it's nothing that a little tape won't fix. I think if you did that and installed Linux on the tablet you could run Retroarch with very little background overhead, and probably get runahead going on less demanding emulators. From there the only significant source of lag should be the tablet LCD itself, which ought to be pretty low.

The anbernic rg351 is perfect for GBA because it has the same aspect ratio as GBA, and integer scales perfectly. Unfortunately, its a bit of a trade off because most consoles are 4:3 and this results in some squashed pixels (which can be somewhat alleviated with RGA scaling) and black bars. As far as I understand, it scales neo geo and genesis really well too. I think they did this because PSP has a 16:9 screen, so the GBA aspect ratio allows PSP to be emulated with less letterboxing.

The biggest selling point for me though is that it has an aluminum body variant. I ordered one off a week ago and I'm excited for it

There's also an LCD shader included with the default OS that gives GBA games the look of the original lower-resolution display. Some people like it, so if you find it and like it, back it up, because the LCD shaders included with the custom firmware aren't quite the same. It's probably an older version of one that runs better, now that I'm thinking about it.

I got my hands on a Dsi XL in incredibly quality for 60$ and it turns out it can emulate a ton of stuff. I was already really happy with my purchase but it turns out it can actually play way more than I thought it could.
Anyone else own a DSi XL?

I dont know. Advance Wars really has like 1 way to beat a lot of the missions down to moving specific units to specific tiles every time. Even in an old JRPG you can usually have some valid options for how to attack.

I had a phat DS with an r4 kart as a kid, which is actually something that familiarized me with using emulators. SNES was really shit on it back then and I don't imagine it's any better now, but if you had the ram expansion neo Geo was actually really good, albeit squished. I hacked my 3ds too, which is a great emulation machine, but not really an ideal design for retro games imo. Most consoles have scaling issues, you have a blank screen and the dpad placement kinda sucks

Ehhh... They're pretty cheap so it's not really the worst thing in the world, but still pretty tistic. A lot of YouTubers have multiple emulation handhelds though they get views making videos about them.

So, I'm back from testing SNES games on the DSi XL. The games themselves? Pretty fine, no real issues. Tested F-zero and NBA Jam. Mario Kart wouldn't run but I assume I did something wrong there. The issue is, there's some funky graphical bugs. I'm sure if I fuck with it I can fix it but it's pretty late but it's nice to see the games are actually playable. I'm sure the visual bugs are fixable.

I remember the performance wasn't terrible, but the visual glitches and sound being pretty bad. Give Chrono trigger a try, I remember it has some terrible grating sound emulation lol. Not like it's a big deal, there's a DS port.

I'm considering buying a retroid2, because the idea of being able to play the games of my childhood from the comfort of my bed appeals to me. I have one doubt, though. I have no computer skills whatsoever, so I have no idea how to set these things up. My question is, can I unwrap the retroid from the box and start playing it right away or do I need to mess around with the options and settings?

>> No.7985709

You need to mess with firmware and settings to get the most out of it, Ambernic devices are easier to det up and you have some good online guides

so do any of these chink machines have speed up buttons? a few years ago i tried emulating on my psp but didn't see a way to speed up the game, so i've just stuck to emulating on my pc.

If you were a man with a family of your own you would know that you can't always monopolize the TV, especially for videogames. With a handheld you can let your wife and kids watch their shows or cartoons and you get to game right there next to them.

the right analogue stick is also useful if you want to play arcade games in tate mode. it kinda feels like shit to control but it's a cool novelty.

Yep, I can confirm that you can have keybindings to a lot of retroarch functions in the RG351 devices, including speed up (and it has some nice defaults pre-configured in most firmwares)
Can't say anything about other devices

Also for playing Diablo (works as the mouse in the menus, in DevilutionX).

So I got my r351v in today, this thing is pretty neat. Though some of the shortcut commands suck. I can probably change those inside the retroarch menu. I haven't installed the better SD cards I bought for this thing, or installed any custom firmware yet.
Right now I'm more curious about the two USB-C ports on the bottom, does it matter which one I use to recharge it?

>> No.7988219

Are they labeled? On my 351p, one is used for charging or USB input, and the other is just for USB input.

They are, one is OTG and the other port is DC/OTG. So I guess OTG is just for data transfer, whereas the DC/OTG is for charging or data transfar
That's a little weird. But at least it means I could theoretically hook this up to my computer to transfer shit without charging the battery.

>> No.7988234

>>7988223
That's how mine is. I'm not sure about the V, but the OTG ports on mine don't allow data access - you can either take the SD card in or out, or use FTP. There's a tutorial for setting up FTP pretty easily out there if you Google.

I'll just stick with transferring crap through SD cards, I got the readers for it. At least now I know.

No problem.
As an added tip, to change your shortcut commands inside the emulator, open up the RetroArch menu and go to settings>input settings>hotkeys, or something pretty similar to that. I changed bringing up the menu to L3+R3 on the 351p, but something like the L+R+Start+Select option might be better for the V since it doesn't have a second stick.

Please guide me /vr/os. Is an RG351p worth it if I already have a GBA with an EZ Flash, a hacked 2DS and Vita?
The idea of having everything I emulate there in just one machine sounds tempting but not sure if it's really worth the money.

Now I've heard of this revision which seems to have a better screen suited for more games. I don't really miss the second analogue because not too many PS1 games use it anyway.
