I had the PC version of Wipeout 2097. Great Soundtrack and it still handles great. Found the learning curve pretty steep, but it's very rewarding once you get the hang of it. And the more you play it, the better you get at it. I thought it was really well balanced. Haven't played any others in the series.

Playstation is has brighter lighting where as PC has that 90s gamma fuckery that makes everything way too dark. Playstation has the full licensed soundtrack and PC has Cold Storage (subjective). PC also supports keyboard, mouse, and joystick. Forgot if it officially supports DirectInput but I definitely remapped my Xbox One controller as such. PC has limited resolutions in the launcher (there's a hacked launcher somewhere) and driver MSAA works. There's also a netplay exe out there somewhere. I believe textures and sounds are identical except ship shadows do look weird as it's a weird opaque gray instead of black overlay.

I just unlisted my old capture test from 2016 for your curiosity:

The game is more combat focused so the pace is usually slower (except in zone mode). They bought back the character selection from the first game, but the stats doesn't matter much yet the team specific weapons break the balance when introduced. The tracks have multiple courses like in ridge racer, but the overall design leaves a lot to be desired. The camera doesn't follow the track smoothly as in the previous entries, fusion was the only wipeout that made me feel nauseous. It is definitely the low point of the series in my opinion, the devs tried to go in a different direction and it didn't work out.

Indeed, the difficulty curve is all kinds of fucked in 2097. It makes the player get used to the higher speeds on the most bullshit difficult courses. I prefer single races to tournaments with consecutive races and points so 3 was great in that regard.

You can use a cheat code to unlock all the courses for all difficulty modes. It was dumb to not have it that way by default.

In Fusion, the ships don't bob and float in the air much, if at all. I remember it feeling like they were magnet-gripping the tracks, so more like F-Zero. IMO the coolest thing about PS1 Wipeout was the "carving the air" feeling of the physics, so Fusion was a big letdown.

But I did like some of the track variety ideas they had, like the open-ish "field" sections with boulders and such to avoid. Episode 1 Pod Racer did it better though.

I think it's MUCH harder to get gold medals in Wipeout 64 than the others. You have to fly perfect laps or near-perfect laps with consistency. I kind of like it though, it gives it a little spice to set it apart from the others.

IMO difficulty wise (getting golds against the AI on fastest speeds) I would say XL < 1 = 3 < 64. And I'm not hating on XL, I'm just saying it's not too hard to win on Phantom with a little practice. 1 has some ballbuster tracks like Silverstream, and the collision is quite unforgiving, but I thought 3 was a little rougher overall since you have to race with every ship on every speed class to unlock everything. 3 was also my first Wipeout though so maybe it's because I had to learn the ropes on that one.

>> No.7987269

No lie, 3 can be a grind. When I feel the urge to replay it on emulator, I load a savestate with the all tracks/speed classes cheat enabled.
