7945495 No.7945495 [Reply] [Original]

July 24 will be the one year anniversary of the massive Gigaleak that turned so many things Nintendo fans thought they knew about SNES history upside down.

With all the fans out there with deep pockets--or at least fans with loose pockets who would gladly donate to such a cause--why on earth hasn't anyone tracked down one of the computers, workstations, or whatever Nintendo used back then, bought it, and compiled the early LttP code that was in the leak?

>> No.7945527

>>7945495
i personally enjoyed the gameboy lotcheck much more than the snes and n64 proto stuff, seeing prototype localizations that we never received and even games we thought were 100% lost like pokemon picross was incredible

>> No.7945551

>>7945495
No news? It would be nice if we received another set of files. Spaceworld Pokemon was the best, I was there for the original Unown-Hiroshima thread, bless these anons.

>> No.7945836

Man, it's been a year already?
I remember checking these threads obsessively. It was way better than just a random proto being found, having access to the actual development files and folders is crazy
What's even crazier is that stuff like Koizumi? talking about testing 3D games with the FX before going on OOT and we actually found the freaking models for that. How crazy is that?
Also, does someone have the Costanza shitpost made with these models?

>> No.7945841

>>7945527
Yeah same. Though the Game Boy family is more my bread and butter anyways.

What was the oldest file in the gigaleak? I know some date from the late 80's.

I think the oldest stuff is related to Dragonfly for SNES, the early prototype of Pilotwings. This is from February 28 1989. It's also unedited lol.

I remember those (the models, not the shitpost). They looks jank as fuck, of course, but it's fun to see where these people got their start making 3D models.

>> No.7945974

>>7945965
Well yeah, they were meant to test 3D combat with the FX chip, so basically they weren't even meant as a concrete project, just the possible beginnings of one
But this test has basically layed out the foundation of OOT when he later joined the project IIRC
How crazy is that?

>> No.7945987

>>7945974
Pretty crazy. This type of content is my favourite. Seeing cut/early content really humanizes the developers. Every cut content thread there's some anon that's like "I don't care about shit that was cut because it was cut for being bad". They don't understand that it's not interesting because you wish green stickman Link was playable, it's interesting to be able to see the strings being pulled behind the scenes, how development progressed, etc. and speculate over what it might mean.

>> No.7945992

>>7945836
>having access to the actual development files and folders is crazy
I STILL have to pinch myself and remind myself I didn't dream saving a whole directory of Nintendo development folders to my desktop, with the person folders of developers whose names I can then recognize in the credits of some of my favorite games, where the files are dated back to the SNES era. And development tools! Actual tools they used in-house to create graphics! It's like holy hell, man, did we luck out or what? And it hurts when you realize it may never happen again and we never get answer to some of the biggest mysteries (e.g. Super Donkey).

I don't know if anyone has a legit list, but I can list what I remember
- Two Yoshi's Island prototypes, most of the levels are not even complete and have rough drafts of what the gimmicks will be. Originally was a wizard baby instead of baby Mario
- Yoshi Island Alpha called "Donkey"
- Mario 64 assets and part of the source codes. We got the missing numbered levels in the game's debug level select with ressources, they're all test stages. We got Luigi, it was glorious. A scrapped enemy was restored from the code
- OOT assets and parts of the source. Some old proto enemies were found and restored. Found out that the Ikana Well and Spider House in MM was supposed to be in Ura Zelda. Unused boss rush. Unused SGI renders along with HQ versions of all of them. We also got the untextured (was probably also going to use a SGI render) of the old strange assumed to be temple of time picture that floated around. Found SGI of a early really small temple of time. We also have HQ renders of the manual stuff
- HQ renders of cart template, full picture of Star Fox 64 cart art (was previously never found) and such random assets
cont.

- Star Fox 64 uncompressed voice clips
- Full source of Dr.Mario 64 including a scrapped Japanese version
- Some random Animal Crossing stuff, very little research made?
- Full Wario Land 4 source I believe, unsure
- A crazy amount of development sprites for Super Mario World, maps, different Yoshi designs, Grandpa Yoshi, unused enemies, one being a walking canon that was reused in yoshi's island
- Also a crazy amount of ALTTP ressources. A deku tree looking tree, old maps
- I believe we have the full "git" (I forgot the old versioning software they used) repo of Starfox 2 including weird utilities
- Weird utilities like spriting utilities, a tool to make scrapped yoshi island sprites and the likes
- NES roms of some unreleased games I heard, like the full version of an Hockey Sim? In full English
- GB lotcheck, includes lost unreleased and unannounced localizations, Pokémon Picross. Tomato's Adventure GBC
- A shitload of Pokemon source code, nearly all of them, some even having all of the repo intact
- Broken repo? of Link's Awakening or just lots of different roms
- SGI test that turned into Mario Kart 64
- Mario Kart protos and alpha before it became Mario Kart
- Pilotwing Alpha assets (Dragonfly was it called?)
And many, many more stuff that I forget at this point

Unrelated, but recently some OOT beta assets were found in the overdump of a F-Zero proto

The implication given the presence of Mario and Donkey Kong sprites in it seemed to be that it was a prequel perhaps themed around Mario and Donkey Kong, though this is just speculation based on assets in the ROM and the name Super Donkey. Jigglypuff was introduced as a regular character in the anime just a couple of months before Yellow version released. Given that the anime also did a Pokemon Snap tie-in episode a couple of episodes after Puff was introduced (although Pokemon Snap was horribly delayed), it's likely Jigglypuff was introduced into the anime specifically to promote Pink Version. But the game was scrapped after those episodes were already in production.

Yeah, for prototypes in general, it is really neat to see a game that you're used to seeing as a fully polished retail product during a state when it was still buggy and had placeholders etc. Sure, nowadays it is common to see messy, unfinished games, or even see shitty broken old games, but seeing a grade-B or grade-A title when it still had glitches right out in the open or when they were still experimenting with designs and layouts and whatnot really makes the game feel like a man-made product as opposed to the sanitized version you're used to.

Sadly it might not really be worth it for them. I think he means that Nintendo might be worried that some of their unused concepts might get aped by other developers or wannabe (i.e. indie) developers. That might be a gray area as far as copyright is concerned, I don't know. Either way, I'm sure Nintendo themselves sometimes peruse unused assets and concepts from their old games for inspiration. SMW's Yoshi literally came from an unused idea that had been around since the original SMB.

Nintendo is infamous for being assholes at times about things, It comes off as cold and regressive. The official story on how OoT or Super Metroid were made, as an open discussion, are long-overdue. Not just "oho, i was in a park in Kyoto one day and saw children cutting dandelions with sticks and that why you cut grass in ALttP". A lot of devs use assets from other games as placeholders during development, for instance Blood, which used some of the monster from Doom. In Japan, there's a dedicated Nintendo museum of game archives they had.

However, you need to get accredited access from Nintendo. It's in a storage room with an AC maintaining about 23C to 24C of room temperature. One light in the corner is blinking, probably close to end of life and needs replacing.

The vault also contains some metal cabinets with files and documents, consisting of drafts and reports on what parts of the games need to be changed. They're stored pretty well, with hardly any creases found on the papers except in the corners.

You can go visit the vault during the weekdays at 9AM to 11AM and 2PM to 4PM Japan Time.

The argument against most of it having already been released is the randomness of this. Like, why those couple of random Yoshi's Island builds? You'd have thought there's either have been a whole lot more, like the full dev archive, or less (like maybe one or two release candidates). Instead it seems to be one random mid-development build, given the timing likely one of the last "rough sketch" builds before they started seriously nailing down the gameplay and level designs. Plus there are screenshots out there from a cartridge which has a slightly earlier build, so you would've thought that build, which was apparently put to a proto cart and sent out in some capacity, maybe to a foreign Nintendo branch, would've been in their internal tape archive.
>>7970034
Yeah, but I am sure Nintendo legal would want to review over things to make absolutely sure that nothing like the Capcom thing would happen. And given the age of some of the assets, they'd probably determine it would be too tricky to evaluate and probably not generate enough money for the effort.

apparently having a contrary opinion to the circle jerk isnt allowed. this is considered "trolling" apparently? i dont get it. my genuine answer to the question is that there arent enough people actually interested in this sort of stuff, and even for people that are interested in this stuff, its not really WORTH anything. its not a grand relic or feat. theres no real return for investment. all its really going to do is make a few people go "huh, neat" and maybe trifle fewer get excited. it wont have any grand meaning to that moment in history. it wont be any particularly interesting or relevant insight into anything special. thats why. there, i worded it nicer.

Sorry, but you still come off sounding liking a prick because you're on a retro video game board saying that one of the most critically acclaimed retro games of all time doesn't mean anything. LttP means a great deal to a lot of gamers and since any insights into its history *such as a playable early version with a different map and different gameplay features* would be interesting to said gamers, well, how is that not a grand relic?

because most people that value a lttp value a lttp, not a rough draft. similarly to how most gamers dont mod their games, they like and value the original. while some people are huge disney fans, owning an original animation cel isnt that big of a deal to most of them beyond "neat, i own it". hell, even a cel from some confirmed, unreleased short isnt that big of a deal. if they suddenly found an unreleased short in the disney vault, of course the most emotional fans would foam at the mouth, but even they would left with nothing after having watched it. "well that was neat i guess". unless the content was something that gave a strange new insight into disney himself, it wouldnt really MEAN anything to animation or disney as a whole. a rough draft of a lttp doesnt really offer anything to the understanding of game development as a whole that we didnt already know. what is anyone going to gain from it? a little blurb in a "did you know gaming" video? like confirm something like "did you know? octoroks were some of the first enemies added in the game's development", ok and? neat. it just doesnt mean much in the bigger picture.

yes, you guys have a cute hobby, but the return on investment is trivial and "historical value" and meaning isnt as big as you think it is, and your hobby isnt as popular as you think it is.

>> No.7976183 [DELETED]

>>7976170
thats not what i said. i said thats why people havent spent money on it. the hobby isnt as popular as you think it is (less people that might HAVE that sort of disposable income), and even then, the return on investment is minimal. you guys can absolutely TALK about it, but i was answering the question as to why nobody has spent money as OP asked about.

>> No.7976186 [DELETED]

>>7976183
That's exactly what you said. You said that in every single one of your posts. That no one is allowed to even talk about it because it's nothing more than a curiosity. All anyone's ever allowed to say about it "huh, neat."

I mean koizumi is nintendos mvp. This guy made the majoras mask story and subplots and was probably the reason for even more stuff during oot and shit. I mean he was so good that miyamoto that retard gave him mario instead of zelda. But koizumi wants to tell storys instead of making jump and runs. Directed 3d worlds and then never again because muh story bad.
Well he is now on the path to becoming the next ceo.
Still just one zelda game man. Even 2d, just one.

if thats all you got out of it, then you suck at reading comprehension. obviously the turbo-autists will sperg out and coom to every single thing there and missing/different from the final version with all manner of variations of "oh wow look at that!" "check THIS out!" and all that. no shit. but that all boils down to "huh, neat. wow." how loudly or repeatedly any individual says it is irrelevant. i dont have to write out a whole script for you, i simplified the core essence of the point.

i have never once said or implied that nobody can talk about it, or that they wouldnt talk about even if money was spent. what i've said is that your population is small, so the chance of finding someone with that kind of money is less than you realize, as well as the actual worth of the investment is less than you think it is. all you get is a cute moment with your buddies. its not the landmark in humanity you're making it out to be. its not a precious relic for history. while a handful of you guy might feel that way, the reality is that it isnt, and the return on that kind of investment is smaller than you think it is. that was my answer to OP's question of why people havent spent money on it. nowhere in there did say or imply that nobody can talk about it. its that kind of kneejerk reaction that flags a contrary opinion as "trolling" and some janny deletes posts for no reason. is this not a discussion board? is this not 4chan? get over yourself.

A lot of concept art is developed with the intention of pushing the limit. Rather than the developers unintentionally censoring themselves by playing it safe, they'll leave it up to the publisher on where to draw the line. Stuff like Crucified Boo can used as a negotiating chip with the publisher later on. If another aspect of the game is controversial (but not as controversial as Crucified Boo), you can "comprimise" and cut Boo. Warren Spector has talked about this in regards to Epic Mickey. They created concept art that they knew Disney wouldn't approve, but it ultimately gave them greater freedom than self censoring.
