I completely skipped Gen II. My first exposure to it was with HeartGold and SoulSilver. A lot of stuff that Gold & Silver did had little effect on me since it felt like I would have had to play the games back when they were brand new for those things to have any effect on me.

But that simple, "Do you know what you just did?" moment was pretty fucking awesome.

When I played this game for the first time, I didn't know you could go to Kanto and it blew my 12 year old mind. Game Freak has never topped G/S/C.

Kanto's direction in GSC was a mess. The Gym Leaders are only slightly above Johto's strongest, then Red is over 20 levels above the last gym leader in Johto but his area has a bunch of under-leveled mons. They should've committed to either a complete reset where you leave your old monsters over a certain level behind or increase the challenge by making everything in Kanto high levels.

The problem isn’t even that Kanto is unfinished, it’s a decent amount of extra content. It’s that it’s mismanaged. I’m fine with the amount of content the problem is level distribution

the only one I know of is Zelda Majora Mask.
They both had some time based events that you could only get a certain day and you could repeat them.

This was insane before 2000 and made these games feel literally alive.

Like one day Lapras can be gotten, another day you can get special items etc. And night and day cycle, sure this was seen in dragon quest and other games before but the gameplay was much affected in Gen 2.

I never played any pokemon games after gen 2 because I knew it could not be topped, this was and still is the apex. They added too many gay pokemon and gay rivals, gary and silver is where it was at.

Problem is johto was gimped with small dungeons and routes and little of interest . It’s still criminal that gamefreak didn’t expand Hoenn more, the Seville islands were a step in the right direction( should’ve just been surfable though), regions have been boring since Gen 5.

My only experience with Gold/Silver was during the late90s when a friend downloaded some gameboy emulator and a japanese rom. I got to I think the 2nd gym before I stopped playing. I haven't played a pokemon game since.

Playing crystal recently and i have to agree Johto kinda sucks. I remember it being this amazing adventure and fuck it's pretty bad on a replay 20 years later. The game is easy as fuck and my team is pretty consistently 10 levels higher than the gym leaders. and everyone uses kanto pokemon and i've mostly only seen kanto pokemon in the wild.

The one thing about Pokémon distribution I’ll give credit to is that it makes a lot of overlooked Kanto Pokémon usable early on.

I liked Kanto, even though I was slightly disappointed in it. Honestly, I was just glad to get to go back. For what it's worth, I'm one of those dense motherfuckers who thought OOT was going to end once you got the 3 Spiritual Stones.

This. The worst parts of johto is the distribution of kanto to johto mons and the fucked leveling curve because they had to balance the game between you going to two regions. Even the fucking gym leaders and E4 barely use johto mons.

Should they have gone the original route of the mini Kanto from the beta then? Does the beta of Gold have more Johto?
From what I understood from interviews the only reason kanto was expanded was because of Iwata, so it doesn't appear like Johto was ever going to be bigger despite not including Kanto.
