in map07 you can rocket jump against one of the mancubi to clear the gap to the exit switch. it's a horizontal speed boost rather than a vertical jump.

when talking about vanilla the term "jump" usually refers to "run, or be propelled, quickly over a gap". for example "strafejump" means "use straferunning to cross a larger gap than you could cross with normal running".

Fractal Doom has received an update!

--Minimarines can now pick up mini clips, shotguns and chainguns dropped by the respective fractal monsters and use them. They will seek out such pickups and pick them up, rather than randomly walking over them. Each items gives them a limited amount of ammo, after which they will switch back to using their fists (though they also use their fists if they happen to be close to a monster they want to attack.) They also use sprites which reflect which weapon they are using/last used as an indicator to the player.

--Minimarines no longer occasionally "hang" and punch the air aimlessly. They also act more intelligently, and will break off from pursuing targets they cannot reach (though they can still get stuck in the rare case where a monster is the last monster alive in a large portion of the map.)

--If the player dies while using the fist altfire to throw marines, whether due to the altfire's health cost or other damage, the player will drop a single minimarine if they died before being able to throw their marine.

--The fist altfire's 30 health cost will now correctly bypass armor.

--The shootable imps and rockets with revenants riding them now check if they are "dead" due to the player shooting them every tic.

--The largest/vanilla sized demons are now resurrectable by archviles.

--The Revenants and MiniRevenants dropped by their respective rockets no longer "disappear" for a second when the rocket explodes.

--The Spider Mastermind now has an alternate death state which triggers if it was killed by a BFG.

--Most smaller fractal monsters are now pushable.

Crappy weapon selection outside of the Crossbow and Phoenix Rod.

Enemies were way too beefy as well. Made a lot of fights not fun unless you had a lot of Time bombs.

There isn't that many mods for Heretic that is quality.

I can't even stand the weapon set, and only went through Heretic with Samsara as Doomguy.

>>802192
I disagree! I end up using all of the weapons, each with their own convenience. I absolutely love their chainsaw equivalent, and even their starting weapon is extremely useful. Every weapon uses different ammunition, which is also grand when the ammo seems so plentiful yet you use them up so quickly.

The enemies are large, but are pretty easy to kill. When they trap you in a corner though, panic .

I haven't tried the modifications yet, but the campaign is pleasing for my tastes!

I think you should reconsider playing the game with the original weapons set.

Actually, Heretic modding has a much better hit-to-shit ratio since most people start with Doom modding and only move to Heretic once they're fairly experienced with the engine. Try Shooting Monsters with Guns, Order and Chaos, or Style Mod for Heretic.

The /pol/ map has been updated!

It is probably complete now, unless there are other bugs that pop up in the future (still gotta put a credits txt in there, though.)

--ALL custom monsters now feature custom sounds, not just Shrek.
--Fixed issue with some monsters clumping together when using zandronum.
--Intermission screen now correctly displays map and author name in zandronum.
--Decorate code, sound info and other lumps are now consolidated to make it easier to merge with future board wads.
--Custom textures, custom sounds, and custom sprites are now organized to make it easier to merge with future board wads.
--All sprite names containing "POL#" have been changed so they do not share sprite names with decoration items in doom2.wad, to make it easier to merge with future board wads.
--For those that missed the last update (which was a while ago), a teleporter for those respawning in the starting area after the end fight has started was added so players don't get stuck there, and the pillars that contain the bfg and exit were altered so that they obviously stand out.

Just a quick update, the NES emulator included in the torrent will not have a UI for some reason. It may be because it is one of those "unpack where you play" kind of programs. That said, I unpacked the files into my downloads section, later moved the unpacked files, and did not replace the files with the .zip it came in because I didn't know.

THE BELOW PARAGRAPH CAN theoretically(as in, I haven't tried it) BE FIXED BY THIS HERE INSTRUCTION!
http://forums.emulator-zone.com/showthread.php?t=15849

Additionally, it may ask you to create folders within a user folder you don't even have(but you can just as easily select no multiple times and it will start up), so it may not even be usable(or it may just not save/additional items). This said, the below information MAY NOT EVEN WORK(excluding the redownloading of Nestopia from the host website of course).

If you are uninterested in playing the only game included for the NES in the torrent, this probably doesn't apply to you(since both the game and emulator are so small). If it does concern you, please re-download the files from this website.
http://nestopia.sourceforge.net/
this doesn't mean delete the .zip the files came in from the torrent

ALTERNATIVELY: You could simply drag and drop the .nes file on top of the Nestopia.exe file.

ANOTHER ALTERNATIVE: You could also make the file run by setting the default program to run the file to Nestopia.exe by right clicking the .nes file, selecting properties, selecting the "change" button next to "opens with", and selecting Nestopia.exe. This will allow you to simply double click on the .nes file, and it will auto open with Nestopia.

Also, there is a reason I chose Nestopia. It seems the other emulators don't quite play the game graphically proper(probably because it is a Famicom game).

several years at least.

it's very easy to learn to make a *bad* map. it's easy to make a maze of corridors and disjoint rooms that are all so separate from each other that they may as well be different maps.

and it's especially easy to overdetail these small areas and use hundreds of custom textures so the thing looks "modern" and people drool over the screenshots and call you the messiah of mapping.

the easy way to map is to do a room at a time, without considering how the map as a whole fits together.

it's very difficult to learn how to make a good layout. where the map is one cohesive whole, and doesn't feel like a bunch of completely disconnected parts.

it's even more difficult to learn how to make a map with a good layout and balance it properly so the start, when you have no weapons and all the monsters are alive, isn't horribly difficult, but as you go through, becomes trivially easy as you clear out all the monsters and get the big weapons.

in summary: as with many things, mapping is easy to start, but incredibly difficult to master, and few have done so.

I watched the tutorials on the doombuilder website and extensively used the zdoom wiki or googled "doombuilder/zdoom thing_I_want_to_do" and learned how from the results. There are a lot of forum posts explaining how most things you'd want to do can be done. I was in the process of making a Doom map,but I gave up when I couldn't manage to get a door to open after the death of a Mancubus.

It was basically three individual paths that gave you a different weapon at the beginning and then put you up to an obstacle course of sorts, with several rooms each. You couldn't backtrack once you had gotten to said path, so it kind of forced replays to get the most out of it. In hindsight, I don't think it would have been very well-liked.

Like an earlier anon said, it's nice to come back to the same thread, and not have to go to a new one due to tons of posting... Which usually means there's some shitposting.

And sometime we should play TLMS Internal Conflict.

Why is Episode 4: Thy Flesh Consumed so difficult? I'm playing on Hurt Me Plenty and I must have died over 50 times on the first level. Finally beat the first level last night, level 2 is insane! Why so many Barons of Hell???

Hangman is a wall with each letter of the alphabet on it. You select one letter and if it's correct, there are several blank spots on the wall that'll fill with letters. I mean, it's hangman, it's not terribly complex.

The big difference is that if you fuck up too many times you're sucked into space and explode. If you get the word before any of the other teams, you're allowed to run into a sealed room, arm yourself, and kill the other players.

CAH was good like RTC-3057 because they instilled a sense of wonder where the plot is going to next, and what kind of unsettling or hidden truths you can uncover.

I do Chocolate Doom for vanilla levels, prBoom+ for limit-removing levels, ZDoom for ZDoom levels, and ZDaemon and (formerly) Skulltag for multiplayer. Haven't tried Zandronum yet. DOOM was about a year of my life, uh, a couple years ago, and then I got burned out. Gonna try to rekindle the flame today.

That's good to hear.

>I play with no x-axis mouselook, crosshairs, jumping, crouching, and no opengl while playing fractal doom

When I refer to "mouselook", I mean only the vertical aspect. *Turning* is absolutely fine, and a mouse is essential for turning (and shooting, and opening) to play at the fullest. I use WASD for movement since nothing goes better with a mouse.

I'll look up this Fractal Doom thing.

First time in this board. It seems swell. The only thing I don't like is the dissociation of "retro", since videogames are videogames in any era and I abhor nostalgia because it clouds judgment, but if that's the distinction that drives away the /v/ shitposters then... great!

Do we do demo runs? I love picking PWADs and competing for time across each level. It's fun to find ways to shave off seconds, and I think DOOM really shines when you *don't* kill all the monsters, since it is never required unlike most modern FPS games. DOOM is ultimately about exploring the level until there is no more to explore, and once you've done that, it's about getting to the exit as swiftly and efficiently as possible.

Look, I'm sorry. I don't like modernized DOOM. I don't like the hypocrisy of people dissing legitimately great (in vastly different respects) modern FPS games such as CoD4... and then they turn around and play DOOM as much like those modern FPS games as they can.

DOOM is great precisely for all the reasons it is unlike modern FPS games, and those reasons extend to and fundamentally encompass the controls. There is no crosshair because your weapon is centered and aiming is unimportant. Aiming is unimportant because DOOM emphasizes mobility over pointer-precision. OpenGL is hideous because DOOM's palette restrictions and texture resolution don't lend well to modern rendering, and the concept of freelook when confronting 2D sprites is asinine. Look over or under them, and you see cardboard cutouts.

I like playing DOOM the way it was made, and I like discussing DOOM with people who play the same game I do. People who play GZDoom with drastic modifications for levels which weren't designed for them (see: Brutal Doom) are not playing the same game I am, so there's not much point in discussion with them.

>> No.811727

It's not narrow at all. I play damn near every decent WAD I can, and I play them as the authors designed them to be played. Vanilla engine for vanilla levels, basic limit-removing engine for limit-removing levels, ZDoom for ZDoom levels, and so on. I seek airtight holistic experiences when I play DOOM, and no other game offers that sort of experience with mods like DOOM does.

When you play Brutal Doom or any other weapon/gameplay mod with levels that weren't designed for them, you're no longer having a holistic experience. You're having a gimmicky, amusing distraction at best. That's fine, but it should be by no means the basis of all discussion when we're intending to talk about DOOM.

I like Zen Dynamics because it is complete, and because the levels and enemies are included and designed expressly for the modified mechanics and weapons. Every modification should be made with a holistic experience in mind.

>>811720

Oh, right, I was referring to game-wise, not the actual movement of the mouse, When you move your mouse up or down it is on the Y-axis, but the GAME'S Y-axis refers to moving forwards and backwards.

Hence, if you move your mouse forwards and backwards without mouselook enabled, it will cause you to move forwards and backwards. This is janky and most people disable it.

I think zDoom is 'DOOM', to the extent that at base it plays very similarly (indistinguishably, to the inexperienced player) to more authentic limit-removing ports, and I would totally recommend zDoom as a newbie's first port so they can learn to appreciate the game, which is necessary to appreciate the vanilla engine.

zDoom allows, of course, for a whole slew of non-DOOM-like experiences which can nonetheless be very fun. I still refer to everything made under the DOOM engine in shorthand as "DOOM", with the exception of certain total conversions or other commercial titles (Strife, HeXen, Heretic, Chex Quest) with a distinct identity.

You know, this is an interesting argument. I've played DOOM for hundreds of hours either way, and I still can't decide whether I prefer rendering in 35 FPS or 60 FPS. 35 FPS feels much faster, but 60 FPS is smoother, and both of those are independently essential to the overall DOOM experience.

So I just let the framerate run as it does for the levels I play. This means I get vanilla framerate in the vanilla levels, and 60FPS for limit-removing and ZDoom stuff.

Also, you can run 60FPS in prBoom+ without breaking compatibility with the vanilla engine, which is a godsend.

I am not saying anyone in this thread is a casual, from what I've seen so far. I'm saying those who are incapable of appreciating DOOM the way it is designed, or any level for it is designed, are indeed casuals. Most people have stated that they understand and appreciate DOOM but enjoy a bit of gimmicky novelty on the side, and that's fine. They're not casual. They're not who I'm referring to.

"Casual" is not a buzzword. There are people who take videogames seriously and those who do not.

You're talking about priorities and a video game in the same sentence, somehow insinuating that playing Doom and posting on 4chan is a good way to spend your time. And when Marathon can make taking down ten guys at once with an AR seem like a big fucking deal, it's pretty damn substantial As for the story, even though it is a great part of the game, it's not all there is to it, Metal Gear Solid still has real solid gameplay despite having one of the most in-depth stories of all entertainment.

If your hardcore Doom skills can't handle that, try Project MSX. If you're still struggling, ww-diaz might be a little more your speed.

You seem to have this idea that either vanilla Doom is a hard game or that mods are inherently casual. Neither are true. Vanilla Doom might've been tough back in the day when people still used keyboard-only controls. Nowadays it's a cakewalk, especially the stock maps that everyone's blazed through several hundred times now. Simply because the casual mods are what's popular does not mean that every mod ever is casual.

>DOOM the way it was meant to be
Doom was meant to be modded. This is a major point purists generally fail to realize. Romero and Carmack both pushed heavily for modding, especially after seeing the little hack projects done for Wolf3D. Why do you think it's so easy to make custom maps, replace graphics, sounds, etc even in vanilla Doom? Hell, most of the features brought into the game by G/ZDoom and other modern ports were thought up by Carmack himself when he released the Doom source code. "Doom the way it was meant to be" doesn't mean much when the features you're bitching about were originally proposed by the creator of the engine himself.

Those are old statements I made a while ago. Besides, not much of what you quoted is wrong.

>I think they're a terribly overrated company and I hate Steam and everything it stands for, from every perspective.

What's wrong with this?

>Answer 1: Fuck indie games.

This is wrong devoid of context, but I think I was referring to console indie games. At any rate, in the grand scheme of the artform, so-called "indie games" are largely inconsequential, but I do enjoy a good number of them.

>I'm not advocating "the homogenization of the FPS genre". I'm advocating the holistic improvement of Halo independently of others. Halo is the only console FPS that matters

This was written in defense of Halo 4, which many people hated because it isn't Halo Simulator 2013 or exactly the same game as Halo 3. None of this is wrong when you understand the context it was written in.

>GoG is for plebians who can't configure a DOSBox.

This is true, regardless of the puerility it appears in.

>This is idiotic, as I am not "tripfags". My name here is SPC. SPC is not "tripfags". I am not any other "tripfag". I am SPC. Very simple to memorize.

I like to think of the vanilla DOOM engine as an argument and a statement unto itself, regardless of whether Carmack/Romero would've crammed in mouselook and jumping and OpenGL rendering if they had the tech available to them at the time.

One thing you muddle is that the intentions of them at the time are not necessarily the same as their ideology today... which in Romero's case is to push out disposable mobile games and in Carmack's case is simply to make engines for the sake of engines themselves.

I think a lot of what made DOOM great happened on accident. For instance, they couldn't have fathomed how infighting influences modern map design, and how much depth it contributes to high-level play. Likewise, I think the orthogonal balance of every weapon in the game save for the pistol (which has distinct design purpose still, as being the starting weapon which one must be rid of ASAP) is something indeed miraculous.

I'll ultimately hit a dead end with the argument of "way it was meant to be", and thanks for pointing out the fallacy of ascribing intent. I think I can reword that without changing the validity of the sentiment behind it, but... am I understood yet, anyway?

Though the lengthy rip and tear animations can be turned off by simply using alt-fire and going into smash mode. The lengthy animations can afford you a few seconds of invincibility that you might use to your advantage for maneuvering as well, but it sure is boring when you're plowing through a few dozen of them.

I'm trying to fix the issue of the mini weapons being targeted by autoaim.

Which of these would be best:

1) Prevent mini weapons from being targeted by autoaim, however minimarines will no longer seek out such weapons and will only pick them up when they happen to randomly run into them.

2) Turn off autoaim for all weapons so that mouselook has to be used, and players will be aware of this and turn on autoaim.

Bossifyer Alpha 0.01 is coming soon. What is Bossifyer? It is a wad with a script WHICH IS FUCK ALL ANNOYING TO DEBUG FUCK MY LIFE that finds eligible spaces in the map and inserts monsters into them! Specifically, one boss per level. Future versions will put minibosses in, and even allow console variables.

But what I need right now is YOUR input! I have been spending so much time on the script, I have yet to actually create any bosses to include! So as a result, just so people can actually play around with it while I work on more robust updates for it, I want some suggestions about some already existing boss monsters, both vanilla "othergame" (like Heretic bosses) and realm667 "custom bullshit" enemies!

These should fit two criteria:
--No larger than 90x90 in dimensions, maybe 100x100 or 110x110 at the very most, as the empty space checker checks the lattermost dimensions for space.
--Should not be easily beatable under singleplayer, vanilla weapons circumstances. The baseline monster I am using for Bossifyer is my first custom monster, the Monster Spawner. This beastie is a bitch and three fourths to even take on, much less defeat. When you fight it, you face a war of attrition, and you can't win in vanilla without a shitload of ammo. It's agile and it throws monsters at you left and right. It is a fucking horror.

However what I WILL be doing is looking at the DECORATE entries for any suggested monsters and beefing them up and possibly adding to their attacks. No I will not, at this time, be adding to any custom ACS script calls. Just... I just need a break from ACS. Good lord.

What I plan on is creating a randomspawner that throws out a variety of weapons and powerups around the boss wherever it spawns. The intent of this wad is compatibility with other wads. It's not going to use actor replacements at all.

So to that end once I release it I wouldn't suggest using it as a boss rush mode, considering it spawns monsters with about 70% success rate right now.

There's a thread on /vg/ about it: >>>/vg/38582587

https://www.havenandhearth.com/

It's a massively multiplayer isometric survival sim with permadeath. Best when played with partners or friends, since they can spawn beside you and lessen the labor load. Also, open and mostly unrestricted PvP and thievery is in play.

On the character I just started, I'm engaging in a sort of bondage fantasy. I spawned on the same screen as the master of this small settlement, and offered to be his farmer in the little empty annex you see in the pic. Eventually, I will rise up and brutally murder him in his idleness using the tools he has given me to serve him.
