Week 1 is officially over. It was a nail biter near the end. A for sure victory was taken away by an onside kick with 1 minute left and they had two timeouts remaining. Had to stop them in the red zone and run the clock ran out. Feels gud 2 be 1-0 tho :^)

Only on the GB version of NBA Jam TE, and it was a pain in the dick in the second half of the season. Beating the last two teams felt as much like luck as it did like actual skill.

The upshot is you unlock some fun novelty team expansions when you beat every team. I should dig up my password and record all the special teams sometime, some look like the devs just put themselves in as players while others actually appear to be an expanded roster.

The ironic thing about NFL Blitz is that I run blitz plays on defense maybe... 0.1% of the time. It's either your defense will get a sack or give up 25 yards, no inbetween

Far from my best blitz performance but pulled out a close W. I committed 3 turnovers or so but two of them were pure rubberbanding imo, one was just me being hasty to get the ball out before the reciever could get further into the route. Big blue soldiers on nevertheless

also, I feel like Blitz really rewards a Brady-esque methodology, ironically. Lots of checkdowns and screens, and when you see a guy get really wide open, that's when you throw the 30 yard bombs. Let your receivers do the work of getting yards after the catch. 3rd and short? throw that ball behind the line of scrimmage and run 2 yards for the fresh set of downs. Anything not super safe is gonna get picked when it comes to throwing I feel like. Likewise on defense, I throw in zone blitz maybe here and there but if you're on the goal line and you want to make sure they score? run goal line. most of the blitz plays are totally useless imo, running a mix of man and zone is where it's at most of the time

Dreamcast is home to the only faithful ports of the original arcade Blitz that exist. The n64/PS1 ports are ass and run at like 20fps. The HD version on the 7th gen consoles and the ones on xbox/ps2 are (as far as I'm aware) Blitz 2002/03 which runs on a completely new engine and i'm pretty sure was home console exclusive.

Personally I've actually come around to the newer Blitz but it's physics are a lot more floaty and madden-like rather than the laser beam passes and etc you get in the original Blitz. For being a bit less cracked out and insane it gives you a bit more variety in the playbook on both sides so there's definitely good aspects to it as well

It's worth it, but that's coming from a guy who's been playing Tecmo Bowl all his life. One of the great things about it is there's a very active community behind it (tecmobowl.org,) and each year they produce a romhack with up to date teams and rosters. They've even made hacks for rosters and teams that predate Tecmo Bowl. Makes a fan smile with pride to know there's that kind of love for the game out there.

First outing. Feels pretty satisfying to get a complete pass off, definitely not something you take for granted like in blitz.

Let me tell you a little bit about a semi-obscure game on the NES called Base Wars.

Base Wars is a baseball league sim released by Konami under their Ultra label in 1991. For all intents and purposes, it's a standard baseball game of its time, but with a twist, the teams are all made up of death dealing cyborgs. You can pick one of ten teams, or customize names for two of your own, and play through an editable Pennant mode with X number of games. You can further modify your teams by purchasing upgrades that make them run faster, hit harder, and catch easier. The nuance doesn't stop there, because once in game you'll find that instead of being tagged out, you get to fight for it. Combat plays like a belt scroller, and your attack options vary between what weapons you equip them with, and their cyborg model (Tanks can charge and run over opponents, M.Cycles can do a spinning cartwheel kick, etc..) You can model your team to be more effective ball players or pit fighters depending on your play style.

Tl;dr, this game is Bases Loaded meets Armored Core. While a cool concept, there are some issues with the game. Being an older title, there's no telltale sign for where the outfielder you're controlling is relative to the ball, which leads to conceding some runs that would otherwise have been easy outs. If there was ever a game that could benefit from a remake, this is the one. Maybe Konami will make a pachinko machine out of it. At least that would be proof that someone remembers it.
