It's really not as bad as a lot of people say it is. Only SUFFERING level maps are MAP09, MAP32, MAP04, MAP12, MAP20, and MAP23. Everything else is a pretty smooth ride.

I recommend playing without saving. Pistol Start is a lot more liberating, and it definitely grows some hair on your chest and balls, increasing your skill and confidence with the game.

Chaingunners are my favourite monster type behind Archvile.

Its mandatory for all doomers to finish Plutonia on UV no save scum pistol start. Its a right of passage. Keep at it, learning how to do it will set you up with the skills you need to face whatever mappers throw at you.

Doom noob here going through Plutonia for the first time after having played Ultimate, Doom II, and TNT Evilution. This feels like fucking bullshit and "getting good" seems to translate to "exploit enemy AI", rather than actually having any sort of fair challenge. If this is the best Doom has to offer, it's a way shittier game than I had hoped.

How the fuck is getting to know how monsters work and how to best fight them not gitting gud? What do you even mean by "exploiting" the AI?

Plutonia and its countless derivatives is kind of an acquired taste for many. You have to think of that style as almost like combat puzzles when the levels get really difficult. If/when it clicks for you, you'll find anything else terribly boring to play.

Plutonia was specifically designed from the ground up for Expert players who no longer find Doom 2 on UV challenging anymore and want something tougher. This is why the challenges it presents may seem "unfair" to a noob.
Theres also plenty of expert players nowadays who no longer find Plutonia on UV all that challenging anymore, either.
