Yes, it's more of an RTS than SF1 with enemies bombarding your home base and you needing to figure out the most optimal way to deal with them on a world map. There are still linear levels when you invade a battleship though.

It's my favorite game in the series, I vastly prefer the free-flight and RTS elements over the plain on-rails gameplay of the original and 64. A lot of the stuff it introduced should have become series staples.
>choose your character in order to hear different dialogue
>different ships with different stats
>multiple kinds of secondary items to pick instead of bombs
>multiple difficulty levels, layout of the stages and which bosses you encounter will change accordingly
It would only improve the replayability, in a series that basically depends on replayability.

the prototypes alone make the game an interesting specimen. between the FIFTEEN betas we have its so interesting to see (and actually play) the game develop from a primitive concept into a competent game with almost every step in between. dropped elements like a coop mode (which is why you still have an ai partner in the final game) and vs mode that all got dropped at various points in the development timeline.

Tried the snes ripped rom
Played a few levels, some of the levels were good but after a bit of randomly beating the levels I get to the boss and thats it, credits roll after about 20 minutes from when I started. Seems like a really short game and it feels a bit pointless just wandering around beating what seems almost like minigames. I like the orignal a lot better, feels more like afterburner.

Command TRIED to copy/adapt 2, but there are important aspects that it didn't account for. 2's somewhat simple and repetitive objectives still hold your interest because the whole game is basically one constant time attack, with time being a significant factor in your final score and ranking. Command would have done well to incorporate that component even if it remained otherwise unchanged. It feels good to play if you try to beat it as quickly as possible, but there's no actual incentive to do so. The fuel gauge is intended to make you hurry, but you get a bigger reward for taking your time and killing every enemy. This nets you tons of extra fuel time, as well as missiles that let you skip fights, eliminating any reason to rush around.

The lack of variety in objectives doesn't help either, which 2 overcame by including portions where you navigate the surface of planets and interiors of bases and battleships to press switches and such, i.e. doing something besides flying in circles shooting at shit. It was stupid to swap the real-time gameplay for limited turns, and there were some other bizarre decisions.
>fog of war on the tactical map, which has to be wiped away in order to see enemies: you can only clear a little bit, and it all comes back at the start of next turn anyways
>not enough to just kill enemies, to leave the encounter you also have to grab a number of pickups that only some of the enemies drop
>can play as multiple characters, but you have no freedom to choose who, it depends on which story route you follow
>locked out of making route choices on your first playthrough, forced into getting a shitty ending

Old games like this have strong replay value even if they have short campaigns, but this game has different endings based on the difficulty you choose (and Hard is pretty hard). Plus you unlock stuff after beating them all, so you gave up too quickly, anon.

It's more of a fun novelty for it being unreleased and ambitious. As a game it's far weaker than the first and 64 and I'd even argue that Command took this game's ideas and improved on them as far as the strategy/map navigation element goes.
