You can make a gamepad with just only one button so you can totally adapt the form factor to the hand perfectly. Problem is, you won't be able to play a single game with it.

GC Gamepad's problem was just that, lack of buttons and weird layout which didn't work for a lot of games.

Every time I see somebody claim that it was a perfect gamepad, that someone is telling me that he only plays Nintendo games and nothing else.

I can't understand who would care about this. Aside from fighting games or emulating older games, how often do you actually use the d-pad in 3D games? I can't think of any Gamecube game that I had issue with using the d-pad. Complain about the diminute second analog, now that's an actual issue when playing shooters. This controller is the peak of comfort, and the only people that complain are burgers that need the disgusting Xbox controller because their sausage fingers can't hold anything else.

Our rationale for choosing the fifth-generation systems as a cut-off is not based on age, but instead on what we deem to be particular technical attributes of these consoles compared to the sixth-generation and subsequent consoles. Specifically, we believe that there is enough of a style difference between the fifth- and sixth-generation consoles in a way we do not believe exists to the same extent for the sixth- and seventh-generation consoles or beyond that there is a benefit to focusing on the former (and earlier).

The sixth generation was the first full generation of consoles where the use of bitmap-based 2D in games was purely for the purposes of style rather than technological expedience. The sixth generation also saw the rise of certain styles of games which still dictate the games we play today, including Halo, which presaged an era where first-person shooters would be designed with consoles as first-class citizens, changing from Quake-influenced twitch shooters to slower games with limited weapon carrying and also popularising the use of vehicles in FPS games beyond just replicating rail shooter mechanics; Grand Theft Auto III and its sequels, which crystallised the attributes of the open-world third-person action-adventure; The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, which saw the first signs of the series becoming a mainstream success, with a tighter scope over its sprawling predecessor; RE4 set the standard for all modern third person shooters, along with the start of what have become gargantuan series such as Call of Duty and Battlefield. There are precedents in other fields in maintaining strict characterisation based on style that does not progress simply because of age h

The GC controller was objectively bad. It has less functionality than its competitors, one barely usable C stick and a terrible D-pad. The position of the A button and the shape of the X and Y buttons around it were rather genius though. Easy access to 3 buttons at once without accidentally pressing one you don't want.

People shit on the N64 controller but you technically have access to the same number of buttons as its competition at the time of its release. The GC controller was released after the dual shock so they really have no excuse anymore. Were they ignoring Sony and making comparisons to the Dreamcast controller or something?

nah, i have one of the newer ones they made for Smash for Wii U and it feels great and fits my hands perfectly. only problems with it is that the sticks don't click down so there's no L3 and R3 and no L2. the clacky noises the sticks and triggers make are really satisfying feedback for games like smash and mario kart.

Everyone talks about the layout but what about the feel of the controller? Felt clunky as fuck, felt like cheap plastic, a toy. Left thumbstick always ripped to shreds after a couple of years. I forgot I literally had wounds on my left thumb from the shitty left thumbstick. What was the point of that singular Z1 button. Stupid. Also I just now realized that the X and Y buttons are what would happen if R1 and L1 from the PS were retarded and decided to go on the face of the controller and just be on one side. The fuck where they thinking?

Miyamoto was having a mid-life crisis and couldn't cope with the increasing number of buttons required by games, so he thought video games needed to be streamlined. In his original conception, he wanted the GC to have even less buttons than what it ended up having.

it's really not though. the jump buttons are in a terrible position. the C stick is out of the way. dashdancing requires you to hold the controller and angle your thumb at an awful position. It's perfect for Melee because that's what the early pros used (and all they could use) to develop their skills, and as is the zoomer way, future pros just copied the millenials and Gen Xers before them so the "GCN controller for Melee" meme persists to this day.
