>dpad movement and run button
>poor implementation of alternate characters (Why can Luigi walk on water when it's literally never used? Why add Wario and have him be worse than everyone else and only useful for breaking black bricks?)

I think that it would have been a good remake if they had made it for the 3DS.

Let's go through the characters, see if you can find a problem
>Yoshi: You start as Yoshi in this remake of a Mario game. Yoshi has a moveset all about eating and shooting enemies, which are not at all relevant to Mario 64. Mario 64 itself already had a baffling array of "attack" moves and even combos to perform for pretty much no reason at all, like underutilised holdovers of some early-state design principle that was never followed, and Yoshi expands on this for some reason
>Mario:
>Luigi: Mario but better. The invisibility powerup was taken AWAY to give to Luigi exclusively.
>Wario: Mario but worse. The metal powerup was taken AWAY to give to Wario exclusively, and certain very rare areas that were normal bricks before can now only be broken by Wario.

Right. That's the point. It looked like a PS1 game. Grainy and shitty with pixels ao sharp they could stab your eyes out. You're right, most DS games look like that sadly.

>> No.7903364

>>7903209
Not really, its textures are very high res compared to any 5th gen console, they're perspective-correct and vertices are in floating point coordinate space so they don't wobble, unlike Saturn and PSX which straight up didn't have FPUs. It doesn't look like PSX. There's also no fog, no blur and there's a short draw distance of objects due to the slower-than-N64 processing and hard polygon limits.

SM64DS looks distinct from either console's games.

>> No.7903401

>>7903364
>and vertices are in floating point coordinate space so they don't wobble
Not true, the DS has no FPU. But DS vertex operations do use 32 bit fixed point numbers, while the Playstation's are only 16 bit.

It completely overhauled the gameplay of the original, replacing a good chunk of the game with inferior substitutions. If they literally ported all of Super Mario 64 intact with extra content, it would've been better. Instead we got a game which didn't feel like an improvement, but didn't feel like a remake.

>> No.7904332

>>7904281
That would have been a masterclass of programming since the DS's ARM9 runs at only about 2/3 of the N64 clockrate and you weren't allowed to offload anything to the ARM7 in its programming (which is 1/3 of it, ie you'd still need to have impossibly perfect multithreading anyway and zero of the functions requiring 3D stuff to happen on the ARM7).

>> No.7904352

It's not even the same game. The collision detection, RNG, and move mechanics are completely different algorithms that look like they were taken from a different game engine entirely.

Skelux made a few. He made a program to map an analog stick to the touch screen and some hacks to tweak the character movements. I think there's a way to use analog controls in retroarch too.

I'm not the biggest DS fan, but here are a few games I have fond memories of:
Mario hoops 3 on 3 (Possibly the finest Mario sports related title)
Bunch of Visual Novels (The Ace Attorney series, 999, Hotel Dusk)
Nanashi No Game
WayForward games (Shantae Risky's Revenge, Aliens Infiltration, The Thor Game)
That unreleased Gauntlet remake
Kirby Super Star Ultra
The Mario & Luigi Series
Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword (a fairly adequate adaptation of modern NG to touchscreen controls)
The weird portable version of Resident Evil
Viewtiful Joe: Double Trouble
Tetris (It has a bunch of additional modes)
The ports of TrackMania
That Wizard of Oz RPG
Super Scribblenauts
Shin Megami Tensei Strange Journey
Radiant Historia
Retro Gaming Challenge
Infinite Space
The Castlevania games
The Atari game collection that includes their military tank simulator
Choushoujuu Mecha MG
Solatorobo
The Lufia Remake
The Dragon Quest Games
Mario Kart

Both trackmania games on DS are a lot of fun, but the framerate sucks so they benefit a lot if you can overclock the console. DSi and 3DS consoles can do it with NTR Launcher or twilightmenu++.
