why do people like this game so much? I'm not trying to be confrontational I just can't imagine how you could have more fun with this game than, for instance, doom

It was their first FPS because they were too young to have played doom

I consider the game laughably bad. It's impossible to look at any of the models in the game with a straight face.

So I have no idea either.

>It's impossible to look at any of the models in the game with a straight face.
That was intentional, though. It was designed to deflate the game's inherent violence by presenting the enemies as absurdist. This is why "good" characters have more detailed character models than "bad" characters, too.

The best Doom was on the N64, though. So that makes no sense.

It doesn’t have the better multiplayer but the original Medal of Honor is the best game N64 owners missed out on.

not that it matters since the thread is a joke anyway but ge isn't really an "fps" in the "old school fps" sense. it's more an extension of virtua cop. so if you just really like old school fps... fine just ignore it and go play them since it is not trying to be that

It's got better physics, gunplay, animations, and more complex level design than Doom. The objectives are far more complex than finding 3 coloured keys, yet every mission can be completed in a few minutes if you're experienced enough. Doom is the perfect game for brainlets though. It's so simple, boring, and stupid anyone can get into it. Not to mention modern controls and graphics like what GZDoom offers absolutely destroy the visual and gameplay appeals of Doom, but the game is not very playable without it either. Unlike Doom, modern enhancements actually improve Goldeneye. Playing it on 007 difficulty with 1080p graphics, 60 FPS framerate, and m+kb controls feels like a very vast and natural improvement to the original console game. On the other hand, playing Doom on anything more than 320x200 resolution, 24 FPS cap, and archaic kb+m controls makes you realize how ugly, repetitive, boring, and poorly designed this game is.

Goldeneye's enemy hit reactions are much more fun and impressive than Doom's rather non reactive sprite enemies.
The AI also does a good job of showing off. It's fun seeing the enemies bobbing and weaving to dodge bullets.
I also think Goldeneye's approach to fighting real people was novel at the time. You weren't shooting monsters like Doom, Quake, or Duke 3D.
You also had mission objectives which made you feel more like a real spy.
I'm not trying to take anything away from Doom (which is a near perfect game), but Goldeneye was very refreshing at the time.
Goldeneye is one of the reasons Half Life was rebooted mid development. It also inspired Spielberg to make Medal of Honor.

Whats not to get. You are dumped into a big sandbox and you have to use all these tools to get out alive. Dam as an example, pretty fun to walk up to tower and shoot out the glass, what about walking along the truck for a cheeky ambush. Shooting the barrels, pretty cool watching them all react, shoot the alarm and it actually stops the alarm, new games don't even do that anymore. Then you shoot the lock and you can end the level or if you can go in the tunnel and shoot up all the furniture and watch it explode.

I don't really get what issue you are having, newer fps's copied a lot of stuff but a lot of stuff was also never seen again in the same way, the sequel to PD and halo didn't even replicate a lot of stuff in GE and actual perfect dark was worse in some ways.

Doom is faster and you may prefer the fantasy environments. Doom is probably more fun if you want to play en entire episode in one sitting.

non-linear level design, first game with headshots and limb damage, graphics were awesome, music is still awesome, objectives, interesting environments, and of course the multiplayer.
if you weren't there it just looks like Another FPS but you don't realize how revolutionary lots of it's features were at the time.

Someone should remake Goldeneye but with Deus Ex level of complexity while still retaining the snappy and fast paced gameplay of the original, not Deus Ex's utter garbage combat and sloppa design.

It only feels better because it's piss easy and it makes you feel less of a loser. Game's easy enough on a console with a controller with its auto-aim but m/kb completely demolishes it. Might as well pop in a trainer.

I've completed Doom 1 and 2 on the DOS, GBA, 32X, and vanilla zdoom. I still think Vanilla Doom isn't as complex or fun as anyone makes it out to be. My favorite mod is Complex Doom, and I don't think it even remotely turned the game into the best game ever.
>complexity and depth of combat
Find keys, strafe, shoot monsters? The only "complexity" there is is choosing which room to go in first and the right weapon to go with you. But that gameplay loop is not exclusive to Doom at all.

I'm talking vanilla Doom custom maps. And yeah, you can reduce most FPS to find keys, strafe, shoot. But IMO a player who isn't good at knowing and manipulating monster behavior, in-fighting, general crowd control etc on top of effective gun use is going to have a hard time pistol-starting their way through maps (without save-scumming) like the Chord series, Skepland and other hard Plutonia-like sets, not to mention the plethora of modern Sunder spinoffs. The simplicity of the game lends itself to endless difficult scenarios that go beyond holding down the fire button into a group of enemies.
