Welcome to The Garage, a thread where fans of racing vidya can discuss their favourite arcade, sim, kart, and any other kinds of racing games. If you’re looking for something new to play or are new to the genre ask other Anons for recommendations and remember to gear up and have fun.

The previous thread oversteered into a tree: >>7804163

>is it good other than for the novelty of a kart game in the doom engine?
I hate making comparisons, but when it comes to originality of kart racing games it all points back to Super Mario Kart. That said it's SMK with 3D-planes and slopes, but it's not for casual gameplay. The past week I've played in online lobbies I've been getting my ass handed to me. The drifting is weird in this as you need to get drifting spark-boosts to maintain your speed (MKDD and DS was like this too); said sparks only work on three levels and there's no in-between calculation that's dependent on how long you drift. If you slip up wrong and mistime a spark, you can lose your place really quick. The time trials ghosts range from easy as a tutorial to demanding near-perfection on the more difficult tracks like Toxic Castle or Volcanic Valley.

It has Sonic characters, so I know that's an immediate turn-off for people. But since it's DOOM, If there's a WAD for it, you can race as anyone. Pic related

Hey garage buds. What games could I race as a 4th gen Honda accord (88-91) (ideally 4door sedan) and/or 88-91 toyota supra. I've looked at gran tourism 1-2-psp, Tokyo xtreme racer 1-2, initial-d, racing lagoon. Found a few that were kinda close. Any suggestions are appreciated!

Curious choice. That accord gen is not in many games, it should appear in GT4 and PSP but it's the coupe version.
It's also in the first Getaway but I don't remember if it is the sedan or the coupe.
The Supra is a lot more common, it appears in every Gran Turismo and TXR game, including 3 and Drift 2. I know for sure you can start GT2 with a '90 Supra by buying it in the used lot.
Racing lagoon doesn't have either cars iirc
Not many other retro games have them.
>>7851207
Sounds good just by virtue of being a solid kart racer with an active multiplayer playerbase desu, time trials can only get so much fun. Really made me curious to try it.
I don't mind the Sonic characters, especially if it has mod support.
The first time I saw webeums of it I thought it was the kart equivalent of those Smash mods that add goku to the roster kek.

Do you want some type of racing in particular?
(street cars only, on circuit, rallying etc.)
R:Racing Evo is sim-ish, maybe a bit too lightly so, and the Story mode is setup in a similiar way to Ace Combat.
Toca series, the ps2 ones have the "management" end at selecting the cars iirc, been a while since I last played.
Otherwise just go straight for an actual sim anon. Most of them have 0 frills and just driving

Supra turbo and the accord is pretty modified but still a wip. Would be fun to play as them in some games. I thought I remembered my supra in txr, but wasn't sure as those games use fake car names. Thanks for verifying. Are you familiar with any of the others in that series? Like the Wangans, etc. Pretty long list if you go to series timeline https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokyo_Xtreme_Racer.. Yeah, figured so, great cars anon, I'm jelly.
Never played the Wangan games so I can't help you with thsose, I did play most of the TXR ones tho.
They all use the real names for the cars, except TXR zero and 2, but they are identical to the real thing excluding the names. With the cars not being licensed the game let's you do more weird shit with the bodykits for most of the cars.
3 and all 3 drift games all have the Mk3 Supra, 3 even let's you swap engines in if that's your cup of tea, however it has no Hondas.
Pick one that interests you the most and give them a shot, I shill them here every time I get the chance, they are great games. Either go for TXR Zero for the most extreme modding and hondas on the highway, TXR3 for more polished "classic" TXR, TXRD2 if you want touges or one of the 2 earlier drift games if you want to drive some euro cars on the mountain passes.
also TXR3 has a pretty annoying bug at a certain point in the game, there are ways around it tho

The older I get the more I apprecciate a good city circuit. Getting apexes right on 90 degree turns feels great.

Great taste anon. I like the rougher feel of the WO1 ost, but the one in 3 completes the game perfectly.
Try listening to the PSX Armored Cores soundtracks. Same feel as Ace Combat 3, but rougher around the edges.

It's an impressive fangame for what it is, more boggling that this is Doom Legacy it's running on. Taking a glance at the code and lua, it's not surprising that a kart game was able to come out of a platformer. It seems to be a true labor of love with how much attention to detail they put into this thing, even having programmed a sense of momentum into driving.

>Have DT770's

I'm not sure if that is a sign the classic games had really fucking good sound design or that more recent titles are really lazy - only real exception that spring to mind is wreckfest as its sound design for metal crunching and glass shattering is really, really good (which it should be given how they recorded it). Still thogh games designed to run in software on barely-above-potato parts from goddamn 1996 should not be rivalling the latest and greatest of today. The techno thread on /vr/ is a real highlight of this with numerous racing examples posted.

The most obvious answer is NFS II and III (high stakes and porsche have a different vibe), re-volt and destruction derby 1 (DD2 was actually slammed for its thrash OST at the time because techno was the popular thing). Once licensed music gets included wipeout and rollcage are arguably the titans of the time period.

Older racing games were made by people who liked the subject matter at least a bit. A lot of games we discuss here came from Japan, during a period of economic prosperity, where most devs where at least a bit interested in cars, or by UK lads who grew up with motorsport.
Horizon and the likes on the other hand feel like they were made by checking boxes on a list, by people that couldn't give less of a shit about racing.
The cars now are just a way of displaying yourself to others, thank to social media culture, safetybabbies or whatever else you want to blame for it. Racing became second to showing the car itself off.

I think in my hundreds of races I've maybe won once or twice. That could say something about my shitty skills, but some people are gods on this game.

Shit load of custom tracks and even more custom characters, with enough patience you can make your own since it's the doom engine.

Most servers have packs that you download when you connect and you can play as any of those.

Honestly it's a genuine 9/10 for me, it feels like the original F- Zero or SMK games.

Easy. It was a hot, humid summer day in july and being like 10 at the time my mother had purchased NFS3 for me for some reason or another (doesn't matter) as I had been hyped as shit for the game. I got home from school, chucked the disc in my PS1 while sweating my balls off in the heat and booted it up. After learning how the menu worked I picked the ferrari 355 (in red of course), atlantica, night time and weather on to see these new, mind blowing effects the back of the case promised. I sat there for a few hours in the heat being mentally cooled by the roaring thunderstorm in the game sucking me and truly immersing me in the experience of the game.

Never before had a racing game seemed so real and so much like the actual bedroom poster I had on my wall - which was a countach at the time iirc.

negcons the peak controller for racing games, all wrs are done on them for every game that supports it. Then again my 3.24 with trueno is a great time only a second off the neg times and i used the stock analog.

yeah brake use is often a part of things like in daytona where theres a trick of switching from 4th to 2nd which lets u slide with no speed loss. The A cars turn much heavier and obv the higher speed adds to that, you need to brake and plan a lot more imo.

Eh the uniqueness of the negcon is because of when it was released, not the inherent uniqueness of the controller itself. I wasn't suggesting that, it would look awful, especially with the wheel arches getting widened with the rest of the model. I was thinking more of something along the lines of taking the rear of the model and tweaking it a bit until, scaling it a bit and moving it accordingly.
It would be easy with modern 3D tools, but I never worked with the stuff PD used so it probably was a bit more complex than that.
I'd say them recycling the model is a pretty cheap move too to be fair

Also what makes the 300ZX thing all the weirder is that the stock versions of both cars actually have different textures, the 2 seater is a coupe and the 2+2 is a T-top with glass roof sections, so clearly they went to some extent to set the cars apart, but not to such an extent where they would actually use the correct models. I'm still unsure whether they modeled a 2 seater and stretched it for the 2+2 or whether they modeled a 2+2 and squished it into a 2 seater because they were at least clever enough to leave away the fuel door entirely which would be on opposite sides of the left rear wheel arch between the two versions.

Seems like they used a similiar approach for most cars which had two different versions. As someone who was a Saturn owner for the entire generation, is it worth going back to GT1 and 2 as a fairly casual racing fan?
I remember it being touted as a 'sim' game, but it also doesn't seem painfully difficult like modern sim racers, and has some cool 90's cars and tuning aspects etc.

What's the best retro one to check out for single player content?

Also, anyone else a big fan of Speed Devils/Demons? I loved the creative tracks and the little side-objectives like breaking speed cameras, not to mention getting car upgrades that were visually reflected in the cars was so much fun.

I think it has one of the first implementation of the flashbacks system most racing games have nowadays.
It's a single make racing game that came out during the make's darkest hours imho. It has some interesting Alfas you can't drive anywhere else, but still lacks a lot of cool stuff, while they added shit like 3 different GT variants. the racing/driving is serviceable.

While a technically inferior effect I have a real nostalgia fuelled soft spot for vertex (rather and projected) headlights in old NFS games. I think it comes down to me playing the playstation versions first and stood no chance in hell of having a voodoo card in 1998 so while I can see the power of 3D acceleration today and appreciate it, vertex just hits the right notes for me and given neither headlight rendering is gamebreaking one way or another there is no downside to choosing the worse effect.
