I wouldn't put much stock into Throwback Galaxy. I mean, it's called "Throwback Galaxy". It was meant to be a treat for fans and not considered the actual Whomp's Fortress. In the case of Dire, Dire Docks and Hazy Maze Cave, they might be real or they might not considering you have to jump into portals to reach both. I'm not comfortable using the word "real" here anyway, as all these worlds obviously exist as much anything else in the Mushroom World, they're just magical creations of the Stars/Bowser's magic/Peach's magic.

That fortress has the same parts of the walls removed that you had to remove in the original game, and the npcs talk about the previous game. For the entrance of the Rainbow Ride and the other sky level next to it is is the same graphic as the painting to the right, pic related. And the other sky level is clearly real because if you fall off you fall into castle grounds, so it is above the castle.

I'm just telling you what the game itself says. This is a direct quote from the very first Toad you see in the castle:
>"Am I glad to see you! The Princess...and I...and, well, everybody...we're all trapped inside the castle walls. Bowser has stolen the castle's Stars, and he's using their power to create his own world in the paintings and walls.
They're created worlds. If there's a place in outer space that looks like Whomp's Fortress it's either coincidence or there's some other explanation for it, but it's not the painting world. The game is very clear that these are magically created worlds, even the manual backs this up. As for Rainbow Ride, either that is a place that exists above the castle as you say, or it's just magic that returns Mario to the castle just like it returns him every time he's beaten within a world.

Magic mushrooms weren't illegal in Japan till 2002. There are definitively actual magic mushrooms in Nintendo games. In the Japanese version of Pokemon Red and Green, the Hiker that was localized with hayfever was high on magic mushrooms. The mushroom hunting guy in Link's Awakening. The mushrooms on your head in Mother 2, the literal blatant fucking mushroom trip in Mother 3, and We Heart Katamari' mushroom descriptions tell you which ones are poisonous and which ones made someone fall over laughing.

Im not saying its drugs but Im saying yes it was drugs.

You mean those games that are full of psychedelic 60s references because the creator and the composers grew up watching American TV and listening to American music in the 60s? Yes, those are psychedelic mushrooms. Not part of the literal magical (not magic) Mushroom World that was partly inspired by Alice in Wonderland.

What's irrelevant is the question of where each of the stages are in relation to Peach's castle. Both the game and instructional manual say that Bowser created worlds within the paintings/walls of the castle (the only exceptions, as I said earlier in the thread, are the secret slide and secret aquarium made by Peach). Where is the desert level in relation to Peach's castle? It doesn't matter. Call it a pocket dimension like that guy said, or just use Nintendo's own type of language and call it an enchanted world inside the painting. I'm not anti-Mario lore or anything (in fact I kind of hate it when people mock the idea of continuity and lore in the Mario series), but you and a few others in this thread seem to be thinking way too deeply about this when the game is crystal clear on what and where the painting worlds are.

All the secret courses are hidden stars put there by peach or already part of the castle. So that includes cap switch stages and the 8 red coin course on the top floor, not just slide/aquarium.

Switch stages are most interesting since they may be part of the castle. Metal (which is accessed from but not part of hazy maze) leads out to the waterfall, while vanish cap may be beneath the castle grounds. Those could also just be pocket dimensions with magic warps to/from the castle though.

Wingcap course is...weird.

Dire Dire Docks is presumably real, and not accessed by a painting. Backdoor memes aside, it does lead into the pond out of Peach’s castle if you go through the opened underwater door. Or maybe he made a world with a warp in it that leads to the castle.

The three bowser locations might be real. Mario flies back to the castle after the third. The entrance to them all are warp zones instead of a direct path though.

I’m just saying that aside from the paintings, some locations are ambiguously either real or ‘made’. Hazy Maze Cave is also ambiguous as to which it is.

The paint lore is interesting but sort of vague
>Mario Paint
surprisingly, this game has zero impact
>Mario 64
bowser created worlds in the paintings somehow, or brought the paintings to life if they were already there.
>Luigi's Mansion
Mario is trapped in a painting, and so are the ghosts. souls can be pressed in or washed out with water?
>Mario Sunshine
Paint is the same as goop. the magic paintbrush can hide coins & whole buildings inside paint until it is cleaned. paint is also used to make portals to real locations. Did bowser use the paintbrush in 64 offscreen or did E Gadd take note of what Bowser did and invent it?
>Galaxy 2
Whomp's fortress appears so was either a portal painting, or bowser created something he knew about, or brought to life a painting of the planet that peach already had.
>Paper Mario Color Splash
A game I haven't played which does lots of things with paint, but it doesn't look connected to the paint lore from SM64.
>Odyssey
Another game I haven't played but it looks like paintings are all portals to real places because I've seen a peach's castle painting. I might be wrong though.
>Bowser's Fury
Yet another game I haven't played but Jr appears with the paintbrush iirc so it might have important details.

It does? Where?

Are you thinking of Dry Dry Desert?

Also “real” isnt the right word to use here. The worlds are artificially created but that doesnt make them not real. The question is just if they’re their own pocket dimensions or part of Mario’s world. Most are explicitly stated to be a world inside a painting with the invisible walls explained as the painting’s edges.

They could be paintings of real places though, in which case there is a version of that area in Mario’s world which the painting is a copy of.

>Whomp's fortress appears so was either a portal painting, or bowser created something he knew about, or brought to life a painting of the planet that peach already had.
Gonna completely unironically speculate an explanation on this

Rosalina’s storybook shows the events of an alternate Mario and Peach and their daughter, these characters are obviously ‘further along’ than the versions we play as. It’s another world, another dimension, whatever you want to call it.

So from that, the observatory traveling through space isnt just different galaxies, but different ‘worlds’. Or rather, the game doesnt really differentiate between those two things.

Whose to say the world wasnt made via the painting and the power of the stars, and as a result it’s floating ‘out in the void somewhere’ which is a place the faceship can actually travel.

A lot of ‘space’ in the Mario Galaxy games is full of blue sky and clouds, some parts of deepspace have fucking rainbows and seagulls. It’s not space the way we think of it. It’s a way to access other worlds, which can mean a lot of different things. I know in some Jap media like DBZ you can reach things like the afterlife by going out far enough in space, I dont know how common that line of thinking is in Jap fantasy stories. It’s not just physical space between planets, though.

All that, or it’s just a fun little throwback with no thought behind it.

Or both. With Koizumi and Miyamoto both on the game, both is a possibility.

In galaxy 1, bowser ripped the castle out of the sky so I figured all the earth like planetoids (& things like the penguins who aren't part of bowser's army) were also pulled out from the mushroom kingdom, and he planned to take over the mushroom kingdom by transporting it to his own planet.

I guess it doesn't work in galaxy 2, but I carry on thinking there's something to it in the first one. Its like how the trails bananas in donkey kong country are possibly contextualized as dropped from the stolen horde that DK is following to find it, but in DKC2 & 3 there is no horde but there's still bananas. unless DK took his horde with him when he was kidnapped.

Fuck this thread it's a fucking video game and the entrances and exits are game devices, even the castle itself is a storytelling device to give the player somewhere to go between the levs and make the game more enjoyable.
Of course the sewer/cave level was put in the sewer of the castle because it's easier to make a mental connection and so was the air bonus stage put above the castle. There's also no giant void under the castle where they built a slide.

It looks like that miniature is the mansion and Mario gets small and enters it
Even if it's a portal, it's different than the others.
The game teaches you to fight boos before you are allowed to enter the level, that's why it's not a painting. Just another gameplay device.
The air cap teaches you to stop and look with C-up, and to look for secrets in the castle itself.
I don't think they were concerned with matching the levels with the castle other than superficially as a hub.
It's a very experimental game that broke a lot of new ground and had to teach players that had never played a 3D platformer before. I don't think they would allow cosmetic considerations to limit the gameplay possibilities. And I don't think they were concerned with where Peach's poo would end up.
Mario games have always had cave levels and pipe mazes, it's only natural that they would make one and try to position it in a location that made sense for the player to discover and remember.
The same is valid for cloud levels.
Maybe they wanted the design of the towers to really represent the castle towers high up in the air, then there are no towers when you are with Yoshi, both the towers being there and not being there make sense in their context.
It's a game.
