If you're talking Dead Simple, Sandy Petersen was also involved in the making of that map. I'd even argue the concept was likely Petersen's idea, as McGee's maps generally weren't very conceptual, besides maybe The Crusher if you can even count that, where as Petersen loved doing concept maps, especially in Doom 2.

Mess hall for the crew. The more I play Duke levels the less I think they are connected to any sort of "plot" even loosely speaking in the expansions especially since it seems like a very transparent excuse to do some fighting in a submarine or whatever but hey, it's charming and funny and I think it works well. That actually sounds like a shitload of fun. Only thing you run into is an issue with who gets to use what key.
You could set it up so one anon lays out a city block with 3 keys to unlock an exit in a subway or tunnel or some such, with 3 building lots being buildings where you get keys, and a bunch of other buildings being just for exploration or requiring keys to get in.

Each lot is a different shape and size, so if someone wants to just make a small mom and pop store or minor area they can. Little park... Community swimming pool.

99% sure that the Arch-Vile shouldn't be able to do that due to collision checks (on his end, anyway, if the guy he's rezzing gets stuck that's not his problem), so that's probably the version that you're using.

God, no! Hexen 2 is worse. Still a great game, but not nearly as inspired: unique dark fantasy replaced by boring not-cultures, shit enemy design for the most part (spiders, mummies, imps, panthers, scorpions, such epic enemies!), most of which also have invincibility frames that are telegraphes very poorly, Eidolon is barely present compared to Korax's constant taunts, also he's just Satan. Soundtrack is also blander when it's original and not just remixes. Some puzzles are bugged, movement feels weird, classes are a rehash but each one feels worse than their counterpart except for the Necromancer but that's not surprising because the Mage was hot garbage. Also Hexen 2 has no automap. And you can't "use" things.
On the other hand, Hexen 2 is a lot harder, which is good, has lots of good puzzles, which is great, when it gets it right, it's awesome (skull wizards are awesome in every way).

Weird question, was there any hub-bub about the Duke 3D level where you escape from prison (map3? I forget exactly) back at release time? I ask specifically because, the first time I played it, I was briefly puzzled about how to exit, until I did simple process of elimination to figure out the exit. Now, the game is obviously chock-full of movie references, and that was plainly references Shawshank, which I realized after the fact when thinking about it. My thinking was, Duke was popular with a lot of kids, even if it wasn't necessarily advertised as a kid's game. Did they have trouble with that exit? Was that element of shawshank well known enough at the time that most anybody would have known the exit? I'm asking just out of curiosity; I don't think it was a big puzzle or anything, but I could see it throwing someone off, especially someone not used to having to use the thing between their ears for shooters.

I can kind of see how asians could see Shadow Warrior as ignorant / offensive but personally I see 3drealms just taking the kung fu movie aesthetic, toss in all the asian tropes and deliver it with a tongue in cheek attitude and for some reason it just works really well.

Hell, they made Redneck Rampage and treated the rural south with the same kinda attitude though sadly Redneck Rampage's bit of a scuffed shooter compared to Shadow Warrior but both games get their laughs in a similar manner, with very cheap jokes that end up being amusing anyway.

So, have you guys ever taken any paid work to make maps/script/whatever in the Doom engine? I'm asking because I'm considering making a project in GZDoom to eventually sell on Steam, and it wouldn't be fair for me to ask people to work for free.

You may be joking, but I remember as a teenager I thought a build engine game based on 90's hip-hop/rap culture with a bit of blaxsploitation thrown in there would have been dope. Made sense to me since it fit the whole Build "take a pop-culture subgenre and make a big fun caricature out of it" thing. You could have a badass main dude that spouts cool one-liners, with like a glock and some uzis, and maybe like a big boombox rocket launcher thing. Tons of cool city levels, from ghettos to luxurious mansions. Chicken and drank as health refills, with maybe weed that acts kinda like RR's alcohol. Tons of music references...
It all felt like both worlds fit naturally together. I never went anywhere with it cause I'm a country boy from bumfuck nowhere, Europe, so I knew I wouldn't have the instinctual jive needed to make it work, but if I grew up in America I would have been working on that shit day and night

Yeah, Soldier of Fortune has some pretty damn good 'feel' to the guns.
Didn't really like the submachine gun in SoF1 though and it lacked a proper assault rifle, I enjoyed it more when SoF2 came out and you could have essentially a half lifeish game feel and tear up terrorists and narcosoldiers with an M4 carbine and other realistic guns.
Fun fact but John Mullins, the game's protagonist was U.S Special Forces in Vietnam / Laos and iirc an actual mercenary afterwards, he's a pretty based old coot.

Its okay. For its time it was amazing. it just showed how much pcs were flexing consoles it would be some years until RE4 came along with also location damage. Although I guess goldeneye had it.

Its a bit jank I replayed it recently and its AI is full fucking dumb and there are tons of wipeout kills in the highest difficulties. its cheap as fuck sometimes. Not good in the gameplay department but decent I guess.

I think Kingpin played a bit better.

Dont forget to use SOF plus if you are playing in a mdoern rig. its great.

But man it really revels in its 80s action movie feel. Infiltrating a missile factory beneath a Sudanese slaughterhouse is pure fun. I guess it would be racist today as well like RE5.

Sort off. I think some were okay, like Starfleet Command series, Bridge Commmander.

ST is kinda withering away these days, thankfully the much gayer Mass Effect didn't really seemed to take the torch.

This is natural today anyway pop culture is tired and slowly degrading and cant seem to produce anything that sticks.

The 2nd game also has an issue with the direction as a lot of the dialogue feels mis-spoken or out of place. Like they didn't have someone who knew the context in the booth. But it's still a solid game.

Duke Nukem 3D was basically the first (or among the fist) set piece FPS and had the same gameplay idea as Half Life - move around visually impressive areas, while cool stuff happens on the screen. The enemy design and combat in general took a nosedive in comparison to Doom, the abundance of hit scanners was especially bad. The combat is overall better because the enemies arent complete pushovers, but some of them are way too OP (mainly the angels). Nostalgia goggles are kinda interesting. For instance, I fucking love Trespasser. It's great. I've played the hell out of it. I've played it repeatedly, back to back. And I know it's shit.
Nostalgia has to be a component of that because I can see all the flaws. The goggles do nothing, in that regard. But when I play it I still get the same satisfaction when I twitch shoot a raptor with those weird floaty arms, or successfully narrowly evade a T-Rex with it's fucked up collision. At the time of release I was blown away more by what it was trying to accomplish more than it's actual success at the task. So much so that it let me see past all that and somehow immerse myself in a one armed world of limping dinosaurs.
And when I play it now I don't find it clunky at all, aside from it being obviously so. I completely get how anyone who plays it now would think it was trash, hell I understand how someone who played it at release would think that. But it engrained the physics of the world and the pre-wii wrist controls in me that it's like I never stopped playing. After the first level I'm smacking raptors to death with my gun despite having an excess of ammo, just to see if I can get away with it. Because it never stopped being fun.

Okay, so current thoughts:
>The vines are ugly
>The vines which you can drop through blend into the vines which you can't
>A confusing mash up of assets, sounds and music
>Surprisingly okay weapons that feel pretty good to use, apart from the crossbow
>Secrets seem to only give you minor bonuses at best
>Esoteric switches which don't clearly show what they even do
>Why can't you buy ammo at level 0?
>An RPG system when there doesn't appear to be any kind of meaningful progress or choices involved at all
>A difficult to manage spell system which uses Doom's inventory, switching between spells is a pain in the ass
>The fireball is usually the superior option to shooting something
>A lot of the hallways and gaps are too narrow for you to build up any kind of momentum, as you keep touching walls and losing it
>The single boss fight so far was mind numbingly easy, but I'm guessing it's just a tutorial boss
>Why are the bombers from Serious Sam in this game and why do they poison you?
>It tries to be a cinematic experience and fails
>Doors blend into the environments and don't stand out enough
>The use of colour and lighting is really bad at some segments
>A lot of backtracking involved, rather than using looping level design
Overall, not as bad as the Touhou wad so far. It's not horrible, just mediocre. See you faggots later.

>GPU
Don't buy into the memes, CPU matters most. GZDoom gains little from GPU muscle for other than a few fancy effects: shadowmaps and SSAO. In my understanding from having played with clock/powersave settings on a dated weak laptop and a recent desktop (both AMD), past a certain point where basic shader execution and fillrate or something ceases to be a bottleneck, GPU has very little effect on performance. Just a guess but graphics memory bandwidth may be a factor if a laptop uses RAM for VRAM like mine does. Don't know anything about Intel GPUs (or really anything besides my own equipment) but I'd guess anything from AMD or Nvidia that comes with a recent laptop that has a good CPU in the first place probably is fine. Maybe the absolute cheapest ones have some difference, just don't expect one from the top end.

>Vulkan
It only gives me a 10% performance boost on a linedef-heavy map. On the other hand, the environment variable mesa_glthread=true (on Linux, only works with the open-source drivers for AMD/Intel) gives 33%.

I think there are some theoretical ways Doom rendering could be made to rely less on the CPU and more on the GPU in the future. But capable programmer manpower is hard to come by for a free project and Graf probably isn't too motivated to think about overhauling the engine himself as long as whatever rig he uses manages 60fps on medium-sized maps, so I wouldn't count on it happening anytime soon.

I don't have Windows installed so can't confirm myself if it makes performance on Linux better than on Windows, but I suspect it does and it might entirely level out the infamous driver advantage of Nvidia over AMD in GZDoom which is due to drawcalls being handled slowly. This feature sends them instantly to a different thread that issues them in batches so they don't block the game, which improves performance. AFAIK the proprietary drivers don't do that and aren't expected to because AMD has basically abandoned improving their OpenGL implementation. Some info, outdated chart: https://www.gamingonlinux.com/wiki/Performance_impact_of_Mesa_glthread

>>7870427
Hard to say. As I said I don't know much about Intel GPUs but I think it's common for them to perform quite poorly compared to AMD/Nvidia. I think they also suffer from the memory bandwidth thing I mentioned. To test how big a factor shader performance is you could try LZDoom - if it's significantly faster then the GPU is not at the level I mean is "enough" that it no longer matters.

>>7870431
>Oh so you're saying any modern top-end discrete GPU is enough for Doom? Good to know.
Huh? No, I guess I worded it a bit confusingly. I'm saying I believe there's very little difference in performance between somewhere around current low-ish midrange and the top end. Especially if you don't mind ignoring the few demanding effects that actually use the GPU where the difference is probably greater.

I dunno. I think Icon of Sin clone has less requirements to be one than a Dead Simple clone does.
Dead Simple maps not only require the 666/667 tags (and their respective monsters), but they have to be used to promote arena style gameplay to still feel like a Dead Simple map. If the tags are used for entirely different purposes (like in Valiant's Mancubian Candidate), then it doesn't feel like a dead simple map to me.
Where as I'd argue that Icon of Sin maps only really need to involve the boss shooter and perhaps the boss brain to feel like one. The Lift Gimmick is just one of many ways you can tackle the setup, but not required.

This stuff drives me crazy sometimes as its both a blessing (potential dmg avoided) and a curse (momentum reset mid-dodge) - not to mention that somehow this anomaly also got carried into the Quake2 engine as well, as enemy blaster shots and rockets also start behaving as solid obstacles if you get bunnyhopping fast enough behind them...

You mean the avatar sprite or the actual gun sprite you see from fps view?

Avatar sprites are pretty straightforward, as every player class has their own sprite anyway, so that would be no problem.
The gun sprite itself can be achieved by several means.
You could have several sets of differently colored sprites and do a class check at select or even pickup and load the according sprites for that.
Or, if the gun's colors are paletted you do a simple translation (also checked against player class).

However, the way I am implementing classes is that each class has their own starting weapon.
Billy starts with water bombs, Bobby starts with the squirt gun, and Molly, being the smallest and weakest, gets the super soaker (probably because she cried to mom about it who said she can have it, that dumb brat).

Although I have actually considered giving each class their starting weapon for their sprite, as currently everyone just has the squirt gun.

Also without Doom and id, the very concept of FPS wouldn't be truly developed the way we know today so there's a chance we wouldn't get neither Build Engine or Unreal. Hell, there's a chance Gaben would still be at Microsoft making Windows versions.

Yeah, its much more convenient. In Build, everything is a sector, wall, or sprite. Sprites can be placed anywhere and can be oriented to be flat, face the player, stick on the wall, or stick on a floor. Plus they can be arbitrarily individually scaled/flipped/rotated. Whereas in Doom, to make sprite decorations you have to replace an existing actor or create a new one (in ZDoom). To make wall-oriented decorations, youd have to use a texture and just place it on a line 1 unit from the wall. And theres no way to make floor-oriented decorations in vanilla.

People dont give enough credit to LGS, I think parallel to ID they influenced the industry immensely in the fps department.

Thief and SS are not only masterpieces it was revolutionary.

>>7871836

I think the previous footage of 1997 era graphics Ion Fury is also great. They have to tech to do a Sin or Half Life era game at any time.

I guess Wrath already showed this but still. I think it looks neat. The medkits are even HL ones.

I would like it. I think the 1999 era cozy 3d with slightly improved but still low poly models would look amazing. Focus everything else on a good experience.

eh, wages of sin is fine. the one thing it has over SiN is that its consistently more balanced combat-wise up until the last bullshit boss fights. but the levels are blander, mostly featuring either bland corridors or large featureless spaces, usually without interactivity. the worst example of this is the abandoned building level. but there is a lot of clever design going on with it too, mostly in the form of scripted sequences that makes the objectives feel they have a real effect on the level, like tracking down an annoying employee in the warehouse level and powering lights back on in the art museum level. that and the terminals are autistically detailed with e-mails you can read through to find various gags, a very cool addition even if a bit useless. its worth playing after you finished SiN, but its another reminder that as good SiN can get, it never had consistently great single-player content to match its interesting mechanics. and that SiN 2 will probably never happen.

anon, do you think this object could be hijacked, replacing the texture with tree leaves and using it as leaves in a tree brush?

Didn't Memento Mori come out like two years before Final Doom? TeamTNT was going to release Evilution regardless of commercial success, so really the only thing that came of it was that it got the Casali brothers jobs with how well they did Plutonia, and it's hard to say that Half Life would've been any less influential without Dario's level design, if it even was Plutonia that got Dario the job at Valve and not his Quake modding stuff.

i'm saying final doom being a widespread commercial product seemed to have been what got a lot of people to realize how moddable doom was. there's probably a reason carmack decided to release the source around that time

Just curious if any of you are submitting anything to that RAMP project or whatever. I have an idea for a map but I don't know if I have the actual skill to put it to work, so I might just make a techbase or something.

No need, you can just make a new sprite and load it as a model via misc_model.

you really don't need sprites for transparency, this ain't 2010
just use a fence texture or make an alphamasked .mdl model
unless you're going for strict dosquake compat for some reason

Except for the grenade launcher I more or less agree. The POM bong bong bong BOOM is fun.
It doesn't look great.

Are my settings fucked, or does that map just run like ass on any engine other than vkQuake or FTE?

Carmack was already in the habit of releasing id source code after the next game was ready to come out, he'd done the same with Wolf3D

From TNT it's Pharaoh
From Plutonia it's either Speed or Twilight
