> Sonic
- 100+ games (I don't know the real number, just throwing this out)
- multiple TV series
- merchandise
- tie-in promotions
- hit live action movie

> Crash
- Started out strong with some good games under Naughty Dog. But Universal Interactive owned Crash, not Sony. Universal was bought out by Vivendi and we saw the Vivendi Crash years.
> Activision-Blizard ended up with Crash rights.
> Sat dormant for many years.
> Was reintroduced with Skylanders?
> Did not see a resurface until recent years.

Sonic may have rough spots. But the character only really left for a short period of time in the Saturn years. Oddly the time when Crash was at his biggest.

Sonic Jam and 3D Blast were ports of Genesis/ Mega Drive games. They were token games at best. Sonic R was the only real original Sonic game for the console, and that was made by Travellers Tales. Sega of America tried making Sonic XTreme, which ended in failure.

>> No.7868262

>>7868234
It's funny, I always assumed that Sonic 3D Blast on the Saturn was like a last effort port to finally get Sonic in 3D on the Saturn, but I was surprised to find out they came out within one month of each other. Wasnt so much a "hey remember that one game? We couldn't give you 3d sonic so how about you replay that?" situation as a "we made this game and there's two versions depending on which console you do or don't have" situation. The game really was ported to Saturn for cynical reasons but it was ported really early on it seems, and they got away with not just rehashing a year old title.

What they really should have done is not released the genesis version at all, so that the game would have been a Saturn exclusive from the beginning. But the game was ultimately designed to be the "last genesis Sonic". It was cool though that they offered two versions, one for the dying console and one for the new console, it reminds me of Twilight Princess being on the GC and the Wii.

I actually like Sonic 3D Blast. Not the best of the Sonic games, but I thought it was interesting. The game started development on the Mega Drive/ Genesis. I remember seeing the early screenshots in magazines, and there was some speculation that Sonic 3D Blast was going to be an RPG like Mario RPG. The Saturn port is great. Sonic Team actually made the 3D bonus stages themselves. But the game was far from something that could compete with Crash or Mario 64. Sonic R started as a formula 1 game for the Saturn. But TT turned it into a Sonic Racing game. Sonic Jam does have the 3D world. Which was probably Sonic Team showing that they could have made a 3D Sonic game. But focused on NiGHTS and Burning Rangers instead. Sonic was given a soft reboot on the Dreamcast with a different design.

Sonic games have a hard time selling 2M as multiplats. Sonic gets outsold by Kirby these days. Crash NSane Trilogy sold over 10 MILLION units, this is a number the Sonic series can only dream of.

Also, the Playstation brand globally, that is more associated with Crash, was much bigger than Sega. I don't doubt Sonic is more recognizable, but his supposed massive popularity is overrated by the reception he has in the US and a few other western countries, for example, he's not popular in Japan and Crash peaked higher in sales there than Sonic.

Never played Crash but I find this fucking hard to believe. Maybe you played the remastered and not the originals, which are also the predominant versions on youtube. The remasters of the SA are bad (polished turd), but the original on dreamcast was some of the worst animation I have ever seen in a game. I genuinely looked forward to the cutscenes just to see how much of a trainwreck they were. I never looked at it that way. But Sonic really wasn't well represented on the Saturn. I do think Sega of Japan wanted to put focus on other franchises for the console, while Sega of America president thought it was imperative to have a 32bit 3D Sonic that could compete with Mario 64. Mario 64 was an event in itself. Sony had a whole series of Crash ads designed to target Mario 64 and Sega wanted a flashy 3D Sonic for Christmas '96 to compete as well. But all they had was NiGHTs for Christmas 1996. Nintendo had Mario 64, Pilotwings 64, Mario Kart 64, Shadows of the Empire by December of 1996. Sony basically had all the third parties, and Crash.

Crash was like a combination of Chuck Jones and Tex Avery type of humor. I will admit, they did a good job animating Crash like a Looney Tunes character. A bit Tasmanian Devil in design. The original Trilogy had the most Looney Tunes influence. This unused animated intro and ending was interesting to me. The original Sonic is a bit weird, because there were like 2-3 official versions of the design. Sega of America contracted Greg Martin to do every Sonic US cover, just so they could all have a consistent look. Japan had their own version of Sonic. Plus there was the weird off-shoot Sonic media. Sonic Comics, ABC cartoon series, the version made for smaller kids and 'underground'. It was actually kind of hard to peg Sonic's personality. Crash during the Naughty Dog years was consistent. Crash was like partially lobotomised and an idiot.

Both had solid 9/10 games in their heydays.
Only Crash has any games worth playing from the last 10 years.
Sorry, Sonic.

That is absolutely true. I do remember the devs saying this. But Sonic was huge back then and popularized the whole mascot genre in the early 90's. I would say that characters like Crash are a more cynical type of mascot that makes fun of the trope of the genre. Self aware. But still a mascot character. It's no surprise that devs would point to Sonic. Mark Cerny produced the original Crash. Cerny was a producer on Sonic the Hedgehog 2 at Sega of America.

Mark Carny produced a lot of different mascot platforms. Crash, Spyro, Jak and Daxter, Rachet and Clank, Knack.

>Sonic had a Hollywood film

The problem with Crash was the rights. Universal Interactive owned Crash, not Sony. Which made Crash limited in what Sony could do with the character. Sega owns Sonic, and could put the character in cartoons, anime, comics, movies, make toys and license the character everywhere. Sony had to go through Universal to do it. But then Universal Interactive was taken over by Vivendi and Vivendi had the rights for a while. Not sure why they didn't push Crash beyond games. Activation-Blizzard fully owns Crash and Spyro now. Spyro was given its own animated series through Skylanders. Crash had a cameo in that series. Crash just was never big outside of games. Sonic has been quite successful here.

Crash barely has any. I'm sure there were at least toys and some merch made for Crash. But nowhere near the volume that Sonic produced. There are probably people out there who are fans of Sonic without ever playing the games. because there is a lot of alternative media. Crash mostly stays with-in the realms of games, and most people know the character fro m the "guy in a Crash suit" commercials.

in the late 80's and early 90's, Mario was at his peak of merchandise and non video game media. There were cartoons made for SMB2, SMB3 and SMW, a Hollywood movie, and tons of Mario merchandise. But After the movie flopped. Nintendo pulled back a bit on Mario saturation. Sonic's height of merchandising was 1991 to about 1994 during the Kalinske years. Sonic fizzled out a bit during the 32bit years. Came back with the Dreamcast and Sonic Adventure. Tom Kalinske was the driving force behind Sonic. The man worked at Mattel previously, re-popularized the Barbie brand in the 1970's, and oversaw the creation of HeMan and the Masters of the Universe. In the same that that he oversaw Sonic.

Yeah, it will be interesting to see how well the second movie does. I'm surprised Sega hadn't tried making a game based on the movie. Sonic hasn't had a big game in a while.
