Thinking about going to pic related this year as I live about a half hour from the venue and figure why not kill an afternoon. Has anybody here been to retro gaming conventions and what can I expect?

>> No.7872345

Should have added that "pic related" is referencing Toomanygames, which isn't obvious from the photo

>> No.7872525

I've been to a couple local (DFW) ones. Let's Play Expo, Texas Pinball Festival, and Retropalooza or something. The first one was pretty fun (neat guests like NWC winners and people who worked on The Wizard), decent free play arcade, computer, and console areas, and since the guy who runs it owns an original Sim City proto cart, that was playable. Apparently COVID killed it, possibly for good, so that's unfortunate.
The pinball one was cool, lots of pinball machines (I suck at pinball though), one of the Beavis and Butthead arcade cabs, stuff like that.
Retropalooza was alright, seemed maybe more focused on buying and selling, though.

Thanks for clearing that up. I had no idea what you were talking about. Now I know the name but Nothing else. Never even heard of it but pretty sure you can expect a lot of pic related and a could of BO that takes days to wash off.

>> No.7875617

My expectation upon learning about the concept was a floor full of collectors hawking scams and CRT autists also hawking scams, honestly. If it's not that, color me pleasantly surprised.

I go to 3 dutch ones every year, lots of pisspoor quality shit being sold at high prices but I keep going back and buying shit anyway, usually theyll throw you a deal if you buy more than one thing, and you get to touch the product so you can see if the quality meets your standards or not.

Seeing as all cons were canceled last year, im very interested to see how the ones back open this year will be. Like im just expecting all prices to be jacked the fuck up i wonder if its even worth going with the intent to buy anything.

>> No.7875667

>>7875653
Personally in my neck of the woods, its the cons that are not strictly gaming related that tend to have the best deals on games.

>> No.7875853

I’ve only been to a couple but this year I’m going to more and I made little /vr/ note card things so maybe we can get some new posters and fresh content here

>> No.7875965

I've gone to Portland Retro Gaming Expo the last few years (obviously not 20 or 21 because they were canceled due to COVID), avoid the big dealer tables, they're basically glorified resellers, they pay to have huge booths in the middle of the dealer's room but their selection is garbage and all overpriced, you're better off hitting up the smaller tables on the back wall of the convention floor and the secondary room they rent out for smaller tables, that's were the truly unique stuff at bargain prices can be found.

Also the guys looking to get out of the buisness who just want to sell as much as they can or even just give it away. Got a Commodore 64 for 5$ that way at a con in 2019.

I think the only game I've purchased from a con was some MVS cart that was a bit less than ebay after I offered him less than asking.

>> No.7878161

Been to a few in the past 10 or so years, you can get some bargains if you can haggle, I have seen a change over the years some of them not even bothering to offer a decent price and in some cases being way over Ebay prices.

Gaming wise, it can be mixed, some dont seem to try, a few games systems on some cheap-o LCD screens hooked up with cheap AV cables.
Smells wise, you do get some people that need to learn how to use deodorant, but stay away form any Smash brothers players and you will be fine.
One story I did hear about was one guy shit him self because he didn't want to stop playing.
You get bad and good, for the most part people that go to such things are ok.
You get a few community's at some that are into certain games or systems and some elitist types that are usually best ignored

You would have definitely loved it, the two cabinets in the back were busted but honestly that ended up being a good thing because we got to see Jose Cruz work his magic. There were a few clone cabinets loaded with fighting games but I'm sure Esteban the owner wants to find a few more legit cabs to add. And yeah the arcade was in the basement of the store.

So theres an arcade in the basement? or was that just for the opening. Either way I'll have to stop by this place soon.
How are the prices?

>damn, I heard about that a while ago and meant to go cause I'm kinda local.
Well like I said everyone knew each other there, they were all local to the NYC scene, so if you hung around enough you'll definitely become familiar with everyone.

>So theres an arcade in the basement? or was that just for the opening. Either way I'll have to stop by this place soon.
Yeah there's an arcade in the basement, it was $5 for an hour, $10 for two hours and $15 to play all day. And you definitely should stop by the place, it's right off the N train on 4th Ave.

>How are the prices?
They had three region-free N64s for $110, and the games were priced anywhere from $2 for some sports games no one wants to $35 for Twilight Princess Wii. I paid $45 for a pair of DK Bongos and I'm pretty happy with that.

The MiSTer seller guy I mentioned is from Pittsburgh so you wouldn't even be the furthest travelled if you went.
