is there a single first person shooter on PS1 that can remotely compete with Goldeneye? I finished this on 00 Agent for the first time this past week and I have to say this game is fully deserving of the praise it got, one of the best gaming experiences you can get from that generation.

No and I’ll even argue that GoldenEye’s variety of multiplayer modes bests anything that was on PC in 1997, including Quake. The only downside was no LAN capability.

Segregating yourself into a particular platform, not experiencing anything else and then calling everything else entirely inferior is a true signal of immaturity and delusional behavior. This is why you brought up the "growing up" flashback because you still think like the kid you were.
No wonder why nintendo fans always come up with threads like this. Self affirmation is a must to preserve the nostalgia bubble, it seems.

Medal of Honor

All good shit imo, but none of them have the same vibe as Goldeneye if that's what you're looking for.

I find Medal of Honor delivers a better single player than Goldeneye, but Goldeneye is definitely king in multiplayer.

It's kind of strange that the Goldeneye/Perfect Dark/Timesplitters formula never caught on despite all of those games being, well, fucking great.
For whatever reason, nobody else ever really tried to expand on, or even copy Rare/Free Radical's formula. It's kind of weird.

Could be done easily with Doom, Duke Nukem 3D, or Quake, just make a small weapon mod.

>being able to do rocket launcher only matches, etc.
Doesn't even need modifying any code, you could just make a level with nothing but rocket launchers in it. Then you had Rise Of The Triad, which has a dozen different kinds of rocket launchers, and supported online deathmatch, team deathmatch, and capture the flag, with up to 11 players.

You also had the Team Fortress mod for Quake, which combined capture the flag with differing player roles and classes.

>PC multiplayer at that time was very much just standard deathmatch with little variation.
How much variation did Goldeneye actually add with its multiplayer? It had regular deathmatch, team deathmatch, no actual capture the flag game in any traditional sense, you had Living Daylights which aside from being one of the best 007 movies was a mode where you picked up a flag and held it long enough to win, and had to survive against everyone else without being able to defend yourself.

You could select weapon sets and health levels, which was a nice enough addition, but nothing revolutionary, particularly given that quite a lot of Goldeneye's guns are functionally very similar to each other. It's a great game, and had good console multiplayer, but I don't see why it was so very revolutionary on the point of multiplayer.
