Maxed out Battle Mania 2. It's a fun game but I wish it had a 7 digit score. It's a bit too easy to max out while playing the game casually.

So what’s a good shoot’m up on PC for a galactic noob in the genre like me who has only played StarGunner? There were a few others I’ve played in arcades in the 90’s but I can’t for the life of me remember any of their names. I honestly kinda liked what they did with the ship upgrade system in StarGunner though and I’ve got no idea why it was never really a popular game (Raptor (Call of the Shadows) was way more popular back in the day on PC but I found it way too easy, at least StarGunner puts up quite a fight on Admiral difficulty).

Specially if there is no alternate shot to play with like a lock-on or secondary laser. it feels so passive and unexciting holding down autofire while auto-scrolling through gaps.

Crimzon Clover has a novice mode as does most Cave stuff on Steam.

There's many reasons the genre died
>unlike adventure games and platformers, shmups were basically unable to be converted to 3D.
On Rails Shooters like Starfox 64 and Sin And Punishment are probably the closest analogue to shmups in 3D and they're very different in design and philosophy.

>the consumer market at home trended towards lengthier, more content heavy and complex games
Shmups honestly get worse the longer they are, the only way to have a lot of content is to stuff in a lot of different ships or difficulty levels, and the only way to really add complexity is to add convoluted scoring and ranking systems.

>Arcades died everywhere but Japan and shmups died long before arcades themselves did in the US anyways
self explanatory

>Shmup devs have absolutely no business sense whatsoever
They didn't even -try- to adapt to the changing market. If anything they went out of their way to make dumb decisions. 16:9 widescreen HD displays are the obvious future of home entertainment systems? Stop making horizontally scrolling games altogether and make only 480p vertically scrolling arcade games, ignoring literally hundreds of millions of home consumers. Genre is looked down upon for its absurd difficulty curve? Start making games so legendarily difficult that less than 10,000 people on the planet can beat them. Then as if that nonsense wasn't enough, start making games for a specific niche of what has to be less than 1000 Japanese autists to score attack in. Imagine fucking shrinking your consumer base that much and thinking that's a viable business strategy. And yes I blame CAVE for the genre dying, it's thanks to them that horizontally scrolling games stopped being made and meme design like this became the face of the genre to normal people and turned them off from playing.

>> No.7867647

Way more nuanced take than mine. Makes sense, seems like a genre that you need to look for yourself. It's harder to fall into compared to, racing games for example, and everything you mentioned doesn't seem to help.

I went ahead and downloaded Tyrian 2000 and played a few levels, it’s definitely an interesting game. Love the music and art style, it’s very reminiscent of early 90’s arcade shmup’s.

Also I usually don’t really care much for lore and shit in this genre (I just wanna fucking blow things up), but I’m actually surprised that I’m quite enjoying reading the data cubes and getting hints on what to kill and blow up for secret levels and other bonuses. Plus some of them are actually interesting to read. Think I’m gonna enjoy this a lot, thanks for replying with your thoughts anon!

I decided to recently play some XOP, just for fun.
I played XOP Plus that I had on CD from some magazine and it was nice if somewhat difficult.
Then I remembered that that there were other versions, so I got them too.

XOP Ultra made some changes to the original game that Im not sure I can get behind.
The fact that Dals are now very transparent is a nice thing, lets you see bullets more clearly.
Changed music in Organic Area striked me as a surprise, it carries same general feel but it feels wrong for someone used to different one.
Velocity Canon change is a mixed bag, it is more useful now, but I still kinda preferred the pink fickoff lazer, maybe if it would aim to the sides with similar speed and with shot frequency the new one does it would be better.
Removal of weapon weight makes no difference to me as it didn't feel like it even mattered, no difference in speed at all to me.
Some changes like bumping up rocket power is nice.
Removing awards that unlock additional extra modes and making them available from the start feels like it removes the incentive to git good, but also lets people shit at the game enjoy them, mixed bag.
Splitting the levels between two separate courses was retarded, I liked to play them all in series and now I can't, what gives?
Also, there were some noticeable shifts in difficulty settings along the way with some easier options gone entirely from the new version, not sure if I approve.
All in all, a weird mutation of the game I was used to, but its still pretty much the same thing.

Then I checked out XOP Black Ultra, and it was a disappointment in comparison to previous game all around. What happened?

I mostly find shmups the most fun to replay after a 1cc, other types of games I'm usually done with after one. honestly it feels like too much work to learn a new game at points.

back in arcade days you'd go and play a limited amount of credits, $2, $4, $5? Pissing your money away would motivate you to change cabinets after 40 minutes or so...restart syndrome wasn't as bad unless you had severe OCD, autism and lots of money to burn.

today there are a few autism bois grinding the same stage or 1 minute sections for hours and hours on emulators, then complain how insufferable the whole genre is... well no shit, get a life and stop playing like a robot

Anyone have a good shmup to recommend for iPadOS? I’m going to be stuck on my iPad for a week but I’ll have my Xbox Wireless Controller with me. I don’t mind paying a one-off purchase price to play the game but Pay2Win shit can fuckoff. I’m a big fan of the genre but I’m a little rusty so while I’ll gladly accept a challenge I don’t want something that basically has 99% of your screen covered in enemy bullets (i.e. cave). Any input greatly appreciated fellow anons.

It's probably not possible under "competitive" Twin Galaxies type rules, but if you play with extends on you literally just spend infinite time on the first or second stage and get infinite lives killing tiny enemies while flying up. Not hard to do but just a waste of time.
