This game is an example of a genre mastering game. Tight corge gameplay and novel mechanics. Released in 1997 and never topped in 2D action/platformer.
And then dark souls did it in 3d.

For all the abilities to use and loot to find the game is pretty easy and the more you discover the easier it gets to the point where it's a walking simulator, a walking simulator with lots of backtracking.

It has excellent graphics and sound but this is not a good game. It's praised by casuals that prefer a bunch of bells and whistles over a well designed level.

If you play the game with a guide just to get the best ending you played the game wrong. The best part is exploring the castle and taking in the atmosphere. After you beaten the game, and want more you look up what to do. But its not a requirement to do if you are satisfied. I was blown away the first time i unlocked the inverted castle.

I thought it was pretty wild too. But after about 5 minutes I just turned into a bat and fly past everything. There were no new sights to see and it was no longer possible to lose a fight with all the items I had gotten. I learned it didn't even matter that I skipped all those battles since Dracula also had no challenge. I felt nothing but disappointment at the end of the game.

>> No.7855839

>>7855815
What do you mean with a fucking guide. If you explore the full castle you're bound to stumble upon the required items to reach the true end even if you're a slobbering retard that didnt get the hints all over the place telling you you can save richter. Your experience being a stupid kid doesnt translate to everyone's experience. The inverted castle is literally the same thing only with only 3 music tracks and you spend 99% of time in bat form getting assfucked/stunned all the way down the room by fucking skeletons. Inverted castle is ass and all the boss fights of the inverted castle fucking blow. They should have put the new enemies in the regular castle.

SotN is great but it's not the masterpiece people claim. Suffers from item bloat. When the level design of a Metroidvania entices you to explore ever nook and cranny but has so many bloated and unnecessary weapons and items it makes exploring start to feel dull. "Cool, I traveled this path to find this weapon I have no intention of ever using". This pretty much applies to all igavanias and it's why I prefer metroidvanias that don't bloat up the game with items and rpg mechanics and instead offers sort of a "less is more" approach like Super Metroid and Environmental Station Alpha.

>> No.7857164

>>7855678
Visuals, visual variety and music is literally all SotN has going for it. As a game of its type it's simple as fuck. The only truly dynamic area in the entire game that isn't just ramps and platforms is the clock tower.

>> No.7857175

>>7857163
Extremely based opinion. How many times in SotN do you find a secret that just leads to some healing item that you already have 10 of or could just buy at the shop if you wanted to? Game is overrated and other games in the genre have far surpassed it.

>> No.7857759

>>7857736
You don't even need the best ones. The stat growth from finding the obvious ones outpaces the stat growth of most enemies you find. In a proper metroidvania game exploration is required to get enough treasure to keep up with the increasingly dangerous enemies. In SotN the more you explore the more boring the game gets as it starts to matter less and less how well you play.

I always felt like this was the most interesting one in that it's the only one that tried to blend SotN gameplay with the classic series' aesthetic, rather than the coked-up feel of the Rondo/Symphony continuum or the increasing anime style of Harmony and onward, plus the dissolution of the traditional subweapon system starting with Aria. Really just getting away from anything resembling Castlevania combat, not that SotN made you use a whip or anything.

and yeah, the inverted castle in SotN is kind of cool in theory, but in practice what happens? by that point that you're reaching a power ceiling of sorts (a game-long problem that you could kind of ignore if the game ended earlier) and just cruising from boss to boss, you blow through the thing in a quarter of the time it took the first half, so challenge? no. conceptually/aesthetically it's no more than padding, if you went to a museum and every painting had another copy hanging upside-down above it would you be amazed?

Has its flaws but it's overall a good game. 32 bit systems were imposing 3D as a standard for videogames, and SoTN took advantage of the very first wave of nostalgia summing up all the previous chapters of the series in a sidescrolling RPG, combining its cozy gothic atmosphere with the Metroid gameplay. By me this was an unsung killer application for the first Playstation.
