And that's assuming that all or most of those emulator writers are going to be alive to update them or that another generation is going to be able to re-re-translate all those game for even newer computers that will make these look like stale bags of chips.
I think we may be headed for an inevitable extinction of many games well within 50 years.

Great to have around to not have to spend hundreds of dollars on old carts. I did grow up with Super Mario RPG as a kid and still have my copy and manual but I'll be fucked if I'm gonna pay 600 dollars for just a cart of Earthbound or Chrono Trigger.

Also despite some stuff not working, for 3D games I find emulation outright superior. Running the games in widescreen with quintuple resolution and anti-aliasing and any number of other improvements usually makes them look amazing, especially the Sony systems and Gamecube/Wii

Why not?

>for zoomers
Make sure you play on real hardware at some point just to 'see what it was like' but for the most part just emulate. DO NOT buy games, use a flash cart. It's a totally different experience but you'll need a time machine to truly "get it". If I were 22 years old today I would not give two shits about Final Fantasy 7 or any of the "classics" up to a point. You have so many options now, it doesn't make sense to be expected to like FF3/6. It's about as dry as reading hamlet in comparison.

Otherwise emulate. If you can get a game for a cup of coffee I say collecting is good too. Spending your entire pay on obscure shit you never liked or even lived on the same continent as it was released on as a kid doesn't make any sense to me especially if it can be played with ODE. I've been rebuilding a sentimental collection and some odds and ends from the wii era I never got around to. $10 is the limit for most items (picked up demon souls for $15 the other day tho just because I like the game).

I'm not a zoomer so I wouldn't know. I made the assumption based on how good the derived works are. It seems only logical to think that Mortal Kombat 1 on the Sega Genesis wouldn't be as mind blowing to a Zoomer today as Guilty Gear or Blaze Blue. If you can enjoy it for what it is that's fine, but there is no replication of context for some games plan and simple. I rented Resident Evil 1 on PlayStation the weekend it came out. You cannot replicate that what so ever. You have no idea what it was like to experience that dog jumping out of the fucking window and talking about it with all your friends at school.

WRONG because I also played that for the first time a decade later and liked it quite a bit. Granted the school yard part is true.

Also I'm not a zoomer. I just didn't have a PS1 growing up and didn't go back and play those games until years later.

Effort. For most people it's way easier to download a rom from any number of sites and play it on their already-configured emulator than to deal with mame's autism of trying to match the correct emu version with the correct rom. Doesn't help that mame devs don't care about performance so if you're on a toaster you'll first have to research which version has eliminated most of the bugs but is still playable at full speed. I personally just use FBNeo because I'm a lazy bum and it has all the games I care about, but I recon a lot of people just haven't heard about it.
