13 in 1999 here. You are old. Just not the oldest.
We're both around that age where you really start to notice more all the time how most everyone is younger than you except for maybe doctors and court judges who tend to skew a lot close to retirement age.
I'm an engineer and everyone from my team is fresh out of college now except me. Have to remind myself sometimes because I got so used to being young and now I'm a good deal older than the average working parents I encounter.

Setting the precedent that we need to keep adding newer systems to count as retro was a terrible idea, yeah. I don't care if the year is 2060, being nostalgic about any time period later than the 1990s just doesn't make sense.

I really don't see it going any further except the wii at most. But that's just an upgraded gamecube. Anything HD will never be retro until 4K (or crazier) is the majority of every household which I still doubt will happen this decade because 4K is a meme. 7th gen is when we got more PC level games on home consoles, standardized online play. Subscription services became more common. Consoles became an even better entertainment machine than just DVDs. Anything XBOX 360 - onwards is probably remastered/ported or remade to current and previous gen consoles. Retro really stops at 6th and Wii until there's a big leap in gaming and general consumer tech. And even then. CRTs to LCDs will always be an infinitely (and I mean it literally) bigger leap than HD LCDs to slightly better HD LEDs.

I'm with you except its 2000s for me. The 2000s represents the decline of the old era of gaming. The 1990s was the peak. It's why you have zoomers saying they wanted to grow up then. Now there doesn't really seem like there's any reason to play on consoles except artificial limitations and restrictions made the by the companies. Society in general just feels kinda stale now. Maybe if there was another war or something it'd be cool. Majority of the big movies coming out are reboots, sequels or in a long running series. Not a lot of new IPs. All the good games nowadays try to be retro. From 2010 onwards, it's been the modern era and it'll stay that way until the fantastic is common. I don't think VR or 4K will be it though.

My best guess is Zaxxon. But I was so young I don't remember. Both my parents played video games when we were young kids and I was exposed to a handful from an early age. My dad had his arcade games and shooters and my mom loved her MUDs and loved the early Zeldas.

The earliest game I remember seriously playing and getting into is probably Zelda 1, mostly because my mom played it so much. We had those early Atari consoles briefly, but I still have the NES I grew up with.

Literally can't find a pic of it.

So I was in preschool in 1997, and I live in the San Francisco bay area (so a lot of tech assholes) as a result everyone in my class had to do these typing exercises every month. It was this retarded ass game where you play as a penguin cop and I had to solves a crime (stolen ice cream I believe) and to find who's connected I had to line up a bunch of penguins and try to type all the letters on their hats in over 5 seconds. If the penguin has ice cream cone crumbs under their hat we arrested them.

Now here's the weird part. There was this woman penguin, and if she had crumbs under her hat her hair would fall out as it's a wig and she'd get arrested. Between this and another unrelated factor I think I developed a slight fetisch for bald women.

In fairness, Fortnite would probably be fun if you were 5 to 10 years old. I used to watch my nephew play Minecraft and think that it would have been pretty great to have what is essentially a virtual lego kit to play with. Just because you don't find it engaging as an adult doesn't mean that it isn't great for kids. Besides, the kids playing Fortnite today will develop their own taste for vidya as time goes on.

You didn't say 1992 until now so maybe don't expect people to be telepaths in the future, retard. Here's someone who was 12 with a kid in the 90s i.e the actual subject originally discussed. Point is you could have a kid at anywhere from age 12 to age 90, so having kids who were a certain age when you played video games with them has nothing to do with your own age. You aren't nostalgic for an era. You're nostalgic about a phase in your kids' lives. By your attempted logic here having grandkids who turn that same age in the 2040s will mean people who are 35 now are too young to appreciate a decade that isn't even here yet.

I have three distinct memories of my earliest vidya experiences.

1. When I was 4, I had a cavity in one of my teeth. After getting my filling, my dad took me to a bar in the same strip mall with him and they had a Super Mario Bros cabinet there. I didn’t actually play the game, I was just jostling the stick and hitting the buttons while biting my numb tongue.

2. With my dad again, different bar, still 4, much later at night. Don’t know the exact circumstances, but it was kind of a harder party atmosphere, lots more people and loud music. They had an Indiana Jones arcade cabinet there and once again, I was just jostling the stick and pushing buttons “playing” the game. No idea where my dad was, but I remember some chick coming up to me and asking me what I was doing, and I was explaining the game to her.

3. At my dads friends house during a party, friends kids were a couple years older than me. They had an NES and finally I got to play for real. The game was Top Gun, and I can still hear little Greg trying to tell me what to do to land one the carrier.

My dad isn’t even an alcoholic or anything. Just completely irresponsible and kind of shitty at certain parental duties. I’m lucky I was never kidnapped or worse. Still gets me angry to this day when I think about it, especially now that I’m a father myself.

It was either SMB, SkiFree, or Chip's Challenge. I remember having a pad of fold-it notes that I wrote every password down on, one to a page, and eventually I got to around 120-130 but couldn't progress further. Bummer.

Pic related. It was the first game my best friend got with his PS on his birthday. We spent like entire evening messing with game and drooling over pretty cars.
