Are you currently playing any of Lara's games? Discuss current adventures, favorite games, levels, best versions, mods, fan levels, etc.

You can now play Unfinished Business (TR1 add-on) and The Golden Mask (TR2 add-on) on PS1/emulation thanks to fan port. The Lost Artifact (TR3) is still getting ported and will be release soon-ish.

I just beat the Saturn version of TR1 again the other day. There still isn't any other game that absolutely nails the feeling of exploration and isolation that the first game has.

With all of the indieshit that has been released over the years I am surprised no one has done a Tomb Raider style environmental block based 3D platformer.

The first Tomb Raider is piss easy if you get all of the secrets, if you're paying attention the game throws items at you like crazy. The last time I beat it I think I had like 35 of each medkit, 60 shotgun shells, 6,000 uzi rounds, and I don't even remember how many magnum rounds. I'm kind of autistic about saving ammo in videogames though, and a lot of the enemies in Tomb Raider can be cheesed by just standing on a platform and shooting them with your pistols.

Using the Magnums on that fag Pierre Dupont was absolutely worth it though. Fuck that guy.

The first game was 100% old ruins, the second game ruined it by throwing you in the middle of Venice (herp derp people having gunbattles in the middle of a major European city in broad daylight) , an oil rig, and then the wreck of a sunken ocean liner (which, to be fair, was a pretty based set of levels since the ship was mostly upside-down at the bottom of the ocean). Then you had a Tibetan monastery and some otherworldly shit.

TR3 has you sneaking into Area 51 (wtf?) and killing American security guards who are just doing their jobs, as well as running around killing stuff in London.

Chronicles has some faggy shit where Lara is an art thief in a Matrix outfit for some reason.

Then we had The Last Revelation, which was back to Egypt.

Basically, what I am trying to say is, Tomb Raider games are best when you're exploring ancient ruins, not wandering around modern city streets in the middle of the day shooting thugs.

Guys, I would like to discuss something.
I don't know if anyone here thinks or thought the same.
Don't you see a clear difference between the first tomb raiders and TR3-TR4-TRC? I'm talking about the graphics, not the story or enemies. In particular, I don't like the new realistic or very well defined elements of the scenarios that looked so "realistic".
Take for example the water. In TR1-TR2 is just that, fucking h20, but in the last games, the water had shadows, some parts were green, maybe dark... It happened with all things, scenarios, enemies, passages... I had to use flares one after another cause sometimes i couldnt see nothing but darkness. This wasn't in the first games.

Did you play on PC or PS1?

They tweaked the engine for TR3 and developed primarily for PS1 instead of PC so it has a different color palette and makes better use of the PS1 hardware. I personally love how much darker it looks, the more atmospheric lighting. I tried looking at PC footage and by comparison it seems to lack that atmosphere.

The only levels I absolutely hated were the floating islands because they stuck out too much and didn't feel like they belonged to the same game I was playing earlier.
The area 51 stuff makes sense. Why wouldn't the US military find the artifact and use it for testing? It's just an unfortunate circumstance that it is also being guarded by a bunch of yes man grunts. I liked the london levels honestly, especially the subway section. I don't get why it receives so much hate.
Chronicles was never meant to be released, Eidos basically forced Core to release another Tomb Raider game even they didn't want to, so of course playing it is going to be like having a loud, wet fart in a middle of a crowd. Just an overall really bad experience that has no substance.

I understand your point and in fact, it's true. It makes sense, and I agree with you, but as a player, as someone who has to control the situation, it's difficult to move around, look for secrets and items or stay alert to not get caught by surprisedly some bad guys.

Subjectively, I don't understand why to change the two first game's atmosphere (that was fine, and you were in the middle of some old subterranean ass ruins), by all realistic graphics enhance of the later games.

May we change some scenarios cause of “how they will be irl”? I don't think so. Consider please my picrel, that's from Tomb Raider: Unfinished Business. Lara is somewhere in an Egyptian desert, it's dark (at night) cause you look up and there is nothing more than stars, you look at the background, and it is also dark. BUT, there are some parts that are illuminated, can you see it? These are nothing more than some friendly clues given by the devs that are pointing at “some areas that, maybe, you can consider visiting”.
In game, these “clues” could be interpreted by moonbeams.

Now take this scenario and port it to some >TR3 engine. These would be all pitch black because we are at night.

TR1 had lots of ultra bright areas even though there were no light sources because 100% of the lighting was static.

They introduced dynamic lighting in TR2 with the flares (as well as muzzle flashes from Lara's weapons), but then they made a ton of areas super dark so that you would have to rely on the new flares mechanic. Different anon. I was the one defending the darker lighting.

Well you also have to keep in mind that at the time TR1 was cutting edge for early 3D but also had a limited engine, also ran on Saturn weaker hardware, etc. so it wasn't just static lighting but also everything being so blocky etc impressive for early gen but by mid gen 3D evolved rapidly, graphics were a huge selling point and people expected better lighting and more detailed polygonal environments. Eidos had to react or lose market share. Even with those tweaks to the engine, TR sequels couldn't really keep up graphically and were heavily criticized for just being more of the same or starting to look dated, when you had games like MGS, Silent Hill or Soul Reaver coming out.

Here's a fan level that's REALLY dark, and makes TR3 look brightly lit. Really emphasizes the horror atmosphere.

Emulate the PS1 versions of Tomb Raider, TR2, and TR3. Play the Dreamcast versions of The Last Revelation and Chronicles (if you can't get ahold of a Dreamcast than just emulate the PS1 versions). Skip Angel of Darkness, it's a turd.

If you feel like putting some work in you can get the PC versions running on modern hardware with fanmade tools, but emulating the PS1 versions is piss easy.

Taking too many screencaps of those levels but I love the big natural areas/dark temples atmosphere. The level design is so much better when they open things up. It's what disappointed me about the reboots; they turned into open worlds but the actual "platforming puzzle" layouts are so small and short, artificially isolated from one another instead of one big whole.

AOD is a turd. They tried to reboot the series and take it into a darker/edgier direction but it just fell flat. The mechanics were extremely "videogame-y" (Oh, I can't push this thing to progress, but literally right around the corner is a thing that makes me strong enough to be able to push that thing), and the story is pants on head retarded.

That said, if you want to give it a shot, by all means go for it. There are weirdos out there who enjoyed it. There were some novel additions (exploring non-level areas, talking to NPCs, a second playable character), but there are like 20 different better Tomb Raider games you could be playing instead. I will admit that Lara's AOD character model is second only to her milfmode Underworld look in terms of bonerability, though.

Chronicles was slapped together and feels like four glorified expansion packs on a single disc. It's mostly just "more of the same" classic Tomb Raider gameplay, but if you like classic Tomb Raider gameplay than that's not really a bad thing.

The classic Tomb Raider series was all about taking the exact same gameplay, on the exact same engine, adding some new features, and releasing a sequel. It's a perfect example of 'iterative design'. A lot of reviewers shit on the franchise for doing this (PCXL literally just copy pasted their TR3 review with new screenshots as a joke when they reviewed The Last Revelation), but if you were someone who really enjoyed classic Tomb Raider gameplay than it was appreciated that they didn't make a bunch of changes in the sequels to fuck everything up. Chronicles fits in with this philosophy perfectly.

The Saturn version has a better draw distance and much nicer water effects. The Playstation version has a slightly better average framerate.

I prefer the Saturn version since the quads/triangles difference means the textures aren't as fucked up as they are on the Playstation, and I'd also recommend the Saturn version because its controller is better, but honestly outside of those differences its the same game. It didn't get formalised until Eidos marketing figured out how to run the campaign for the game and decided to turn "random model for one-off gig" to "fake it till you make it prestigious seat of official model".

Lara Croft kills four people in the first game, all of which are people who are actively helping someone who is trying to destroy human civilization, and who have attacked her first. The first time she fights one of those people, she doesn't even kill him, she just injures him and then knocks him out.

Tomb Raider is always at its best when it's Lara Croft exploring ancient ruins, with a heavy atmosphere of isolation, not traipsing through modern cities nonchalantly murdering hundreds of people. This is why TR1 and The Last Revelation are generally considered to be the best in the series.

aside from nevada (and even then its arguable), I dont think she kills anybody who doesnt deserve it

in 2 she kills mafia cultists
in london she kills evil mercenaries and mutant thugs

Anyway, I like 3 best because it gives a mix of dungeons, city, and outdoors. Outdoors levels are my favorite, but I enjoy the other two.

Yeah I'm not buying it either, it got trashed by boomer critics but Carpenter was a big deal with horror fans and video clubs, the original produced by Hawks was also well known, X-Files was the biggest show of the mid 90's (probably also why TR3 had Area 51) and its first season had a Thing homage/ripoff episode, Extermination was released a couple years after and it was a Thing ripoff, the game adaptation a year after that, etc. Lara literally references The Fly so the devs knew their 80's gory creature horror. Also game development is a team effort, even if one dev denies the influence (source?), it's always possible it was a conscious influence for other devs. Capcom denied for years the influence of Alone in the Dark on RE because of legal reasons.

Underworld is... weird. In a good way, but still weird. It's a combination of three different projects and ideas for the franchise coming together, breeding a game that tries to be all those three in the same time:
- linear progression of everything Legend set up: high pace, lots of action, lots of combat, continuation of the plot (something Core games never really did) and reappearing characters in the same plot as previous game... and generally, strong (for TR) emphasis on plot, rather than locations and escapism
- plans to "go back", but not to roots, instead to just general feeling Core-era games offered, based on feedback from older playerbase after Legend AND Anniversary
- Anniversary fucking things up royally, forcing Crystal to incorporate the game they never planned to have into their ongoing project, with half the manpower they were originally promised, since it got tied to Anni and then thrown at them with their ideas in the final stretch of development.
The result is the most Core of LAU games and in the same time the most non-Core of them, if it makes any sense. The kill-count is especially funny, because if you cut the two levels that consists of fighting Amanda's goons and nothing else, the count will go to 15 (could be lower, can't recall if there are any other encounters with humans other than the poachers in Mexico and a tiny outfit of mercs)

They had Area 51, because that was the most fantastical place they were able to think out in States, while Eidos marketing told them they should put at least part of the game in the US for better sales. It's really that simple.

I couldn't help myself and download the Unfinished Business package for the PSX. This level was batshit insane. I love Egypt but this was way too much. Nearly burned myself playing through it despite enjoying the adventure.

I checked the stats against the ones provided in Stella's website and it seems I got 10 additional kills plus 7 more items? And I did not the items from the last secret (3 or 4 I think?) - Core Design can go suck a dick for filtering that one out so quickly for players taking a logical decision and missing it out with no chance of going back.

In an alternate reality Lara Croft is real and spends her downtime bouncing on my dick.

In other news I started playing through Chronicles for the first time. I'm up to the Ireland levels now. The Roman streets/colosseum levels felt like classic Tomb Raider, and I liked them a lot. The Russian warehouse was mediocre, and the Submarine levels sucked. The deep dive level was a cool idea, but it's way too short. It should have been much larger, and without the braindead AI enemy submarines. I know the game was thrown together by a bunch of devs who were overworked and completely burnt out by that point from making a new Tomb Raider game every year for five years, and it really feels like the sub levels seem to be where they just started not giving a shit.

Getting a hint of 16 year old Lara's tit in the cutscene for the Ireland level was a nice bit of fanservice, and the few minutes of what I played seemed pretty atmospheric (at least, as atmospheric as you can get when your entire level is made up of Tomb Raider blocks). I'll probably play some more tonight and see if I can finish the last two episodes.
