You should play Draft-Excluder and Ultimate Doom The Way id Did. You would enjoy them. Both continue the ep4 style, but go into lot more challenging direction than Sigil. Also play Base Ganymede Complete, the best wad for Doom 1.

Every actor in Quake is an entity running functions. Every entity uses the same amount of fields (variables). Fields can be float, vector, string, or function. Some fields are necessary and used by the engine, others are only used in the QC sandbox and can be removed/modified/added. There are also global variables, some of which (like entity "self" and "other") are automatically set by the engine.
There are various builtin functions to do basic things like trace from one point to another, and you can also define your own functions. The engine runs entities' .think function on a timer defined by their .nextthink, and their .touch function every time they collide with another entity. Under what circumstances they collide depends on their .solid type. How they move depends on their .movetype.
For players, the engine automatically runs the QC functions PlayerPreThink before physics and PlayerPostThink after physics every frame. These handle reading the players' input, checking for liquid, etc.

You'll want to use the FTEQCC compiler. Its not just for the FTE engine, it has extra features but can still compile vanilla-compatible code.

I like Revenants, they're tall goofy skeletons, I love their walk cycle and the outrageous haymakers they throw. They're also excellent pressure monsters. Archviles are up there too, they're absolute bastards but they bring a lot to a fight.

Most hated? Probably Chaingunners. I appreciate hitscanners but Chaingunners are still a fucking nuisance. I bully the shit out of them.

Doom 4 monster designs were kinda weird, and Doom Eternal's designs are too busy with all that chitin and shit

They're like pieces in a puzzle game where they can be used differently, so it always depends on the situation

I like the Carcass and Cybermanc's attacks and how they handled the Arachnotron
Archvile's design is meh but i think how they did the former humans is also a bit lame
Marauder isn't that bad, even if a bit overhyped but him and DL never hit that true "Doomguy mirror match" area or whatever, which i think also undermines Doomguy's power level and Hell's
Hell Guards were underrated because some of their attacks were unique, even if they looked like fantasy MMORPG golem rock creatures
Most of the bosses in general were alright

In all seriousness, the map is really flat and teleporter mazes are almost never fun especially when only one wall texture is used for the entire map. A lot of the map is also just plain right angles, and you encounter every enemy pretty much identically as well. You need to add more variety, basically.

I would say level design started to go down the shitter around 2009.
It's been talked before but comparing F.E.A.R 1 to F.E.A.R 2,people always say the AI got a downgrade while it was actually the level design that destroyed the enemy AI.

I remember back in early 2010s there were parodies mocking how much worse FPS games got in terms of map design.

Of course,you always need to find a middle ground,not even the most hardcore fans really like Turok 2 maps.

I've been playing IF and loving it so far, especially the map design. Glad it's getting an expansion. I suppose one slight gripe is enemy variety and since the game does feature reloading for the SMGs, shotgun and the pistol a counter for how many are in the mag would've been nice but not a huge deal. Also mines / duke pipebomb equivalent would've been nice.

I initially played a bit of the pirated version at my friend's house but we decided to buy the game to support it.

On anudda note since it's blogpost time :
Played some Duke 3d's Duke it out in DC today, specifically Smithsonian Terror. It was really neat how they made it feel like an actual museum within the confines of Duke 3d but unlike the FBI building the level didn't flow very nicely and I ended up doing long repeats of the same hallway over and over until I finally found they way forward from the Ocean Life exhibit. Oh well, still really liked the design.

Also started Shadow Warrior with a sourceport. Even with mouseaim the game feels substantially more disorienting and fiddly than Duke 3d.

Lo Wang voicelines are gold though, like ''you're half the man you used to be''after slicing a guy in half with the katana and the gore effects look hella sick. The uzi sprites also look good.

Not a super concrete idea on which modern retroshooter I'd like to get continuation since I don't know of that many projects.

Discretion of the player; doing it after a really rough fight (ESPECIALLY if you haven't beaten the map yet and don't have good knowledge of where secrets/ambushes are) doesn't seem very scummy or cheaty, and keeps the tension in the game alive.
Even decino (guy on YT who people talk about here sometimes about being particularly good at the game) uses a setting in PRBoom+ which shows sector lines that are tagged as secrets, which can be seen as scummy as some since you're kind of "revealing" the secret if you come close to the wall and look at your map.
Just don't reload your save whilst alive because a fight didn't "turn out right" unless you're going for some kind of world record pace on DSDA. That's some pussy shit.

I like RLNDGM the most so far. It's the same soundfont James Paddock used in his bandcamp release of Sigil https://jamespaddock.bandcamp.com/album/sigil-the-midi-soundtrack
It sounds kinds flat here but it sounds way better when you play it in game, I just tested it.

RLNDGM is good because most midis are designed for the basic Windows midi, and this has a similar instrument balance but it sounds richer. Using a soundfont on a midi that wasn't made for it is like using a gameplay mod on a vanilla map. Anyway jere are some other good ones

Musyng Kite is my favorite hi-def one. It's over 1gig. Orpheus is another big one. Musyng Kite was my favorite until I discoverd that new sc-55 soundfont, and that was my fav until I discovered RLNDGM

PrBoom 2.5.1.4 comes with its own soundfont, which Going Down's midis were designed for, so I copy/pasted that soundfont into PrBoom 2.6

For DOOM 1 I played all maps in Knee Deep in the Dead on UV without mid level saves, just felt more satisfying that way. For Shores of Hell and Inferno I think I started at some point saving when I got a keycard or something like that like got past a hard fight.

I don't remember super well but I faintly recall DOOM 2 being roughly somewhere between Knee Deep in the Dead and Shores of Hell in terms of overall difficulty so it's most of the time not too rough to play withouf mid level saves or just saves at keycards / keycard doors.

For DOUK I tried to do no mid-level saves but Duke 3d really loves cheap af ambushes and instadeath things so I do keep a quicksave system for that game too. Same with Shadow Warrior.

Afaik almost all maps official and custom alike are implicitly balanced around pistol starts due to being tested like that during mapping, so it can generally be expected to work out.

Saving is more player and map dependent. If a map is very long and/or has gameplay design that doesn't account for it, such as a boring and repetitive segment that leads to a super difficult fight, you might have an unreasonably bad time if you never save.

IMO Plutonia has the type of challenge where pistol starting and not saving fits like a glove. It has this constant "fuck you, player" attitude but the learning experience to progress through trial and error is very rewarding. I've never run into a pwad that has a similar feel. Might help somewhat, though, that it's a "standard" known challenge that's motivating to test your skill against, not any random mapset that gets played by ten people and then never talked about again next year because there are too many releases.

How fire from barrel explosives and mancubi shots is rendered in GZDoom? Is there a way to simplify these effects? In larger maps my potato rig (low-end of 2010) get raped whenever mancubi continuously spam or a dozen of barrels explode simultaneously. I installed LZDoom and it runs like an athlete on a verge of shitting himself. Running HDest with Running Late 2 if wad selection is important.

I've been lagging behind on my own schedule, but I've been hung up on getting this particular upgrade right for Kustam. Originally it was an additional projectile you fired with the hitscan (I forgot to update the pickup text), but that turned out to be annoying because you'd hitscan a weak monster and the projectile would most likely whiff the others. So you'd have to often shoot the floor to get the most of it. That's stupid.

So now it's a hitscan. And it only triggers if you shoot an actor, which means you can get away with shooting barrels and triggering the flashbang effect, but that's still technically a harder target to shoot than the fucking floor.
I'm hoping the little HUD element isn't too imposing, screen space is fucking tight. You can also see the heat system recharging the flashbang and the medi-tool a little here as well. I was going to make it so you have to recharge the super kick this way as well but I'm not certain if that'd be wise in the long run, seeing as it takes a moment to charge the kick anyway.

Also, seeing as the medi-tool takes longer to recharge and requires you to hit some dudes to start building it up, I'm gonna boost its healing and ammo gaining properties. I've been considering adjusting heat gain in general too.

Finished Ion Fury today. Really good game, looking forward to the expansion. I watched the expansion trailer and was a bit worried that they didn't show off any new weapons except for the gas grenade launcher (and I guess the bike / hovercraft ?). Hopefully new enemy types and new bosses, I thought the bosses in IF were alright but re-using all of them except the airship as bosses? Ehh, better than not having a boss at all I guess but hopefully they can have new enemies and weapons for the expansion...

That said, *really* good game, felt like I got my money's worth out of the game and probably will do another playthrough at some point.

I actually really think I like the Sergeants the best out of doom monsters but they're not demons so I would say that the Agitating Skeletons aka the Revenants are good. Something about those bony boys with their punching and homing missiles that makes them a tough but fair opponent unlike say barons that are a joke in the outdoors but really unfair in tight spaces and very spongy.

Though a honorary mention goes out to the Imps, they look good and especially love their death sprite when you shoot them and their stomach rips open and you see blood, guts and bits of bone sticking out. Sick.

Lost Souls. They are annoying, they don't feel satisfying to kill, they body block you despite being complete wimps.

Is there a way to have different weapons use the same ammo, but with each one having their own ammo pool?
Like for example I have a rifle and a chaingun, both using the same cartridge, but since the rifle can't take belts and the chaingun can't take magazines I can't just take the 300 bullets from the chaingun and use them in the rifle.
HOWEVER, there are ammo boxes around where I can fill both guns up.

I see a lot of the level design as being strongly derived from the kind of typical Cacoward bait where a bunch of strongly contrasting colors are employed in large dark or dark-ish arenas.
