Welcome to The Garage, a thread where fans of racing vidya can discuss their favourite arcade, sim, kart, and any other kinds of racing games. If you’re looking for something new to play or are new to the genre ask other Anons for recommendations and remember to gear up and have fun.

The previous thread suffered an engine failure: >>7751354

Is there ANY hope WHATSOEVER in trying to beat the Escudo with anything but another Escudo, much less a car built up by yourself? As mediocre as the AI drives in road races, in rallies it'll absolutely kick your ass, and in this race it pilots the game's quickest car on top of things.

That is good to hear as the game truly is a great one. I'm personally of the opinion that every single open world except those made by angel studios sucks. The world design they had going is so...lets say smooth where no matter what route you plot it flows smooth and fast whereas most other open world racing games feel like they made a cool world and then went "fuck, how do we make this fun to drive?" and most failed. This doesn't mean NFSU2, world racing or any of the others are bad games themselves,. just that their course design is the weakest point whereas the angel studio games this is their strongest point. Even smuggler's run which is a loose racing game is well designed.

I get what you mean.
I think the earliest open world racers had the devs go from making simple tracks for the last games to having to build giant cities, so they probably just experimented and fucked up, and the novelty meant they could get away with it. The NFSU2 map looks like they drew some random patterns and made them raceable afterwards, and the MW one looks like they just scaled that up. There are no straight roads anywhere, and it feels like random tracks overlaid one over one another.
The MC ones look like actual cities instead, which seems to work a lot better

Most bike games are sims like Tourist Trophy. There is that totally-not-road rash game though, Road Redemption. No idea how good it is as i'm a 4 wheel or jet engine kinda racer.

I'm only really qualified to talk about PS2 era games.
>extreme g
Wipeout but with bikes. I highly recommend 3, avoid XGRA. I haven't played the first 2.
>riding spirits 2
Gran Turismo but with bikes. The first one is very budget, but the sequel has a lot of bikes and tracks. The physics are very simplistic though.
>speed kings
Knockoff of Burnout, but you can also punch other riders like in Road Rash.
>motogp ultimate racing technology
The PC/Xbox series by THQ. Very comfy to play, with some neat unlockable options to change the way the graphics look. In the first game you could play with the game in wireframe or cel-shaded mode, in the second that was for replays only, and they took it out in the third. The third game has soem fantasy bikes and street circuits though. Namco made the PS2 MotoGP games, which are much more like arcade cabinets.

Motocross Madness for consoles.

This is funny because the game does have a PC port, but PS2 emulation of it is superior. The PC version's max resolution is hardcoded to 1600x1200 with only 4:3 aspect ratio, and there's no splitscreen multiplayer. PS2 emulation of it lets you turn up the resolution further and "cheat" in better 16:9 support, though all versions are 30FPS with no way around it.

youre completely wrong though, sega gt was segas semi gran tourismo effort, battle gears play nothing like that at all to the extent im not sure youve even played them. GT2002 might have some non japanese cars but the majority of cars in the game are japanese. They came out in the same era and have similar circuit design even to an extent. You gotta be retarded for real to chimp out this hard over this. And why even bother acting like such an authority when you haven't even played initial d v3? obviously you werent in the arcades back then, figuring out the right shift points for each car and course etc, so how exactly does your opinion that "all sega racers are on rails" possess any merit? The barrels are easily dodgeable. True the rockets are a guaranteed hit and drop to 15mph, but you've had to build up some massive heat by that point, and usually isn't happening until late lap 3 into lap 4. The trick is to get busted near the end of the second to last lap. That way you can spend most of the last lap heat free and re-overtake any AI as they get busted.

They're both hard, RBR punishes you a lot more for fuckups, but the way they handle is completely different. RBR has heavier feeling cars, harder to turn in and harder to get out of a slide, especially with that physics mod everyone uses now. TXRD2 on the other hand is reeeeaally twitchy. The cars snap easily, especially the high HP turbo ones.

F1 Challenge has this big mod pack with every season in it starting from 1950 but it's a bit janky.
It's not retro, but give RFactor 1 with F1 mods a shot too, the physics engine is an evolution of the F1 challenge one, it also has a lot of mods (a bit varied in quality tho) so you can pick whatever season sparks your interest more.

Peach accelerates like a motherfucker, almost twice as fast as mario/luigi, despite having the same top speed, and get's 2 extra km/s of top speed to compared to Toad, which accelerates slightly faster.
Yoshi is like Toad but accelerates faster in the top end.
The heavier characters are faster in a straight line by 2kms/h but accelerate a lot slower.
Peach seems the best one, but I'd try all three to see what you like the most desu.

The point is to teach how to do it right so you disable all assists and play it as close to the metal as the game offers. GT highlights how racing a.i HAS to cheat one way or another otherwise a skilled player will steamroll the a.i if the vehicles are equal. This is especially true in early GT titles where a lot of the challenges allow the player to have a better vehicle and do not tend to give the a.i half a lap headstart. The later titles spice things up with challenges that are unbalanced against the player explicitly to increase difficulty.
