Built for 2D gaming.
It's still not a better system than the Genesis or snes though

I think I like the way the unit and controller look and feel more than actually using it to play games. Sega had some good industrial designers back then.

It's built for hybrid 2D-3D, without knowing much about 3D.

The only truly built for 2D system of that era is the Neo Geo CD, and that's because that is actually an arcade system from when the Genesis launched.

Would have been good if more games made use of the cart slot and the disc at the same time. A rad concept that was underutilized.

It's a fun new console to discover today but its understandable why it was pretty bad for the time.

Ever since I found out this emulates great with Mednafen I've been playing nothing but Saturn games for the past month. This is without a doubt the most underrated console of all time. Sega were phenomenal at making games but completely clueless on the business front. If they brought over all its excellent Jarpigs and SRPGs trapped in Japan then they could have capitalized super fucking hard on the popularity of FFVII and left the N64 in the dust. JRPGs are still pretty popular but 5th gen was definitely when that genre exploded in popularity and was its time to shine. The console and it's games are excellent, it's the suits and advertising that fucked it all up. Sad thinking about what could have been, oh well.

They were clueless making games too, they were just really good.

An example is Virtua Fighter. Great game. Horrible characters. Tecmo had to steal the gameplay to make an actually appealing game in Dead or Alive. SEGA's best effort in Virtua Fighter is a mere Assist Trophy in Smash Bros Ultimate. I rest my case.

Okay so Smash Bros isn't a good example, but Tecmo making "Virtua Fighter but attractive" and making 6 iterations off the power of this alone is example enough I believe.

SEGA were top level kings like Namco and Taito, but they weren't perfect. An alternate universe where SEGA makes all the right decisions doesn't necessarily mean they'll produce a character with staying power like Sonic again. Meanwhile Nintendo does it with every character they design, since that company was stocked with talent from Toei at the moment of their entry into games. Get what I mean by all of this?

PC Engine fans would like a few words with you outside

That being said, the Saturn is still one of my favorite consoles of all time. A few years back I had a bunch of friends over and took turns with 2-player light gun games with two virtua guns. It was a great time.

Saw a Model 1 Saturn with the original controller for sale at this arcade a couple years back. Bought it on a whim knowing the black mark it bears on itself. Glad I made that purchase. It is a pretty fun system. Sadly, that arcade didn't make it due to Covid.

Just use Mednafen. Download the specific BIOS it needs put it in a folder called "firmware" and then drag and drop the .cue file of whatever game you want to play on the Mednafen exe. Then press Shift+Alt+1 to configure your controller. Nothing else needed after that point, just play game.

Look dude, the system had a few 8/10 games, it had some nifty features and it was built pretty well -- but that's it. In every other way, it's a painfully below-average console. The graphics were clearly not up to par, there simply isn't one single Saturn game that can rival yhe best looking PS1 games, let alone late gen N64 games. The library is mediocre with most of the worthwhile games being import-only titles and often falling into a very limited set of genres (e.g. shmups, VNs, etc). The Sega Saturn had no influential titles, it had no graphical showcases, it had no unique abilities outside of meaningless fluff like a music visualizer that literally nobody ever cared about. The PS1 had a massive library of games and the N64 had some of the most revolutionary titles of all time, while the Saturn sat idly by offering little more than sub-par multimedia capabilities and a few semi decent arcade ports that nobody asked for anyway. It wasn't a great console and that's the simple truth. Sorry.

It is one of my most favorite video game consoles. It was a hit at our bi-weekly meetings for so many interesting and weird games, but so many hits too. It was home to a lot of games which cater to my tastes, so it ended out to be the system I have the most physical games owned.
