previous thread >>7738048

This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!

>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

Alright bros maybe a few regulars saw my posts a few threads ago about me possibly getting a new in box fujistu siemens VGA monitor for 5 bucks. I was a lazy fuck so I wanted to wait a bit just to see if I could find something better. I ended up getting a Hyundai Image Quest Q770 in box. Its so fucking good brehs. It's miles ahead of that piece of shit chink tv I used before. It looks flat but its not. Its a curved tube with an anti glare lens in front of it like an arcade. I TATEed it for a bit but I dont know if its TATE safe. Whatever my shmups never looked so clean. Its so bright and clear I had to lower brightness to the minimum. Not an hint of ghosting or flicker the sprites glide across the screen. Going to play some fucking rayforce and blood first time tomorrow.

My camera settings are 1/60 shutter speed, 100 ISO (sometimes 50). I turn off all the lights in the room to prevent glare. Reducing the brightness/picture settings of the monitor might help too. In essence, a darker the better.
Training your hand not to shake to reduce blur is important as well. If you've got a tripod or something, then all the better.

Depends on the resolution of the source material. Though the color depth and clarity you get with RGB (or component) is leaps and bounds ahead of composite. If you ever get the chance, watch something in HD on a CRT that supports 480p or more. The quality is unbelievable. My shitty phone pic doesn't do it justice.

How does that look ? I just quickly unfucked the base settings but its far from dialed in. Being a VGA monitor it naturally has no scanlines so I threw a quick shader on it. This is at about 50 brightness in a well lit room. The shader takes the brightness down quite a bit. At night I have to turn it all the way down to not burn my eyes.
Honestly If you emulate this a pretty painless way to play on CRTs. No line doubler autism needed.

How do I know if I can tate my tv?

>> No.7778191

>>7778160
The bigger it is the riskier it is. You need to open it up and check that:
-The flyback is secured in a safe way so it doesn't weigh on the board
-The boards are secure once vertical
>/!!!\ the tube chassis must provide support in vertical position. If all the tube weight rests on screws in the plastic there's a risk for the tube to crack the frame and fall. The bigger it is the more important this is. Flat screens are generally never to be tated as they're much heavier.
>Tating safely requires a degaussing coil. If your TV doesn't have coils colors can bleed because rotating the mask in the earth's field can magnetize the mask. Don't ever rotate a screen while it's on for the same reason.
Something like a small trinitron is generally safe if you are gentle and don't bang the set but doing this to a big fuckoff WEGA is asking for trouble. Things like arcade sets or PVM are made with this in mind and can be rotated all day long.

what are my saturn bros playing

think i might pick up a japanese n64 for import games

>> No.7779539

>>7779154
FYI the only difference between american and japanese N64s is the plastic in the cartridge slot with notches to only let you insert certain carts. you can replace that piece with one that fits all carts for like $10. so if you have an NTSC console already, you don't need another one, but get one if you only have a PAL console.
also i haven't used my saturn in months but when i turn it on to make sure it's working i usually play vampire savior for a few minutes.

>> No.7779614

>>7779154
What game? I'm considering adding a Saturn to my collection at some point. For the n64 you literally just need to cut 2 bits of plastic off on the inside of the cart slot to be able to play games from any region. You won't even see that piece since it's inside the system so there's no actual cosmetic alteration. My n64 is actually a Japanese one that I got for really cheap. I cleaned it up and restored it, then cut those pieces off and now it's in great condition and plays everything.

I am a massive retard with a retarded question.
Suppose I have a CRT, and I turn it off while having a MiSTer sending it input, specifically with the Spaniard's adapter. Let's also assume that that after I turn it back on, things are mega-distorted, BUT they fix themselves if I turn off the TV long enough.

What does that mean for the TV I have?

Hey, I'm looking to jump into CRT and have the option of an HD or SD trinitron.
I understand that HD doesn't have scanlines and makes anything pre 6th gen look worse than an SD, but to be honest I'd say I play more 6th gen than anything else.
I also think the HD would be neat for hooking a computer up to and playing media.
The SD is a safe bet, and has component, but the HD seems wacky and fun.
If I opt for HD am I making a mistake, or does it make sense for my usecase of mostly 6th gen and media, with the occasional older console?

I'm kinda mixed on 6th gen. For most games I prefer a crt but for many I prefer a modern screen. In my opinion there's not much of a reason to use a HD crt over a modern tv. It really just has a lower resolution and looks fuzzier. I'd say get the SD crt for all gaming needs and if you really want a crt to use with a computer then get a crt monitor. If it's a latching mechanical switch that actually passes current through it and not something that controls a soft power off circuit, then yes, there can be a quite substantial sparking inside the switch that eventually wears the contacts, but same goes for mechanical relays if the standby switching is implemented with such. Some switches can be difficult to find a direct fitting replacement switch as there can be a supplementary momentary switch that is supposed to engage the reset circuit when the button is pressed (this might mainly apply to some 80's European sets). Best bet might be to use an extension cord with a switch if you are worried.

For me, the computer monitor that I posted above is one that I have owned since 2002. I used it as one of my main monitors for a Windows XP machine for about 5 years. I think I paid like $200.00CND back then. It was not an expensive monitor (back then). and only maxed out at 1280x1024 at 60Hz.But can do 1024*768 @ 85Hz, or 800*600 @ 100Hz tops. I used to play so many console games via emulation during the Windows 9x/ XP era, many on this particular VGA CRT. I have it plugged into an I5 with 16GB RAM and a GeForce 660ti. Been using it to play some emulation, as well as some older PC games. The company that manufactured this screen: MAG Innovations still exists.

Every manual I've found so far for the ctc series is either too new and gives the standard method for accessing RCA's service menu which doesn't seem to work on this model, or is too old and is intended for models that don't even have an onscreen display, and therefore no service menu. I have a JVC D series that I got a couple of months back and while the geometry is decent, it's got some weird convergence issues that cause light guns to be inaccurate on the lefthand side of the screen, any solutions for this? The affected area has strange chromatic aberration/discoloring

>> No.7793664

How do you diminish that "zooming" effect you get when the screen goes from bright to dark ? It's a bit nauseating. My monitor has a setting called ABL that seems to affect it but I don't know what it is doing really and I don't know a reliable way to test it.
>>7793634
That looks a magnet burn. I set down my headphones on my monitor and it left a slight discoloration that looked exactly like that. If you have a degauss gun hit the screen and it -may- go away.

oh also, what you're describing is bloom and reducing brightness may help but some monitors just suffer from big changes in geometry thanks to bloom. I actually have the same issue with that JVC I posted, not sure if you can really force it away since it's usually a manufacturing flaw

By definition analog video is imperfect and always has interference and other shit.
The consoles produce digital video at the lowest level. You want digital you just don't know it yet.

In 2035 we'll all be playing in 12K MicroLEDs with Shaders loaded on it and we'll all modify our consoles to output digital 240p over HDMI for the cleanest pure raw signal. Anything desired from the analog domain(such as NES composite) will of course be optionally simulated.

i would really like this giant but it also worries me. i read that this model has a high d board failure rate on reddit and i don't want to break my back carrying it up the steps and then back down again if i have issues and need to toss it out. the guy on facebook marketplace says it works well though, and in youtube videos it seems pretty good.
>Toshiba MW20FP1

i guess i'm going to go with the first one. typing all this out helped me make the decision. after i found out the toshiba tv only has composite inputs it seems pointless.

Worth noting, the Sony is going to scale and add some delay to what you're feeding it; It's nice for 6th and 7th gen (plus media consumption), but it doesn't make 240p content look the nicest, so 5th gen is going to suffer.

So before, there was a part on the left side that would shake a little bit with brighter colors. That has completely gone away. Other than that there weren't any other changes I noticed. I tested all 70-some caps and only 2 of them were just barely reading high esr. The rest of them were in spec. A recap wasn't really needed on this one, but I decided to do it anyway as preventative maintenance since I was working on some mods in it anyway. When I bought the tv, the owner basically said that they only used it while traveling in their rv. So I think it's had relatively little use compared to something like a living room set. It's also the first crt I've actually taken apart and worked on, so more than anything it was a great learning experience.

Yes, if you are using an internal HDD you can literally just raw copy a FreeHDBoot disk image to it and the PS2 will recognise it and boot it. Then you can transfer games with HDL Dump GUI and run them with OpenPS2Loader.
Other methods of softmodding a PS2 include buying a FreeMCBoot memory card or burning a FreeDVDBoot disc.

i recently remembered that i had a ps2 i haven't touched in a while and bought some stuff to mod it this past week. i am following this guide and it'll probably help you out: https://www.psx-place.com/threads/tutorial-the-great-ps2-aio-guide.30219/

the best storage option is an internal hard drive so you would need either a network adapter if you have a fat ps2 or an hdd connection kit that only works with a certain slim model according to the above link. you could also run games off of smb or connect an external hard drive through the usb ports but it's only usb 1.1 so it'll be real slow.

my costs in usd (taxes & shipping included) :
>official network adapter: $13.65
there are unofficial ones but none of them have a working ethernet port. it might be hard to find one at this price by the way, i think they're typically around $20.
>sata adapter: $19.12
the official network adapter only supports ide hard drives.
>500gb hard drive: $30.02
i probably should've gotten a smaller drive to save a few more bucks. ps2 games are only a couple gbs i think.

so i spent $62.79 in all. i haven't modded it yet but i plan on going with the freehdboot method since i'm too cheap to buy a $10 fmcb memory card and i haven't owned a computer with a dvd burner in a while. they all seem easy enough though, so i'll get to it tomorrow night.

speaking of which i don't actually own a crt tv and was wondering if anybody can recommend a cheap component cable and a component to hdmi adapter to use with my modern tv until i find a crt. i keep seeing recommendations to get the oem cable but i am not paying $60 for some wires, damn it.

Ended up buying a scan of the service manual from analogalley. (It was pretty cheap, definitely reccomend them.)
Despite having a lot of user adjustable parameters accessible via the on-screen display, there is no service menu. Everything is adjusted internally. Guess this model was made when RCA was transitioning over from entirely manual adjustment to just having a service menu.
After browsing through everything that can be adjusted it seems that the horizontal size simply isn't adjustable at all. I'll just have to live with a little more horizontal overscan than I would like.
Still going to recap it and mod it to accept RGBs.

They're both RGB. The SCART distributor turns the composite into a sync-only signal.
On the left is an Amiga monitor by Philips from the late 80's. This one only does RGB. One of the nicest 15khz-only monitors you could get for an Amiga back in the day.
On the right is a Matsui-branded flat CRT with a Thomson tube. This supports RGB and composite but the latter only does colors with PAL and that's a 60hz video from an SFC. This was cheap and shitty even when it was new.
Looking at footage from emulators it seems the Philips is pretty much an exact match in terms of colours whereas the Matsui is just plain wrong.

Pretty sure the Matsui can't even be calibrated since the OSD is very very limited and afaik there's no service menu or suitable pots on the inside either.
The Philips on the other hand is good enough for me. Though it is a fully analog device so I could calibrate if necessary.
It doesn't bother me too much. Just figured it was interesting how big the difference was. I noticed it almost immediately in games since greys are almost completely different between the two.

The fact that CRTs have become a "thing" at all is still a bit weird to me. When flatscreens started to hit the market in the early and mid 2000s, literally everyone I knew was stoked to upgrade, and very few seemed to care or even notice the flaws when playing older hardware on it. The worst offense was probably audio, since flatscreens have such garbage built-in speakers, and that's something normies care about even LESS than video quality.

I played far too many blurry, de-saturated games with horrible, tinny audio that I held onto my CRT until the bitter end. I was born in '86, and there was only about a year during 2013-2014 that I didn't have a CRT in my ownership.

How does the distance of the yoke to the back of the crt affect the screen? Does it change the size of what's being displayed? For example if I were to move the yoke slightly further back, would it enlarge the picture? Or does the distance only affect stuff like convergence of the beams?

Digital processing in itself doesn't necessarily mean perceivable lag. For example there are some very early European digital processing sets from mid-80's that in the most basic configuration don't even have a field buffer, much less a full frame. It's just doing the stuff that would be done with a bunch of analog circuits in digital domain.

I know what 576i is, anon.
>The cables matter for picking the resolution, not the device you output to
Yes, that's why the video settings menu is there for in the first place. To choose a mode your display is compatible with. And the PS3 apparently can't output interlaced SD through HDMI (be it 480 or 576).
My point is that because my console is PAL, there is no option to output NTSC resolutions by default, interlaced or progressive, no matter the cable. There is a disadvantage to this, because some games tend to stutter when outputting at 50Hz. That's why I asked if there is a way to make an European console output 480i/p. I'd have to check and see how noticeable it is when playing video though.
The PS3 is surprisingly limited in terms of output resolution options. All you get is your region's SD, the same but progressive, 720p, 1080i and 1080p. I also have a 360, and it supports both SD formats in addition to HD and even a bunch of different computer resolutions. Maybe I'll try using that instead.

The 768p resolutions on the 360 are actually extremely handy at hooking the console up to an HD Ready display because that's usually what the native resolution of the panel is. I was a little disappointed the Xbone didn't support them.

More like a baseline PC monitor that everyone with an e-machine tier PC owned. But with that said, they can still make a nice secondary companion monitor. What do you mean exactly by "pushed to their limit"? If you have a 15khz display and display a 15khz signal through it, no harm is going to be done. Trying to push a higher frequency signal would display incorrectly and will be unwatchable, but is unlikely to harm anything.
I wouldn't advise adding any cooling to a crt. The tube has a heater that keeps it at the correct temperature for normal operation, adding any kind of extra cooling will just fight the heater.
