I get what you're saying, it's true there were magazines and guides and friends sharing tips, but I think this whole "designed to sell guides" idea is a bit overblown by people who have this modern obsession with 100% completion on every game. Probably the most cryptic thing you have to do for progress in Metroid is finding the entrance to Lower Norfair, but that is actually pretty well telegraphed by a screen with way too much of the floor showing compared to the bottom of every other vertical shaft coupled with a clear break in the tile pattern that should strike you as suspicious enough to experiment on. Are there things you'll probably never find on your own? Yeah, plenty, but they're all optional and I think people just have a lower tolerance now for "missing" things in games which really needs to be let go of when playing retro games of this type.

>>7810292

This. Most older games were no designed to be 100% They had a few things that were so hard that only a few people would find them so that the lucky or shrewd would have a special experience. The difficulty was also not tuned so you would find everything.

It's one of the things that made the games mysterious. There was always the possibility that there existed some obscure secret you and your friends never found.

Then perhaps the game should have been designed more with the limitations of its platform in mind. My whole point is that they created these dueling-based encounters where you don't have the tools needed to fluidly engage with it. This is pure autism but yes to everything else. The fun in FF8 is breaking the game and laughing at it trying to have a deep and thought-provoking story. There is one in there somewhere but the way they drop the ball repeatedly goes from funny to sad and back to funny again.

Squall is unironically one of the better written FF protags though.
