>Arcade ports where you die over and over again on the first two levels, short games

Is there a reason the Genesis was so ass backwards compared to the SNES and DOS in the early 90's? Sonic 2 and 3 only had a few levels where as Yoshi's Island 2 had dozens of levels for the player to explore in it. On DOS you had shit really pushing the boundries of what a game could be with stuff like Doom and Star Control 2 and System Shock 1/Ultima where as the Genesis was stuck in the arcade quarter age

>> No.7807820

you are just retarded and haven't explored the library enough, either way arcade games are the only ones that matter, playing jarpig shit and mascot platformers in your 30s is embarrassing

Sega was an arcade machine manufacturer.
They cared more about Daytona USA than they ever cared about Sonic, because addicts in casinos and arcades spend money like retards.
Who gives a shit about some dumbass playing Streets of Rage on console? That's just the brochure. We want you in the arcade playing our arcade games!
>now you know why they don't care about sanic

>> No.7807846

wrong. genesis had king's bounty port which is dos. snes didnt
and it's great port to play on emulators now because you dont need to fiddle with dosbox and it has enough buttons to play on controller

Sega were an arcade developer first and foremost and had a hard time adjusting to the home market's increasing emphasis on exploration over fast paced action.

DOS: Games play like slow shit, literal slideshows
SNES: Games play like slow shit, poor resolution
MegaDrive: Blast processing.

Arcade style games are the only ones that matter. Yoshi's Island is a game literally for toddlers and babies.

You could save your progress in Sonic 3. The game was also too big to fit on one cartridge, so they had to split it in to two games.

The Mega Drive also had great PC ports of Pirates Gold, Star Crusier, Star Flight, The Imortal, Populous etc. Also had the best versions of EA games like Madden, EA Hockey, Mutant League, Road Rash, the Strike series and flight sims like F-22 Intercepter. The majority of Amiga ports were better on the MD, did the SNEZ get a port of Speedball 2?

The only reason S3 and S&K were separate games was because of a McDonald's tie in.

>The thing was, we had planned a big promotional tie-in campaign with McDonald’s the following year in February—and we had spent 2 billion yen (approx 20 million USD) on it!—so we absolutely had to meet that release deadline for Sonic 3 in February. Unfortunately, having to restart everything in June, we only had time to create about half the stages we’d envisioned.
>Then, at the very end of the Sonic 3 development, we were talking about needing to do something, and someone asked if it would be technically possible to combine two cartridges. We figured out the way to do that at the very, very last minute before the deadline, and then we revised all the programming in Sonic 3 to account for a future Lock-On cart.

Genesis had the better run and gun games with stuff like Alien Soldier, Gunstar Heroes, Contra Hard Corps, Mega Turrican, etc. That was one genre Sega had Nintendo beat by a wide margin. It also had Rocket Knight Adventures.

lmao look at Poorfag McGee over here, who was still stuck with a 286 in 1995, meanwhile 486-chads were playing fast and fluid games of Doom 2, online, via DWANGO, whereas the SNES and Genesis needed crutches to play even butchered ports of Doom 1, and only one of them had rudimentary online multiplayer support.

>Contra Hard Corps
Hard Corps is such a good game. Fits the contra series perfectly and only the genesis could handle it.

>> No.7808779

>>7808762
I do feel like the made the NA and EU version excessively hard though, it feels like the game was designed with you being able to take 3 hits per life like in the JP version and thus made the game faster and more intense than other Contra games, when you make it into one hit kills the difficulty goes a bit overboard.

In the end, I think it turned over great for Sega. People had paid full price for half a game, and the cartridge lock-on feature seemed like alien hi-tech, so we didn't mind the ripoff. I remember myself drooling over: "Dude, it's like a game... Then you put another game on top and they turn into something new!" I thought it was peak innovation back then. I wasn't bitter at least, that's for sure.

I only like to play the japanese version. Yeah, sue me! But I have fun with it.

Contra Hard Corps is a prime example, but just one of many which Konami made harder overseas. Sometimes, it was just a minor modification, like "beat this on hard or else there's no ending" (Rocket Knight Adventures, TMNT IV Turtles in Time), other times content was cut on lower difficulty levels (Sparkster/SNES, Contra III - The Alien Wars), or, finally, just making it harder overall (Castlevania: Bloodlines).

From the top of my head, those are the games I remember. If some anon remember more, he could complement my post. Konami admitted that it did this to counter the rental of games, which is permitted here in the occident (in Japan, it isn't). Dunno if it was the right choice. At least with me, if I like the game, I will play it again and again, even after beating it multiple times. Back in the day, I even bought some games I had already finished through rental alone.

>> No.7808845

>>7808835
Yeah I only ever play the JP version too, if I want to make things harder for myself I'll just try to do a no hit run. One hit kills actually made the game significantly less fun despite that usually being the norm in Contra games.

The Mega Drive has what is considered the first Real Time Strategy game
>The same year as Modem Wars, Japanese studio Technosoft's tactical mech shooter Herzog laid the foundation for what many retrospectively label the first real-time strategy game. Herzog Zwei, a kind of proto-MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena, an RTS spinoff genre), followed as a Sega Genesis exclusive in 1989.
https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2017/09/build-gather-brawl-repeat-the-history-of-real-time-strategy-games/

Also, still talking about the genre and PC ports, people should check out the Dune 2 port. It's pretty good.

Sega Genesis was released in 1989. It was competing primarily against the original NES. The super Nintendo didn't release until 2 years later.

Double retard points for thinking Genesis was "stuck" on arcade ports. The arcade industry was still fucking huge at that time. Chasing after arcade quality was still the highest priority for most consoles.

>> No.7811409

it's funny reading these threads because everyone on this board is basically a NERD and omits one of the biggest reasons for the Genesis / Megadrive popularity:
SPORTS
GAMES
esp. the big EA licences, the SNES being basically 8 bit just couldn't handle fast team sports
