My ps2 won't read black ps1 discs anymore. DVD's and silver ps1 discs are fine, but for any black ones it's just stuck on "reading disc". Is there any way to fix this? It's a fat ps2 btw.

The spindle is probably not gripping the disc. As a test, pit some masking tape on the top of the disc (don't cover the hole), and see if it reads. That should add some extra weight and grip for the spindle to keep hold of it.

I dusted off my PS2 slim and it turns out the disc reader is closer than dying to ever, almost none of my games work anymore. I'm getting FreeMcboot on it as soon as possible.

>> No.7806797

So when the drives in our PS2s start going, we can just switch to an HDD+McBoot option, right?

SATA drives still exist and are dirt cheap.
Buy four of these bitches-

and you're good forever. Just use an IDE-SATA adpater for it.

You mean PATA, and you can get either replacement boards that do SATA, or whole prebuilt adapters with SATA.

I got a slim ps2 and it also has a hard time reading DVD discs, it also does a weird scratching noise intermittently at the start when it spins the disc, then it stops making noise. I check my discs to see if there are any scratches on it but I don't see anything. Most of the games I bought still look like new because I've always put them in a nice CD case.
The ps2 runs ps1 games and audio CDs flawlessly and they don't produce that noise.

I'm trying to do random shit I find on youtube to fix it but It's still doing the same thing. Anyone here know how to fix this? I want to try to give it a repair before I give up and try fmb

Could be a potentiometer issue. It was a fairly common issue/fix on the Slims, not sure if they're easily adjustable/fixable on the fat ones.

Hey dude. You need to adjust the potentiometers. It's easy to do but only if you are already familiar with how to use a multimeter. If that's not something you have on hand, feel free to look into getting one.

I didn't bother. I mailed my PS2 to eStarland and they dropped a Chinese laser in and calibrated it there. It's not perfect but close to it and I can read all the supported media types on the PS2 now. Your call.

>> No.7807221

>>7807218
I wanted to mention too that you can't just buy a laser on eBay and drop it in because none of them are calibrated, and you might find some people on YouTube trying to adjust the pots by marking them with a sharpie and adjusting by hand. Don't do this. You'll just end up breaking it.

It’s a common issue for certain disc drives to have issue with certain CD content. Typically CD based ps2 games go first, then PS1 games (they’re all CD)

The issue usually stems from the drive head not being able to keep up with the faster speeds at which CD content needs to spin.

Normally DVD is 3 times faster than CD. So you might expect that to go first, but in the case of games this can actually vary.
CD PS2 content spins the fastest of all PS2 compatible media formats, PS1 content will also spin faster (than normal, not sure if it beats out the stock PS2 DVD game speed, but CDs can also simply just put more strain on the drive than DVDs, explaining why it my stop working first)

if you have the disc speed set higher in the PS2 bios. Try turning this back to normal if it’s on the faster setting. I believe PS1 games at their normal setting should spin about the same speed as an audio CD. Yet it still may be harder on the drive, as it is constantly seeking content as opposed to just streaming audio.

If it can’t read PS1 games on the normal setting, the next step would be messing with tuning pots. But really it’s just a sign that the end is coming. My advice would be to grab another PS2 entirely. There are certain models to look out for which have generally longer lasting drives.

^this is all what I would normally say, however you mention you have problem reading only black PS1 games?? And not the reissued silver discs? (Typically found in the square soft reprints)

I have no idea why that would be the case, there should be 0 difference between black and silver PS1 games, the ink does not affect readability at all, it’s transparent to the laser.

lol just buy a ps1, they're dirt cheap, if you want to use original disks that's the best option

>> No.7810887

I don't remember where I read this info, but legit, try putting tape on the label side of the disk. It's the weirdest fucking fix I've ever ran across, but it mostly works. The heavier the tape, the better, so use strips of duck tape on them. It has something to do with the spinning speed of the discs and I guess putting two square pieces on each side gives just enough weight for it to read. I don't blame you if you don't want to tape your entire ps1 collection though.

>>7810734
He is talking about PS1 games though. OP needs to stop wasting his drive's lifespan on those discs and emulate them. PS2 emulation is still garbage so that machine needs to last for a few more decades at least.

i used to work at a local used game shop. PS2 DVD lasers would go out all the time, but I don't recall ever seeing the CD laser fail.

the way we used to fix dying systems was by adjusting the potentiometers connected to the laser diodes. it's possible to up the voltage that the lasers are getting to get a stronger beam out of them, which often fixes things. unfortunately you MUST know what you are doing, because if you adjust the wrong pot in the wrong direction and by too much you can kill the laser.

i won't try to recall the which pot is for the DVD and which is for the CD laser, but you can almost certainly google it.
