Tons.

iD Software got their start as a ragtag bunch of dudes breaking off of a company called Softdisk, based in Shreveport, Louisiana. Their breakout hit was the sidescrolling platformer Commander Keen, which was a big hit because they had figured out how to make a smooth sidescrolling game like that for PC, previously exclusive to consoles and arcades.
Moving to Madison, Wisconsin, they would focus on making a first person action game, more advanced and way faster than their previous ones (Catacombs 3D, Hovertank 3D), this would be Wolfenstein 3D, the prototypical first person shooter. Though plain compared to most notable games coming after, it's still kinda fun for how past paced it gets, and has a great cartoony charm.

iD Software didn't enjoy Madison, the place they got was shitty, and the winter was miserable to guys who'd mostly have lived in warmer states like Louisiana, California, and Kansas. On the suggestion of Scott Miller of Apogee, their publisher at the time, they moved down to Mesquite, Texas, because it was always warm and there was no state income tax, so iD Software made the move and finished development of Wolfenstein 3D there. With the experience and success of Wolfenstein 3D, they would go on to develop Doom (ditching Apogee as a publisher along the way).

Texas, by the way, and particularly the Dallas area, has been quite significant in the last 30 years of software and hardware development, and games are no exception.

>Wolfenstein 3D
>Shadowcaster
>Rise Of The Triad
>Doom, Doom 2, Doom 3
>Heretic, Heretic 2
>Hexen, Hexen 2
>Duke Nukem 3D
>Quake, Quake 2, Quake 3, Quake 4
>Shadow Warrior
Among these are some of the most significant first person shooter games of the 1990s, developed partially or fully in Texas. Of course there were other studios elsewhere developing the same genre, Valve are situated in Seattle, Washington, and published Half-Life in 1998, one of the most important first person shooters of all time. This also barely scratches the surface of all other kinds of American games.

The West Coast has always had the largest concentration of game developers in the US and Texas is another "island." Microprose were based in Maryland since they were actually a US government front organization which is why they always made military sims.

True, but some of those 'islands' were quite significant, like Texas.

Texans sure like to shoot, must be why they figure so prominently in 90s and 2000's FPS development.

Like others have said, U.S. devs were mainly on the PC side of things back in the retro days.

The best US made Mega Drive (Genesis) game is probably Road Rash 2. The Ecco games, the Shiny games, Klax, Talespin and Bubsy are all worthwhile as well.
