7791280 No.7791280 [Reply] [Original]

Here's a thread focused on the N64, let's talk about the console, its games and any questions you might have regarding it (getting one/emulating it, what games to play, etc..)
Currently playing San Francisco Rush (only 8 tracks left in Circuit Mode) and while the game has ass handling compared to the arcade original and the AI is cheap as fuck, its still a damn addicting, fun racing game.
After beating it I might go for an adventure game, was considering Castlevania 64 or Duck Dodgers 64.

Most boring and forgettable library out of the Big 3 of fifth gen, there's like no games I feel compelled to go back to and play again.

Only reason I would emulate this thing is because I've never played Ocarina of Time and I feel like it's a requirement for (retro) gamers.

Weird, I used to underrate the 64 but gotta say in recent years I really found myself going back to it often. A lot of pickup and play games and the no loading times is also a nice pro.
It also has what is probably my favorite action-platformer of that generation, goemons great adventure.

i feel the exact opposite, I keep going back to N64 games more than PS1 or Saturn's catalog.
I know those two have a bigger library, more genres and even games I've never heard of and that's can be more appealing, but I find myself going through the N64 library more and enjoying my time playing the games I used to play as a kid and also the ones I never managed to play but saw on magazines and TV.
The N64 also has more of my fav genres (platformers, racers and FPS) along some of my all time faves compared to the other two (not saying their libraries are bad btw, I do like 5th gen a lot in general).

I felt that way too for a time, so I'd replay one of the handful of games on the console and get bored in 30 minutes. I'd try another game and the same would happen. Star Fox, F-Zero, Mario 64, OoT, etc. Everything I tried just wasn't fun to replay any more. I guess growing up with those games I had experienced everything I care to about them and know them in and out so they aren't interesting any more.

The N64’s appeal and the fondness people have for it relies pretty heavily on local multiplayer party games. I agree there’s not a whole lot of single player stuff in its library that still appeals to me.

>> No.7791409

The 5th gen filters people who werent around for their release. It's my favorite generation even tho I admit there were problems with early 3d. But no other generation had the mix of wonderful 2d and 3d games. The first party n64 games by nintendo are the pure stuff of my childhood. The playstation had so many amazing games especially rpgs. The saturn is criminally overlooked as well. It has so many great fighting and racing games. I hear there are great saturn rpg games that only came out in japan. Anyway if I could only play one generation of games its this one.

It’s funny because I was 12 in 1998 when OoT came out and thus the perfect age for it and yet I just never got into the N64. On the other hand I love the GameCube and Wind Waker is by far my favorite 3D Zelda.

I bought one of these 3rd party controllers for dirt cheap and it works well but some games I have don't recognize it being connected and they give me the no controller message (mischief makers and star wars racer to give some examples).

That VI-deblur looks amazing and makes some 2D elements look great to my tastes. The HW2 mod can output both HDMI and analog RGB/YPbPr which could help with streaming and video capture.

>>7796436
I like it because it combines the best elements of Wrestlemania 2000 and No Mercy plus has its own elements. VPW2 has the running grapples that No Mercy gained which was not in Wrestlemania 2000, which means there is more of a guessing game against a running opponent for counters. However, No Mercy restricted moves, no longer allowing strong/heavy but counterable attacks on light grapples which Wrestlemania 2000 allowed giving full freedom in creating and editing characters. Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 has the greater customizing and longer intros of WM2k, plus the technical enhancements in No Mercy, but also has things neither games has like chain grapples, cage fighting, strike sequences, etc.

I’ve really come around on the N64 recently and I can’t believe I used to think PS1 games looked vastly superior. I couldn’t get past the blur or the fog the console is known for. If you look at everything else aside from those two specific things you’re left with much better looking games than the PS1 that managed to do perspective correct 3D with antialiasing, texture filtering, and next to no warping. And even then, the blur does its antialiasing job and the fog hides pop-in, so even its visual flaws have good purpose. It’s genuinely really impressive for its time and I wish more people could appreciate it, but I get why they don’t. Like I said I didn’t really get it for a long time, and this is a console I grew up with. The texture filtering in particular is an acquired taste I guess, I really used to hate the way it looked compared to the grainy PS1 which offered a far less processed, clearer image that I believed offered more detail. Now I realize a lot of that detail actually came from the blockiness and graininess of the textures and isn’t really an objectively better or worse look than what the 64 offers with its textures. It’s a look that absolutely works for the PS1 but the N64 offers something else completely. I’m glad I can appreciate it now though, it has a lot to offer.

Also curious what you mean. Mischief Makers is a fun, varied 2D action game.
Shadows of the Empire is a fun action game with platforming but there’s 3 or 4 more genres in there as well, in that regard it reminds me of more modern games.
Conker’s Bad Fur Day is a great action platformer that ends up being a lot more than your typical Mario 64 or Banjo collectathon. Another good genre mashup, but I guess there are adventure elements in there as well.
Kirby 64 is a fairly solid Kirby game but ultimately nothing special IMO. Good if it’s what you’re into.
The Goemon 64 games are worth your time but I’m not sure if they’re what you’re after. The first one is a little like a simplified Zelda game. The second is a really good 2.5d platformer.

Possibly. DK64 is somewhat of it's own beast compared to anything else on the N64. I'd like to call it Banjo-Kazooie 1.5, considering it shares a lot of similar themes and aesthetics. It has the large amount of collectibles like Banjo-Kazooie but the large worlds that Tooie has. It fucks me up how N64 has a fuckton of racing and first person shooter games but little to no RPGs. Besides the obvious with the Square falling out, why was that? Did Yamauchi have a say in not allowing certain types of RPGs to get made? Was it because it didnt explore 3D enough the way a shooter or racer did? I thought the Shining Force games on Saturn showed you could still make wonderful 3D animations for an RPG. I mean fuck, they even deliberately made the only Nintendo RPG a Mario game with 2D sprites instead of 3D models (Paper Mario). Zoomers may praise that game to heave , and it is indeed good, but a lot of people thought it looked lame back in the day. I personally wanted a 3D followup to SMRPG, but thats all in the past now.

To be fair I should have said the controller pak. But its a memory card so I often call it the memory pak, which can be confusing since the expansion pak adds more memory.

I thankfully got an official expansion pack for $34 just last week on ebay. I'm thinking of buying a second one just as a backup. Now just need to getan x7 Everdrive and I would like to wait for it to go on sale.

How much did they charge for it?

Same. I had to do it twice and nailed it the second time. It's not that bad, it's another cope for filtered SOTN losers

was fun while it lasted, would make another one but i think there's enough N64 threads on /vr/ right now

Why is it even on autosage?

>> No.7840647

for whatever reason, /vr/ threads can only last a few weeks before they get autosage'd.

I decided to get an ED64 instead of an everdrive

Did I make a mistake?

This, easy to set up, huge library of underappreciated games, the carts dont take up much space, none of the games will leave you poor just to get one, really a party system best enjoyed with friends, and great third party controllers.

a few games don't work on ed64 but otherwise it works alright.

You paid a normal price for a product that shouldnt cost what it does when bought from Krikzz, so you made a good choice
