I'm too used to the one hit deaths of the US version so going to JPN version would make things too easy for me.
I guess I could offset it by playing as Fang as he's a more demanding play style compared to Browny.

Everyone says this is wayyy hard but I gave the US version a go anyway and it wasn't that bad. Yes it's challenging, but if you're creative and experiment with different weapons and approaches it's very beatable. I found it easier than a lot of shmups I've played.

I didn't have that luxury as a child, so I just grew up with the US version and learned from that. Nowadays for people new to these games I guess I'd recommend the JPN version if they need the extra help, but really you shouldn't be playing Hard Corps as a first timer anyway, the NES Contra is the perfect entry point for newbies.

I like both, but since you asked for it, Metal Slug is not as challenging, Hard Corps lets you store up to 5 different weapons at once, characters actually have different playstyles and weapon differences, unlike Metal Slug you can shoot in any direction with (almost) any weapon, you have a slide that doesn't suck. Also, you can choose across multiple paths that will lead you to multiple final bosses and endings. Metal Slug has limited ammo, and its more about carefully planning how to use what you have at hand to defeat enemies effectively, Contra games are more frenetic and faster, is all about high risk high reward. Both are great. I know that some Metal Slug games implement some of these features, but IMO those "new" features don't work as well as they work on Hard Corps.
